6 P a ge 6 T h e Clover Patch June 2015 Want to be featured in our monthly Meet an Oneida County 4-Her section? Contact the 4-H Office today! June kicks off the 4-H dog project with Carol Lofquist, owner of TLC dog training and certified 4-H leader. Her professional experience pays off for those youth in 3rd grade and up who spend Sunday mornings from now until the snow flies learning about dog obedience Carol Lofquist through the sport of dog agility. The training course is located at the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport and anyone can stop by to observe the practice sessions. Youth can always join the 4-H dog project by calling the UW- Extension office. There are many reasons why it would be important to learn dog obedience or agility, according to Lofquist. It teaches kids respect, consistency and responsibility. They learn how to kennel, feed, water and leash a dog. They learn to teach their dogs manners to be better behaved. Preventing animal abuse and reducing the number of dogs in shelters is why I spend nearly every Sunday of my summer volunteering her time to teach youth how to positively communicate with their dog. I want people to be educated. We have to teach youth. They are our future. That s why I do it. While teaching dog obedience and agility are key elements of the learning sessions, Lofquist said the main goal is to have fun. We support each other, she said. We look at positives, not the negatives. Everyone does a good job and you grow from there. As you learn the skills in agility and understand the equipment, then you can start setting courses yourself and even play games. Lofquist s training style is unique in that youth work not only their own dog, but with other dogs, too. Carol (far left) attends a local 4-H dog agility competition. Learning about other dog breeds and behaviors plays an important role in educating the youth. It s a way to help educate youth about what works well and what doesn t, what kind of behavior they like and don t like, and what kind of a dog they may want in the future, Lofquist added. Over the years that Carol has been the dog project leader, she has expanded on her 4-H role by guiding youth in leading agility demonstrations at the Oneida County Fair, taking on the leadership role of facilitating the Keep it in the Northwoods 4-H Community Club, leading the Oneida County 4-H Leaders Association as President, and coordinating a major community service project for the American Cancer Society: Bark for Life. Her dedication to positive youth growth and learning is a definite Oneida County asset. A 4-Her trains her dog at the Oneida County 4-H dog agility arena, located at the Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport.

T h e Clover Patch June 2015 P a ge 7 Sharing one piece at a time 4-Hers make puzzles, share them with care center residents As told by Carol Lofquist, Keep it in the Northwoods 4-H Club Leader A group of youth and adults from the Keep it in the Northwoods 4-H Club shared handmade puzzles they with residents of Rennes Health & Rehab Center in Rhinelander. Carol Lofquist, club leader, shares their experience: They wanted to interact with the youth and get to know them. It was so powerful. We went over on a Sunday morning. We created puzzles and we wanted to share them with the elderly. The kids had You could just feel it. come up with questions to ask them. It was really cool to - Carol Lofquist, 4-H Leader watch. It s hard to describe. Some of the elderly, once we got the puzzles out, were shy, but then everyone was starting to communicate. What did you do when you were younger? What is your favorite color or favorite dog? It was really cool how the kids made the effort to make the conversation work if older person was shy. And it was really cool to see the elderly person help the youth when they were shy. By the time the half-hour or so was done, everyone was talking. The youth learned from the older people what they went through in life and the older people got to see what the future of our youth was like. These residents came voluntarily to do this. They were not forced to do it. They wanted to interact with the youth and get to know them. It was so powerful. You could just feel it. By the time we were done, they wanted us to come back.
