St. Paul tells the Thessalonians to live holy and blameless lives so as to be ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus when he returns in glory. In the gospel Jesus tells his disciples to stand firm in the coming times of tribulation because when these terrible events occur they will know that the time of their redemption will be at hand. He exhorts them to remain vigilant and pray that they have the strength to escape the tribulations and stand before the Son of Man. Jeremiah 33: Thessalonians 3:12 4:2 Luke 21:25-28, The Season of Advent During the season of Advent, we prepare for the coming of Christ. Advent means coming or arrival. During this time of new beginnings we anticipate and prepare for the coming of Christ. In many ways Advent is a time of transition. We move from last week s Feast of Christ the King, anticipating Jesus return at the end of time to the Feast of Christmas when Christ will come to us in his humanity at the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Our scriptures today forecast the coming of the end of time. Weeks two and three of Advent this year have John the Baptist proclaiming the coming of the Messiah to establish his kingdom on earth (Jesus public ministry). Finally, the fourth week of Advent foretells the birth of Jesus at Christmas, the story of God entering into our human history. All of these scriptures invite us to reflect on our awareness of the presence of God in our lives. We light the candles on the Advent wreath, counting down the days until Christmas. This is a time of great joy for Christians because we celebrate the love of God joining our human condition to bring us salvation. We prepare our hearts and homes to celebrate with great wonder and awe this miracle of our faith. Advent, like Lent, calls for an examination of our lives. When Christ calls us home, will we be ready? Have we responded to John the Baptist s cry to make straight the ways of the Lord? Do we truly believe that the child to be born of the Virgin Mary truly is the Lord of our life? When we can answer yes to all of these questions, we can truly experience the joy of Christmas and the wonder of God s love.

3 First Sunday of Advent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we begin the celebration of Advent, the beginning of a new Church year. We will light a new candle each week on the Advent wreath. The candles mark the passage of time as we approach the birth of Christ. We have many seasonal preparations for the holidays: writing cards, buying gifts, decorating the tree and our homes, baking, cleaning, wrapping presents, Christmas parties, as well as trying to complete work and/or school projects so that we can enjoy some time with our families and friends. In the midst of all this, it can be difficult to prepare to welcome Christ into our hearts. The Advent season has its own rhythm and joys that are not to be missed. Let s not cheat ourselves by anticipating Christmas so much that we forget to truly make room for the coming of Christ during Advent. As we write our Christmas cards we can take the time to hold each person in our hearts and appreciate our relationship to them. In buying gifts we can try to find something truly meaningful that the recipient will appreciate. As we bake, clean and decorate, we can try to make it a family endeavor, sharing the work and the time with one another. We can put on some Christmas music and truly get into the spirit. (I m not one of those people who believe that the liturgically correct practice of no carols until Christmas Eve is the right way to celebrate the joy of the season.) Many of our Christmas parties can become obligations that are a burden rather than a time of friendship. In order to avoid holiday burnout, I schedule some social events with friends after Christmas (and sometimes after the New Year) so that we can truly enjoy our time together and our friendship. Many people are lonely this time of year. Perhaps we can make some time for a lonely relative or neighbor to brighten their holiday. Many people are struggling financially and are working extra hours in order to make Christmas happen. While it is important not to disappoint the children, and we do need some festivity in our lives, please try to find some balance. After all, it is not how much money we spend, but rather the time and the love we spend with those near and dear to us. And for those of us who are doing okay financially, we can share some of our blessings with those who are in need. All of us can do something to brighten this Christmas for others who might otherwise do without. Most of all, don t let Advent be a buildup that ends on Christmas Day. Anticipate the joy of the season rather than rushing toward Christmas. Our scriptures this week help us to keep the right vision. Jeremiah tells the people that the Lord s promise will be fulfilled. The Messiah will come, there will be peace and security in the land. The people were living in troubled and uncertain times. Jeremiah calls the people to wait in patient hope, trusting in the goodness of the Lord. St. Paul tells the Thessalonians to strengthen their hearts. They are to look forward to the coming of Christ who will come in power and glory. Jesus tells the disciples the same thing. They are to be steadfast and look forward to the coming of Christ. There will be tribulations (haven t we all experienced them?), but when the Lord comes our redemption will be at hand. Advent is a time to wait in patient hope, trusting in God. Although life is not always easy, we are called to reflect with gratitude on the blessings in our lives, knowing that God loves us and will take care of us. He will come to us in this life because he has come. He will come again at Christmas and at the end of time to bring us redemption. There will be an Advent Prayer Service this Tuesday at 7 p.m. It is a wonderful way to slow down and experience some quiet before the rush of the holiday season. The Holy Name Christmas Party will be celebrated this Wednesday evening. Tickets are available after mass or at the rectory. This is always a fun time. Please join us for an evening of entertainment, good food and fellowship. Proceeds will benefit the school scholarship fund. See page seven for details. The Sacrament of First Reconciliation will be celebrated this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. Please keep our children and their families in your prayers. The Parents Association will host their Pancake Breakfast this coming Sunday morning. Details are on page six. We will again sponsor the Giving Tree to make Christmas brighter for the children of our sharing parish Ascension/ St. Susanna and Marillac House. Please see page five for more information. Have a Blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

5 First Sunday of Advent Page 5 Bethlehem Gifts Christmas gifts for you and for your loved ones from the place of birth of Christmas, from the city of Bethlehem. Rosaries, crucifixes, nativities, figurines, last suppers, and more handmade from the olive trees of Bethlehem and Jerusalem in the Holy Land are available for sale after all masses this weekend. There will be a meeting of all Lectors and all those interested in taking on this ministry on Thursday evening, December 3 at 7 pm in the Church. It will be an evening to refresh our minds and our spirits. Please set aside the time for this important gathering. THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for our sharing parish - Ascension / St. Susanna through Sunday, November 29. Please place your donated items in the boxes provided in the vestibules and thank you for sharing with those less fortunate. Please - No Glass Containers! THE GIVING TREE Every Advent Season this Giving Tree reminds us as we prepare for Christmas to be mindful of those who are poor. Christ's humble birth and his message of hope for the poor are important to reflect upon throughout Advent as we prepare our hearts for Christ's Birth. If you would like to help out families in need during the Advent season there are several ways the Giving Tree could use your help. 1) On the tree you will find gift scrolls with the name of a child from our Sharing Parish - Ascension-St. Susanna in Harvey. Each person who takes one of these scrolls is asked to buy one warm item of clothing and a little toy. These gifts are to be turned in by December 13 th. 2) You can place under the tree items of warm clothing, warm bedding, and items for babies and young children such as toys or blankets. These items are distributed to members of our own parish as well as to agencies like Catholic Charities who distribute them to the needy of Chicago. 3) Another agency we support is Marillac House. They offer an opportunity for parents in need to select toys for their children. The age categories are 0-4, 5-8 and You are asked NOT to donate any weapon-like toys (Nerf, water guns, etc.) You are welcome to place unwrapped new toys under the Giving Tree for Marillac House and we will deliver them by December 17. Thank you in Advance for your Generosity.

6 Page 6 November 29, Just a brief note to thank the people that assisted me with my piano recital on Nov. 15. I am in debt to those that gave their time setting up, tearing down, providing refreshments, publicizing, typing/ designing the program. Without all the help I received, many details might have been different. I was humbled to see so many people in the audience! Also, thank you to those that were able to donate: I'm happy to announce the concert collection raised a little more than $1,200 for the parish music ministry. For those that weren't able to attend the concert, I plan to make a CD recording available and it will be announced in the bulletin. Dennis Costanzo
