1 President s Message Tom Nampel St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Celebrating Snowmobiling Since 1969! Volume Number 4 December 2017 I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Well, we have some snow on the ground and ice on some of the lakes. Let s hope it stays cold enough to stiffen up the trails and freeze the lakes. Then, we can pray for a lot of snow to make the season a great one. We are due for one. We have many fundraisers set up throughout the year. Please check the newsletters for the dates. Some of them will require a lot of volunteers. If you have not volunteered before, try it. You will meet a lot of nice people and have fun doing it. Also, we have a Snowmobile Safety Course scheduled for December 27 and 28. You don t have to be a kid to take the course. If you are new to the sport, this is a great way to learn the do s and don ts of snowmobiling. Let s make this season the Best and Safest one yet! Tom Nampel from your Bo-Boen Officers, Board of Directors and Support Staff Be sure the lake is marked before you ride across it!!! The Future of Snowmobiling in Wisconsin Depends on You ~ Ride Responsibly Please obey posted speed limit signs on all town roads. Speed limits will be strictly enforced. The use of roads is a privilege that may be taken from us if we do not use them carefully. A Note From Our Newsletter Editor, Pam Gebhardt I ve Been HACKED! If you receive an from Tim and I, and it s an invoice asking for money, it s spam and we ve been hacked. We apologize for the confusion this has caused. Newsletters in the future are going to be sent from Membership chairs, Jeff & Beth Urbans from the following address: boboenmembership@gmail.com As always, newsletters can be viewed on our website at Snowmobile Safety Education Class December 27 & 28 Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile, and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand. Snowmobile Safety Education Classes are offered in the fall and early winter, and should start appearing on the DNR s web site within the next month or so. All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from St. Germain Sport Marine during business hours or by calling between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to and click on the Contact US tab located at the top. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club s Snowmobile Safety Education Class will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, December 27 & 28, 2017 in the Community United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. Anyone 11-1/2 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education certificate; however, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. Preregistration is required by calling Peggy Ausloos at (715)
2 The Legend of Dennis Sorensen It snowed in the Northwoods yesterday. Mother Nature created the snow spectacular allowing for a glorious send-off for one of snowmobiling s most dedicated sons. Dennis Sorensen, 79, passed away this day and rode his last snowfall as he left this world. It never took long for anyone who met Sorensen for the first time to realize he was passionate about the sport of snowmobiling. Raised on a farm in southern Wisconsin, his nononsense, hard work ethic propelled him to make the snowmobile program in Wisconsin the best in the country. He was the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC) Walworth County Director for two decades, AWSC Vice President and finally AWSC President in 1994 and After his move to St. Germain, he picked up the gauntlet and became active in the Bo- Boens and the Vilas County snowmobile organization. He also served on the Governors Snowmobile Recreation Council, the Governor-appointed body that forms policies and distributes funds from the snowmobile program s budgets. It was not simply lip-service, this passion for snowmobiling. In the early 1980s and the development of the snowmobile organizations, he led the Walworth County Snowmobile Alliance to create their snowmobile grooming program. He was one of three people to put his home up as collateral so the county snowmobile organization could purchase its first groomer. Dennis Sorensen on the Governor's Ride with Governor Scott McCallum He worked night and day with other snowmobiling pioneers to help build a rock solid, grassroots organization. Snowmobiling went from a renegade sport to an organization that was respected by local and state elected officials. Sorensen was a no non-sense guy. He had no time for tree huggers or anyone who wanted to take a free ride on the success of snowmobiling. His direct approach in dealing with obstacles gave him an appearance of a curmudgeon. However, those who possessed snowmobile leadership influence knew that Sorensen was in full command of the facts and figures of Wisconsin snowmobiling and he knew how to get things accomplished. He was proud that Wisconsin s snowmobile program was self-funded and was not paid for by taxpayer money. He was equally proud of the thousands of snowmobile volunteers who are the backbone of the snowmobile trail system. And he was most proud of his family. Wife, Peggy, who he called the Swede, and he, had two children, Kristin and Scott. Peggy was very involved in snowmobiling as well and ran the Miss Snowflake pageant for many years. Both Dennis and Peggy were avid Polaris snowmobile riders and their move to St. Germain gave them the opportunity to ride unlimitedly on the hundreds of miles of trails connected throughout the area and state. Peggy passed away in January 2015, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. The Prom Queen was Dennis true love and