1 St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Celebrating our 46th Snowmobiling Season! Volume Number 6 January 2016 President s Message Ozzie Ausloos Dance like no one is watching As of this writing the little snow we did have is all but gone. At our last membership meeting, which was our Christmas Party, I had asked the member attendees to start a snow dance. Well, it s not working so we have to ask our entire membership to start dancing like no one is watching. Remember going to weddings and by the end of the night your legs were dog tired because of all the dancing. This is the effort I want you to put forward asking for cold and snow. We need all the help we can get. We do have several positive things to inform you about... Oneida and Vilas Counties have given their approval to open the trail, weather permitting. Our new bridge over Dog Creek is in and set in place. This bridge is going to make heading west on 70B much easier and it eliminates the crossing of this creek on Hwy J. This crossing was always difficult due to the lack of snow on the bridge. A second plus to this bridge area is, it is very close to Dog Lake and it will be a photo opportunity and a nice place to stop for a break. The revised route just west of town through the land that the town bought is complete and is now a multi-use area. Our trail will cross trails used by cross country skiers, snow shoe enthusiasts, and fat tire bike riders. These crossing are marked with yellow caution signs so please ride with awareness. Our club will be working at 3 events in January and will be looking for volunteers to help. Please look in this newsletter for more information on the Radar Run and the Groomer Show. We will also be helping at the Tundra Plunge, a benefit for Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation. Volunteering at these events is a great way to help our club and meet new people at the same time. 2 St. Germain Chamber shows their support of snowmobiling to our community! A check was presented to the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club from the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce for $6,000 at their annual Christmas Party at the Whitetail Inn. Pictured from left to right: Penny Wiesmann, Chamber Director, Ozzie Ausloos, Bo-Boen President, Julaine Nampel and Tom Christensen, Chamber Board of Directors. Secretary s Report I would like to say a big thank you to Jeff, Joy and the staff of Whitetail Inn for the great evening at our Christmas party on December 8 th. The dinner was superb and the apples flambé over ice cream was the perfect end to a perfect evening. Thanks again for all your effort in making it a wonderful evening. Another thank you has to go to the 90 members who attended for their generosity. Because of you, we were able to donate 9 boxes of non-perishable food and other products and $135 to the Vilas Food Pantry. I had the opportunity to go inside while food was being distributed and it looked as if many of the shelves were pretty empty. Hopefully with our donation they will be able to restock some of those shelves. As of right now, the snow situation is bleak. The recent 40 o temperatures and rain have really taken their toll on the little bit of snow that we did have on the ground. Opening of the trails has been delayed from the original date of Dec. 14 th. With all of the members that the club now has, I think if everyone would snow dance once a day we could get something going on here. The trails are all inspected and ready to go now all we need is the snow gods to cooperate. Keep a blizzard in your thoughts. 4 Trail Boss Jim Wendt As I watch it rain on the totally brown ground in the middle of December, it is time to focus on the great people who support our program. We have one thing to report before I recognize our supporters: the new Dog Creek bridge on the high line is in and complete! It is a great improvement to our system for those east west travelers through St. Germain. There are so many folks who have stepped up to help our club provide world class trails and I want to give some credit where credit is due. Whenever we have needed tools or equipment for trail projects, Paul Bohnen at Paul s Rental All has provided everything at NO charge to the club. That's thousands of dollars of equipment lent to us whenever we need it...wow! Steve Vogel has donated machine time for various trail projects at no charge to the club! Taking time away from profitable jobs to address club needs is really a commitment to our program. Jim Kelsey at Woodland Auto Clinic has provided repair service and parts for our equipment always at free or discounted rates. Keeping our equipment running is a huge job and I know I can count on Jim when I need something repaired fast! Dave Walker at Arrowhead Groomers continues to step up providing his welding and fabricating skills whenever we need. Use of his loader at a moments notice is commonplace. Everything Dave does is at little or no cost to the club I know I can count on Dave for help! I would also like to thank Tim Ebert and Mike Van Meter for their help when called upon for their assistance. There are many suppliers that also provide parts and services to our club that go out of their way for prompt delivery to keep us on