SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY In the Old Testament Wisdom is personified, given the qualities of a human being. In Catholic theology Wisdom is identified with the Word of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, and with the Holy Spirit as the energy through which God creates. In the reading from Proverbs, Wisdom announces herself as being present with God from the beginning, as his craftsman in the creation of the universe. In this beautiful poetic narrative Wisdom says that she was God s delight and that she herself took delight in the human race. St. Paul tells the Romans that we have been justified by faith and have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. He reminds them that the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which he has given us. In the gospel Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. The Spirit will take what is Christ s and declare it to the Apostles. Jesus then says that everything that belongs to the Father is his as well, therefore the Spirit can declare the truth to them. This is an abstract way of saying that because Jesus and the Father are one, and Jesus is the Word of God, that the Spirit speaks the Truth of God and is therefore also one with the Father. The Trinitarian equality of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three Persons yet one God, can be seen implicitly in the scriptures, though there is clearly a deeper development from the Old through the New Testament. This understanding was formulated in more theological, formal language by the early Church at the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) and finalized at the First Council of Constantinople (381 AD). Proverbs 8:22-31 Romans 5:1-5 John 16:12-15 MEMORIAL DAY Our country celebrates Memorial Day this Monday. We remember all those who gave their lives in service to our nation, as well as their families who mourn them. We pray for them, for all our veterans, our active military personnel and for their families. In the reading from the Book of Numbers the Lord instructs Aaron to bless the Israelites that the Lord will look kindly upon them, bless them and give them peace. The gospel reading from St. Matthew is the litany of the Beatitudes. God blesses those who imitate the virtues of Jesus, bringing Christ to those around them. The mass will be offered for all those who have died in service to our nation and there will be a special blessing for all veterans and military personnel. Numbers 6:22-27 Matthew 5:1-12a

3 The Most Holy Trinity Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the unfathomable mystery of God s own divine nature. God chose to reveal His love to us through the Holy Spirit. We see this in the beauty of our world and in the order of the universe. In the revelation of Jesus as the Christ we see the divine nature become one with our humanity. The reality of God s presence to us is revealed through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that we can receive the Word of God and recognize the Truth in Christ Jesus. It is through the grace of the Holy Spirit that we can recognize the face of God made flesh in Christ Jesus, revealing the love of the ineffable God who has created us and called us by name. St. John tells us that the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ by taking his Word and giving it to his followers. In the process God is also glorified because everything that Christ has comes from the Father. This glory is the power, the love, the grace, the beauty, the wisdom, the mercy, the righteousness of God. In God all these attributes are the same. In our finite nature we see these as discrete virtues and often have trouble reconciling them to each other. For this reason St. John reminds us that the Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth. Ultimately, the Spirit calls us into relationship with God, allowing us to participate in the inner life of God. Though we only grasp it dimly in this life, we can receive the grace to enter into the mystery and experience the reality of God in our lives. Last week we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended to form the Church. The Church, the mystical body of Christ, is the visible face of God, the visible manifestation of Jesus divinity in our humanity. Though the Church is imperfect and we as individuals are imperfect, the love of God dwelling within us in the person of the Holy Spirit is always present to purify our life, our love and our relationship to God and to one another. The call of our baptism is to respond to the Holy Spirit to live in love. Life in the Trinity calls us to live in relationship with God and one another in unconditional love. Unconditional love means unconditional forgiveness. The Cross is God s unconditional love and forgiveness for all that separates us from him and from one another. Forgiveness of others can be difficult, especially if we have, indeed, been treated unjustly. But St. Paul says that he boasts in his afflictions. This is not an invitation to play the martyr, which is simply the soul destroying emotion of self -pity, but rather an invitation to imitate Christ who accepted wrongs and injustice with patience and forgiveness. The fruits of bearing our afflictions are endurance, character and hope. St. Paul reminds us that hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Last Sunday we dedicated the new gym floor with a special ceremony to honor the Jensen family, long-time parishioners whose generous donation paid for the new floor. In addition, the Sports Association has worked very hard for the last few years to raise the additional funds necessary to refurbish the gym with new mats, scoreboards, backboards, and other equipment to provide a first class, safe and modern facility for our children s sports programs. Many thanks for all their hard work. The Parish Inspiration Plan, developed