after her death, he moved to Woodruff. This man truly was an icon and he will be missed, not only by family and friends, but by every snowmobiler who will ride the trails he helped to create, and that is his legacy. Written and published with permission by: Dierdre Strass, Eliason Realty of the North Seasons Eatings It s that time of year again. A time to open our hearts to those less fortunate than us. Once again, at our annual Christmas party at Whitetail Inn, we will be collecting non-perishable food and personal care items for the Vilas Food Pantry. Items that are needed most are cereals, granola bars, canned meat, boxed dinners, peanut butter and toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Of course, money is always appreciated. The food pantry works with local grocers to get vouchers for meat and fresh fruit and vegetables. Thank you in advance for your generosity! CLUB TAX RETURNS THANK YOU BOYD BEST Each year our club is required to file a tax return. My role as treasurer began in 1991 and shortly thereafter Boyd Best at Idle Hours Resort graciously agreed to get our tax forms together and has continued for now over 25 years. At this time I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to Boyd for his professional services for all those years without compensation. Along with his service, Boyd and his beloved wife Judy constantly supported the club with financial support. Boyd is now retiring from his profession so we are looking for someone to take over this duty starting with our fiscal year ending March If you are interested and able to help give me a call at Again, on behalf of the club members, past and present board THANK YOU BOYD! Ed Siergiej, Treasurer

Keep in mind that on December 12 th we will have our Christmas party dinner. This year, Don and Harriet Schulpius will be the guests of honor. Don was the first president of the Bo-Boens when the club started back in He has some great stories to tell about those first years and rides. The dinner will be held at Whitetail look for the menu in this newsletter. Our November dinner was held at Fibber s. With 69 people in attendance, we had a great meal from Kaye and Rob. Thanks to them for another great evening. Kay Schultz Volunteering is a great way to meet club members Meeting people can be a hard thing to do for some people. If you are reading this and coming to our December Christmas Party Dinner Meeting, write your name and Merry Christmas on a piece of paper, give it to Ed at the dinner party for a chance at a secret Santa prize. What better way than to volunteer for some of our fund raisers. We have two of our biggest events coming up in February. On February 2 nd and 3 rd we will again serving food at the Radar Run and handling parking and crowd control. We will need about 20 volunteers each day. The shifts are normally 3 to 4 hours and are a great way to meet other club members. The food service tent is heated. 4 Loren Anderson It is with great sadness that we announce that Loren Anderson, our co founder and past president, has passed away. During the summer he was battling some health issues but recently was doing better. Unexpectedly he passed away Sunday, October 29th in his sleep. Loren was instrumental in the Snowmobile Hall of Fame and what it is today. As we approach celebrating our 35 th year we can thank Loren for his dedication to the SHOF itself along with the snowmobiling sport. His tireless passion for our sport was contagious. Many people who stopped by to visit the SHOF enjoyed many stories throughout the years. There will be a service at the St. Germain Evangelical Free Church on Saturday, November 4, with a reception at his shop following. The shop is located behind the Snowmobile Hall of Fame. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Germain Evangelical Free Church and the Snowmobile Hall of Fame. Trail Boss Jim Wendt Only one month to go...plans are coming together! First, I would like to thank the 42 club members who came out to brush our trails last month! WOW, that was the largest turnouts we have ever had for the event. Weather co-operated and we all enjoyed being out in the woods to perform this very essential task. We enjoyed a great pizza dinner and refreshments at the Twilight Bar & Grill that evening to cap off the day. A HUGE THANK YOU to Tara Pulec at Twilight Bar & Grill for her donation and Joe & Debbie Reid at Spang s for the pizzas. Tara, Joe & Debbie are such gracious supporters of our club and never hesitate to step up with donations at our events! I look forward to seeing you all next season. We have our driver meeting coming up soon as we set our personnel and schedules for this season. We should be taking delivery of our new tractor shortly...always an exciting time for the club. All should be ready to begin getting our system in shape by the time we officially open in mid December. I will be welcoming four new drivers to our staff this season. We have had four men retire after serving the club for more than 50 years!!!! Mike Osborne, Tom Marks, John Vojta, and Mike McCormick will be missed greatly and deserve our sincere thanks for a job well done. These men have become my close friends and men I could always count on to do exemplary trail work for the club! Our new drivers have some huge shoes to fill! Don t forget to get those trail passes on your sleds before you ride. The DNR has increased the fine for riding without the pass to $ that is a high price to pay for missing your responsibility. Let s hope for cold temps before snows on the trail and maybe we can get the swamps frozen and ride able before Christmas. Shine them up...it s almost here!!!!!
