In a time of great turmoil (the Reformation), St. Robert systematized Church teachings against the attacks of the Reformers. His greatest work, Disputations on the Controversies, set forth Christian doctrine in a clear and compelling way. A life-long scholar of the Scriptures and the early Fathers of the Church, his writings helped explain not only the content of our faith, but that Jesus as a living person is the source of revelation. Our faith is not merely a set of doctrines, but the person of Christ living in the Church today. He wrote two important catechisms on the faith. He was appointed the personal theologian to Pope Clement VIII who elevated him to the office of Cardinal based on his great learning. St. Robert Bellarmine remained a Jesuit priest at heart, living a life of austerity and generosity to the poor. He died on September 17, 1621, was canonized in 1930 and was named Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1931. (Adapted from Saint of the Day, edited by Leonard Foley, O.F.M.). Because our parish was founded in 1930 it was decided to dedicate our parish to this newly canonized saint. In the development of religious education St. Robert was the first person to recognize that children are different from adults. He said that if we are going to teach our children we have to teach them as children, not simply as little adults. He believed in "age appropriate" learning, a model we take for granted today but was revolutionary in his time. The reading from the Book of Wisdom describes the importance and priority of our personal relationship to the Spirit of Wisdom. The writer says, I prayed...i pleaded and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, And deemed riches nothing in comparison with her He goes on to say that God is the guide of Wisdom and the director of the wise. St. Paul reminds the Corinthians that they have received the Spirit of God, not that of the world. He says the natural person, the one caught up only in him/herself and the life of this world, does not accept what is taught by the Spirit. Paul says that it is only the spiritual person, the one putting on the mind of Christ, who is able to discern and act wisely. The gospel of Matthew today begins with Jesus telling his disciples, None of those who cry out, Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of my Father in Heaven. Only the one who hears and follows his words is wise. Jesus then tells the well known parable of the wise man building on rock and the foolish man building on sand. Today we are instructed that we must build our lives upon the Word of God. When we do, the Wisdom (Spirit) of the Lord will come to us and lead us to the Kingdom of God. Wisdom 7:7-10, 15-16 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 Matthew 7:21, 24-29

Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of our patron, St. Robert Bellarmine. His gift to us is his love for Scriptures and for the Church. His teachings remind us that the person of Jesus Christ is the source of our faith and of the revelation of God. The doctrines of the faith are revealed truths that lead us to the Truth, Jesus himself. St. Robert saw the Church both as the institution that nurtured the faith of the apostles and as the manifestation of the living Christ. The scripture readings for the Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine call us to seek the Wisdom of God for our lives. The author promises those who value God s ways will receive the Spirit of Wisdom (God himself) a gift worth far more than the riches of the world. As we remember St. Robert, let us imitate his search for wisdom and holiness in our own lives. We also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the new church. It is a good time to reflect on the meaning of parish and what it means to be a community of faith. The church is not simply a place but the focal point of our spiritual lives. Catholics often speak of going to church or mass. It is actually more fitting to speak of gathering with the church. The difference is not one of semantics, but a whole different way of viewing the world. When church is a place we go to, it can become simply one more thing we do, another activity in our busy lives. But when church is the community with which we gather to be with the Lord, then church becomes what God means it to be, the center of our lives where we are nourished together, and where we share the blessings of faith, community and sacrament. It is not simply what we do but who we are. Mass is family time. Just as the Sabbath is a gift from God as a day of rest and time to share with our families, so, too, the celebration of the mass is a gift from God. This is also family time. We gather as God s family to rest in the Lord and to share in the celebration of all God s gifts. Through our presence at Church, the whole community is a gift to one another. Being together allows us to live in, and share, the blessings of being God s people. Together we become the living body of Christ. By realizing that we don t just "go" to church, but we gather "with" the church, we understand that through this celebration we are nourished and sustained, and able to move back into our busy lives and bring God s message of love to the world around us. Today we also celebrate Catechetical Sunday. There will be a special blessing at the 10 a.m. mass for the Catechists and Volunteers in our Religious Education programs. There is no greater mission in the Church than to share our faith and pass it on to the next generation. St. Robert Bellarmine is the patron saint of catechists so it is very fitting that these two celebrations come together at the same time every year. Coffee and Donuts will be served after all the Sunday masses. Our Sacramental Preparation programs are underway. RE classes began this weekend. This coming Wednesday we will hold the Parent Meeting for the children preparing to receive Confirmation. The following Tuesday, September 22nd, we will hold The Parent Meeting for the children preparing to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion for the first time. Please keep all these children and their families in your prayers. The Sports Association will meet this Monday, September 14th, at 7:30. We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the school sports programs. Pleased see page nine for more information about how you can help. The Liturgy Board will meet this Tuesday at 7 p.m. We are always looking for new members. If interested in helping plan the liturgical seasons of the year, please call Deacon Bill at the rectory. The Parish Pastoral Council will hold its first meeting of the new year this Thursday at 7 p.m. The first part of each meeting is open to all parishioners. If anyone has a concern or a suggestion feel free to call me at the rectory to put an item on the agenda. We will celebrate an All-School Mass this Friday at 1:30 p.m. in honor of St. Robert Bellarmine (his actual Feast Day is September 17th, the anniversary of his death in 1621). All are welcome. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