out of the Parish Transformation Process held this past fall and winter, will be presented to the parish next weekend, June 1-2, after all the masses. This plan provides an overall vision as well as concrete goals that we hope to accomplish over the next few years to improve the quality of our parish life. Our future success depends on the active commitment and participation of the entire parish. I encourage everyone to come down to Kernaghan Hall next weekend to hear about the plan and to get involved. Please see the article on page seven for more details. Tomorrow, Monday, is Memorial Day, when we honor those who gave their lives in service to our nation. The mass will be at 9 a.m., and will include a special blessing for all our military personnel. Further details are provided in the article on page two. Please keep all our service men and women and their families in your prayers. The School Graduation will be celebrated this Friday evening. Congratulations to all our graduates and their families. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page 4 May 26, 2013 Our Sympathy and Prayers for all who have passed away. We pray for our recently deceased Ramon Hernandez Sandra Papajohn Julia Ouper James Archibald FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY This Friday, May 31, we celebrate the Visitation of the Blessed Mother to her cousin Elizabeth. In the first reading the prophet Zephaniah tells Zion to shout for joy and exult because God has given them a mighty savior. In Luke s gospel we hear the story of the Visitation. Mary goes to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is carrying John the Baptist in her womb. Elizabeth recognizes her as the mother of her Lord because the baby has stirred in her womb, leaping for joy when he sensed that the Messiah was present in Mary s womb. Mary then proclaims her Magnificat which we have echoed in prayer throughout the centuries. The significance of this celebration is to remind us that God is faithful to his promise and has given us a Savior who shows us God s love, mercy and fidelity. We are called to respond, rejoicing in God s love and loving one another. Please note: The Rectory office will be closed on Memorial Day. Word of Life Each of us is a creature, whose origin is the loving gaze of God, who looks upon us within His very self and draws us forth from this Love. This is the love that is the very being of God; the love of the Father for the Son, the love of the Son for the Father, the Holy Spirit that is love. This is what being created in the image and likeness of God means: to be drawn forth from love; created for love. Thus, every human life conceived in the womb is conceived with a spark of divinity! No wonder we cherish all life as sacred and worthy of the dignity of the children of God. No wonder we believe that all life conceived in the womb is worth all our effort to protect so that the child may come forth from the Light of God into the light of the world. ~ Most Rev. Paul D. Etienne, Bishop of Cheyenne, Life: Origins in the Trinity, Truth in Love: Re lecting the Good News of Christ, January 19, 2013

Doyle and family CATECHISTS NEEDED IN THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Our program is growing and more volunteers are needed. We are also trying to formulate a substitute list, for those interested in teaching when needed, as well as an RE Advisory Board, those willing to assist in decision-making for the RE Program. All of our classes depend largely upon availability of volunteers to teach the classes. Training is available and necessary for all catechists. That training will be provided. The work of catechists is vital to preserving our Catholic legacy, and it is a rewarding ministry. There is no better way to instill faith in your children than by sharing in their religious education as a catechist. Catechists, (teachers of religion) and adult and high school assistants are always needed. Our Catechists take special care to teach our children and the memories of the lessons are what keep our children interested in learning more about their Catholic faith and how special they are to God. These things are what will carry them through their lifetime. We hope many parents will consider teaching in our program. If you are interested in being a catechist, please call Debi DeMario at ext. 306 or srbre1@yahoo.com. Many thanks for continuing to support the St. Robert s Religious Education program. An Award will be presented to Melanie Persangi. Congratulation Melanie! lou are invited to hear more about St. Robert Bellarmine s Inspiration Plan following each mass on June 1st and June 2nd. What is this plan all about? St. Robert Bellarmine was in the third set of parishes in the archdiocese to participate in the mandatory Parish Transformation Project. The goal was to provide a holistic overview as to what is working well, what gaps are there to fill, and action steps to create momentum. When did all of this take place? In the spring of last year, Fr. Neil asked for volunteers to participate in this process. In September, 31 dedicated parishioners volunteered their time and talent for thirteen weeks. These participants were then split into three groups representing: Mission, Finance and School. Each week, the teams thoughtfully brainstormed ideas, challenged the status quo, prayed together, and ultimately considered how to continue to evolve and strengthen our faith-based community. They had homework. They did due diligence. They each came up with some dynamic plans. In February, the team leads presented to Bishop Manz for approval and consideration. To say the least, he was delighted with the plan and noted the enthusiasm reflected in the presentation. Today, the team has momentum. Now with an official "thumbs-up" and green light to launch, the parish transformation team is ready to share these ideas with you. What inspires you?