the trails with little or no down time. CarQuest Auto Parts of Woodruff for engine parts, Lulich Implement in Mason, WI for our tractor parts, Track Inc. for our Tucker parts and Brett Gibson, Service Manager for his knowledge and support whenever we need it, Hicks Oil for our fuel and lubrication needs, Kent & Terry Knitt at Knitt s Hardware Hank for saw and tool repairs for no cost, and the Weber family at Camp s Sentry Foods for discounted supplies for our fundraising events. To all of you, I offer a sincere THANK YOU for your commitment to our club and to making my job a lot easier! I hope I have not forgotten anyone on my list but if I have, I offer my sincere apology! I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our two County Snowmobile Coordinators, Eric Rady from Oneida County and Dale Mayo from Vilas County. I work closely with these men to handle land use issues, trail concerns, safety issues, and required paperwork submissions. These two men are tireless and committed to the success of our program and I consider them partners of the club as well as personal friends! Consider the three Oneida County bridge projects alone that Eric has worked on for the club. These three projects cost nearly a million dollars, all were completed on time, and Eric's project coordination were invaluable to the success of these trail enhancements. I look forward to continuing our great working relationship as we keep the Bo- Boen s at the top of the snowmobile clubs in the state. Finally, I would like to thank all our members, directors, driver staff, and loyal assistants for your help and support. Our people make this club the best, without you, we would not be the model that other clubs look at and respect. Have a great holiday season and hopefully the weather will change and get us into the season we all look forward to with a passion! Happy Trails, JIM Snowmobile Safety Education Class December 29 & 30, 2015 Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile, and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand. Snowmobile Safety Education Classes are offered in the fall and early winter, and should start appearing on the DNR s web site within the next month or so. All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from St. Germain Sport Marine during business hours or by calling between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to and click on the Contact US tab located at the top. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club s Snowmobile Safety Education Class will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 29 & 30, Anyone 11-1/2 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education certificate; however, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. Pre-registration is required by calling Peggy Ausloos at (715) If you can donate a couple of hours of your time to help with registration, cookies or bars, grading of tests or helping outside with the machine test, please call Peggy Ausloos at (715) Again this year Judy & Chuck Berard will be making lunch for the kids and are requesting helpers from 11:30 to 12:15. If you could lend them a hand please call them at (715) The Air, The Forest and The Watch Print Raffle Again this year, Don & Marie Bauman donated another signed, numbered and framed print to the club to be used for a raffle. This years print is The Air, The Forest and The Watch by Robert Bateman. It is 23 x 34.5 and tickets are available anytime at St. Germain Sport Marine or at Club Dinner Meetings. For those of you out of the area, you may also send money with your membership renewal and make a note what the additional funds are for. Tickets are 3/ $5.00 or 7/$10.00.

5 Membership News Margie Klingsporn Not sure when we will actually have snow to ride on; however, we have 845 members anxious for the white stuff to descend upon our northwoods. If you could have told me 4 years ago that I would be registering this many memberships, I would have quit before I began. When I received the database, there were 455 memberships. Now there are almost 400 more that and 37½ % are new. We are an awesome group! If any of you have questions about your membership, please feel free to direct them to me at mklings@frontier.com or Have a blessed holiday season and a happy new year with your family and friends. Please drive and ride safely. Membership Count New Renewed Total A big thank you goes out to those of you who sent in a trail or equipment fund donations with your membership applications. 9 This little Brown Sign Could Save Your Life! Our Bo-BBB s are makings TRACKS! Vilas and Oneida County Snowmobile Clubs have placed brown, 3 digit number signs throughout the County at key intersections. In the event of an emergency, the 911 operator will ask for this number. Their emergency response system can identify these numbers and give important information to rescue personnel. So pay attention to these intersection Number signs. They can save lives! Cover picture courtesy of Dean S. Achenson: The Bo-BBB s are a group of women who snowmobile together every Wednesday during the season leaving from the Bo-Boen groomer barn in St. Germain at 9 am sharp. They are pictured here going through Boulder Junction. The group will have an "overnighter in February.
