Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah tells us that God will provide for all peoples a feast and that he will destroy death forever. He proclaims that the Lord will wipe away the tears from every face. Because of this, we are told to rejoice and be glad for God has saved us. St. Paul tells the Philippians that it is essential to rely on God in all circumstances, whether one is living in abundance or in need. He teaches them, and us, that all things are possible in Christ, since he alone is our source of strength. In Matthew s gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a wedding feast. The king dispatches servants to inform the invited guests that the time is ready for his son s wedding. They refused to come, and even after given a second chance by the king, they beat or killed the messengers. Enraged, the king has them destroyed, and tells his servants that the invited guests were not worthy to come. He tells them to go out and invite to the feast whomever they find. When one of the newly invited guests comes without a wedding garment, the king has him thrown out, explaining that many are invited but few are chosen. Isaiah 25:6-10a Philippians 4:12-14, Mathew 22:1-14 World Mission Sunday Next Sunday Catholic parishes around the globe will celebrate World Mission Sunday and take up a second collection for the evangelization (missionary) efforts of the Church. Jesus gave us the commandment to go to all the nations baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and to teach everything that he taught us. God wants all people to know his love for them and receive his salvation. Many men and women have responded to God s call and have left their homes, families and friends to proclaim the Gospel. The collections go to support them in the poorest areas of the world and to make it possible for them to live and carry out this great commission. Ultimately however, the collections are not about money. They are about the transformation of the world, not just those who receive the message but those of us who support the collections as well. When we unite our prayers and our generous financial sacrifices to the needs of the world, God opens our hearts to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit that unites us more closely to himself and we receive the very gift of salvation that we share with others.

3 Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures continue the theme of God s invitation to participate in his heavenly kingdom. God wants us to share his life and his love. He calls everyone to share in this joy. But because God loves us, he respects our dignity. He has given us free will and allows us to make a choice of whether or not we will accept his invitation. The Prophet Isaiah gives us the vision of the kingdom. On this mountain (heaven) the Lord will provide a banquet of rich food and choice wines. He will destroy the veil that prevents people from seeing the kingdom in front of them. He will dry our tears and destroy death forever. The people that come to the mountain will rejoice because they know that God has saved them. This is a wonderful promise that is available to everyone. And yet, everyone does not accept the invitation. In the gospel Jesus tells us the parable of a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, inviting all his friends. Oddly, they refused to come. Some ignored the invitation, and some even beat and killed the servants who brought them the invitation. Shockingly, the king responded by killing the invited guests, saying that they were not worthy. He then invited anyone he could find, the good and the bad alike. Jesus provides a very stern warning on the consequences of refusing God s invitation. We are the invited guests. Why would we turn down such a wonderful banquet that God promises? Many of us, like those in the parable, ignore the invitation because we are too busy. We don t pay attention to the presence of God in our lives or to the obligations that are part of our responsibility as children of God. We beat and kill his servants when we refuse to act on God s Word, in our failure to love our neighbor as ourselves, when we fail to share the gifts and blessings God has given us, when we have a meanness of spirit, when we angrily judge others or their motives, when we refuse to forgive others or deny them the respect and dignity we claim for ourselves. This beating and killing of his servants is to deny God; who in turn, Jesus says, will deny us. The servants go out and bring in anyone they find. One of the guest arrived without a wedding garment. This guest was cast into the outer darkness. Those who show up at the banquet without a proper gift will not be allowed to participate in the feast. God will ask each one of us, Where is your wedding garment? Have we put on Christ and shared the gifts he gave us? Will we celebrate with God in heaven or be cast into the outer darkness? Jesus invites us to hear the words of the prophet Isaiah, raise our eyes to the mountain and join him in his heavenly feast. Respect Life Month is a reminder to seriously reflect on our knowledge of, and attitudes toward, all life issues. Today s gospel reminds us that our own salvation depends upon our respect for the dignity of all people, honoring Christ in them by working for God s kingdom here on earth where all our brothers and sisters have a place at the banquet table. Our sisters and brothers in Puerto Rico, a nation that is 95% Catholic, are in desperate need of being included in our hospitality. Hurricane Maria has nearly destroyed the island s infrastructure. It will be months before power is fully restored. In the meantime they rely on generators to supply power. This is especially critical in hospitals and nursing homes as well as schools. They are in need of diesel fuel as well as food, water, medicines and cleaning supplies. Deacon Bill along with the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago are be organizing a collection of cleaning supplies through a Buckets of Hope collection to be delivered to Puerto Rico. See page 9 for more details. One of the ways our parish works to welcome everyone is through our SPRED Group. We will celebrate a special SPRED Mass next Sunday at the noon mass, followed by light refreshments in Kernaghan Hall. There will be a second collection next weekend for World Mission Sunday to support the world-wide missionary efforts of the church. Please see page two for details. I am giving a retreat this weekend in Lemont for seventy-five men who want to deepen their relationship with God and to become better husbands, fathers and friends. Please keep these men in your prayers. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
