They have been chosen from all the nations and rescued during times of trouble. Moses tells the people to fix in their hearts that the Lord is God and that there is no other. He tells them that they must obey God s statutes and commandments so that they, and their children after them, may prosper. In his letter to the Romans St. Paul describes those who are led by the Spirit as children of God. As heirs with Christ, we must suffer with him before we can be glorified with him. Today s Gospel reading comes from the end of Matthew as Jesus prepares to ascend to heaven. He gives his disciples the Great Commission to Go, and make disciples of all nations. He commands them to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Although the reality of the Triune God is not elaborated on further by Jesus, it is clearly spoken of by him. We are comforted by our Lord s final words: I am with you always, until the end of the age. Deuteronomy 4: 32-34, Romans 8: Matthew 28: FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Today, May 31st, we would normally celebrate the Visitation of the Blessed Mother to her cousin Elizabeth. Because the feast falls on a Sunday this year, it is not celebrated as a feast day. However, it is an important moment in the life of Jesus, Mary and the Church. In the first reading the prophet Zephaniah tells Zion to shout for joy and exult because God has given them a mighty savior. In Luke s gospel we hear the story of the Visitation. Mary goes to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is carrying John the Baptist in her womb. Elizabeth recognizes her as the mother of her Lord because the baby has stirred in her womb, leaping for joy when he sensed that the Messiah was present in Mary s womb. Mary then proclaims her Magnificat which we have echoed in prayer throughout the centuries. The significance of this celebration is to remind us that God is faithful to his promise and has given us a Savior who shows us God s love, mercy and fidelity. We are called to respond, rejoicing in God s love and loving one another. Zephaniah 3:14-18a Luke 1:39-56

3 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the unfathomable mystery of God s own divine nature. St. John tells us that God is love. Not merely that God loves us or shows us how to love or invites us to share that love. These all derive from the fact that God IS love. The essence of love is that it is shared. God is not some lonely divinity far away in the distant heavens. God is relational. God reveals to us the relational nature of love in the mystery of the Trinity. The Father is the lover, the Son is the beloved and the Holy Spirit is the bond of that love. Yet all three are one in the essence of divine love. This inner relational nature is dynamic and vibrant. In the selfhood of God this pure energy, this force of love, is beyond our imagining. Like a powerful river that continually overflows its banks, the love that is God cannot be limited within itself. St. Thomas Aquinas says that this love is diffusive of itself. The inner love among the Trinity cannot by its very nature be self-contained. Out of God s inner self, creation happened. Out of this relationship, life happens. God chose to reveal His love to us through the Holy Spirit. We see this in the beauty of our world and in the order of the universe. In the revelation of Jesus as the Christ we see the divine nature become one with our humanity. In the beginning the Spirit moved on the waters and the world was created. God said let us make man in our own image and likeness. And so male and female he created them. God breathed his life-giving Spirit into our very being. And in the fullness of time he took on our image and likeness and was born of the Virgin Mary so that we could see the face of God. This means that Christ became human so that we could become divine. We are created to partake in the life of God. Go, therefore, and baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Go and invite them to participate in the relationship that Jesus has with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Go, invite them to be lovers, to be beloved, to be love itself. Last week we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended to form the Church. The Church, the mystical body of Christ, is the visible face of God, the visible manifestation of Jesus divinity in our humanity. Though the Church is imperfect and we as individuals are imperfect, the love of God dwelling within us in the person of the Holy Spirit is always present to purify our life, our love and our relationship to God and to one another. The call of our baptism is to respond to the Holy Spirit to live in love. Unconditional love means unconditional forgiveness. The Cross is God s unconditional love and forgiveness for all that separates us from him and from one another. To join in this love means that we have made the decision to participate in the life of God by obeying Christ s command to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves, relying on God s grace to overcome the sinfulness in our nature that separates us from love. Concretely, we love our family and friends even though they sometimes say and do things that hurt us. Our love for them (the relationship) is more important than their acts of unkindness. Through our love and forgiveness they are encouraged to repent (change the behavior), heal their relationships, and thus grow in the image of God. God wants this for us in our relationship with him and with others. On May 17th Bill Frere was ordained to the Diaconate at Holy Name Cathedral by Bishop Kane. Fourteen men from many nationalities were ordained and who will serve the people of God throughout the diversity of the Archdiocese. It was a beautiful and very moving liturgy. He will celebrate his first mass as a deacon today at noon, followed by a hospitality in the parish hall. Congratulations Bill and Ginger! They join Tony and Maria Delgado in the ministry of service to the people of St. Robert Bellarmine. The 8th Grade School Graduation was held on Friday. Twenty-seven students will be moving on to high school. They are a great group of young people. We will miss them even as we encourage them as they move on to the next phase of their lives. I hope to have pictures for the bulletin next week. The School Board will host Coffee and Donuts next weekend after all the masses. Also next weekend, there will be a second collection for the Fund for Retired Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. While I don t expect to retire for many years, I am grateful for your support for these men who have served so generously in our parishes throughout their lives. Please see page four for details. This ministry serves children, by proclaiming God s word on a level that they understand, and by reflecting on its meaning in their lives. It will most likely be held in Kernaghan Hall. We are looking for a few adults to create a team. No formal training is needed but there will be some basic instruction and of course you will need Virtus Training. How can our rich intellectual and spiritual traditions be passed down to the young people of our parish? Who will teach the childrens hearts and minds what it means to be Catholic? We need you! The St. Robert s Religious Education Program needs you! You can team-teach with a friend or spouse, you can teach on your own. You do not have to be a professional teacher, experience helps but is not necessary and there are trained individuals, other catechists and myself to help you. Training is offered beginning in late August and goes throughout the year. Saturday mornings twice a month for 16 weeks September-April 2 openings for 3 rd and 6 th 5 th, 7 th, 8 th (we are growing and need your help) Whether you are single or married, with or without children, old or young, it is everyone s responsibility.
