God tells Ezekiel that he must inform the people whatever he is instructed to say or Ezekiel will be held responsible for their sin. God says to Ezekiel that, if he does not speak out, the wrongdoer will die in his guilt. But God also says that he will hold Ezekiel responsible for his death. In light of Ezekiel s warning, St. Paul s seemingly simple reading to the Romans takes on more significance. St. Paul says, owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another. He then lists a few of the ten Commandments and says they are all summed up in the one command to love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). Paul continues and says, Love is the fulfillment of the Law and does no evil to one s neighbor. In the gospel of Matthew Jesus says, If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault. Jesus says we then may win him over and if not, he instructs us that we may need to turn up the heat. He says we should bring the fault before other witnesses and then to the whole church if necessary. Ultimately, the sinner who refuses to listen is to be shunned. Jesus then gives the disciples the authority to forgive sins and promises that when two or three are gathered in his name, he is there among them. Ezekiel 33:7-9 Romans 13:8-10 Matthew 18:15-20 Emergency Relief Special Collection: Hurricane Harvey Disaster Victims On August 26, Hurricane Harvey, a powerful Category 4 storm, made landfall along the Gulf Coast of Texas, causing several deaths and injuries, and bringing catastrophic flooding and property damage to the region. Catholic Charities USA is working to provide emergency relief and support to those affected by the devastation. A second collection will take place in parishes across the Archdiocese of Chicago on the weekend of September 9th and 10th to benefit those affected by this natural disaster. Please keep those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in your prayers as they face the short-term and longterm effects of this storm.

3 Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s readings entrust us with the responsibility for the spiritual well-being of our brothers and sisters, to call them back to the Covenant when they have gone astray. While we are all accountable for our own sins, Christians nevertheless will be judged guilty, losing our own salvation, if we do not make the effort to help others overcome their faults. As with all responsibility, prudent judgment and courage are required. But most of all it requires a sincere desire to reach beyond ourselves for the good of the other (and the community) and freedom from self-seeking motives. In the first reading, God tells the Prophet Ezekiel that when he, God, speaks, Ezekiel has the responsibility to warn the Israelites. While the wicked ones will surely die, the prophet will be judged guilty for not warning the sinner to turn from his wickedness. Because God has chosen Ezekiel to be his messenger, Ezekiel is required to speak out. Jesus tells the disciples the same thing in the gospel. If someone sins against you, speak to him privately of his fault. This is out of respect for his dignity. We are made in God s image and anything that helps us grow in that image is a good thing. Only if the other doesn t listen, should the disciple take one or two other witnesses so that the truth may be established. In other words, when we are going to criticize another we d better be sure that we are right and that our perception of reality is supported by others. Since our goal should be to help the other person (the sinner ) we need to make sure that our understanding is correct. Finally, if the sinner doesn t listen, Jesus says to bring the matter before the Church. This is important because the Church has the teaching authority of Christ and because the faith community will probably have an objective view of the situation. We are not to gang up on someone or be part of a group with an agenda. Finally, if the sinner does not listen to the Church he is to be cast out. Jesus gives the disciples the authority to forgive sins or to withhold forgiveness if there is no repentance. Remember that Jesus goal is unity and harmony among the faithful. Christ left us the Church to guide us on our pilgrim journey on earth. The teaching authority of the Church is to help us to attain salvation by providing a framework by which we are to make moral decisions. We are all called to listen to the Church, but we are reminded that the goal is to act in love (St. Paul tells us that love is the fulfillment of the Law). St. Paul reminds us of the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. We are to treat others as we would like to be treated. Jesus says that by doing so we will have won over our brother, restoring unity to our family and faith community. This requires prudence, a good sense of timing and courage. There will be a special second collection today in support Catholic Relief Services to aid victims of the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and the Gulf Coast. Due to the nature of the disaster, this is a last minute addition. My apologies for the short notice. Please see the article on page four. The Boy Scouts Popcorn Sale (page eight) will be held in the vestibule this morning after all the masses. The parish Flea Market (page six) is taking place today until 2 p.m. Everyone is invited. Tomorrow is the 16th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country, commonly referred to as We will always remember those who died, and honor those who have served and continue to serve to protect our nation. In a time of increasing violence, we need to be vigilant, but we cannot let fear destroy who we are. Let us all support and pray for our first responders. Let us also work to end the divisions and violence that plague our nation. Next Sunday we celebrate the Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine. Because he is also the patron saint of catechists, the Archdiocese celebrates Catechetical Sunday on the weekend closest to his Feast Day. We will focus on the importance of passing on our faith, particularly to the next generation. We will honor our catechists and faith formation leaders. We will also celebrate St. Robert with a special Children s Liturgy of the Word at the 10 a.m. mass. I know that a lot of Catholics are confused by the term Evangelization, especially in the recent emphasis on the New Evangelization begun by the late Pope St. John Paul II. Evangelization is simply passing our faith on. It just encompasses a lot more than simply preparing our children to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. It s not a term to be afraid, but rather to help us have a larger vision of what it means to be Catholic. I hope everyone enjoyed the Labor Day weekend. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 September 10, 2017 Children s Liturgy of The Word 10:00 am Mass This program is for our younger members, ages 3-8 yrs. Children are dismissed from the 10:00 am Mass, to pray the Liturgy of the word on a level that they can understand. They return to the assembly at the Presentation of the Gifts. We are in need of generous trained (Virtus) leaders for this rewarding ministry. For a list of upcoming dates, go to the Virtus website Great opportunity for adults, middle school, and high school youth to help these eager youngsters learn the Word of God. It requires a small amount of time in preparation and the willingness to lead or be co-leader. Usually, this program is the 3 rd Sunday of each month. We would love to run this program every Sunday so that parents may have a chance to attend mass and focus on hearing the word.
