He tells them that only those who have remained faithful to God and to his Covenant will be spared. St. Paul continues his exhortation to the Corinthians, telling them that not many of them were wise, powerful or of noble birth. Yet God chooses the weak to shame the strong, the foolish to shame the wise, and the lowly to shame those who count as somebody in the world. Therefore, they are not to boast before God. The gospel is Matthew s version of the Beatitudes, the nine blessings that will be given to those who have the qualities that describe the life of a disciple. Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemakers, those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, and those who are insulted and persecuted falsely because of Christ. Jesus tells them to rejoice for their reward will be great in the kingdom of heaven. Zephaniah 2:3, 3: Corinthians 1:26-31 Matthew 5:1-12a Feast of St. Blase St. Blase was a fourth century bishop in Armenia, renowned for his personal holiness and dedication to the physical and spiritual health of his people. He was tortured and beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. Legend has it that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle of intercession St. Blase became the patron saint for the healing of throats. Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. His feast day is February 3rd. We will celebrate individual throat blessings on Friday during the morning mass. Communal blessing of throats will be celebrated next weekend, February 4-5, at all masses. Common Threads: An expansion of SRB s Blanket Ministry Can you knit, crochet, sew, quilt or tie a knot? Prayer blankets can be a sign of God s presence as well as a reminder of the love, concern and prayers of the community. We need people of all ages and talent levels to donate materials and make blankets. To find out more, join us as we gather Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 pm in Kernaghan Hall. For further details, contact Deacon Bill at the rectory.

3 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Normally I begin my column with a commentary on the scriptures. I am using my column today to talk about a few important issues that affect all of us. My extended scriptural reflections, primarily on the Beatitudes, can be found on page four. One of the most critical issues facing our nation is the polarization in our society. It is an urgent need for all Christians and people of good will to end the divisiveness in our civil discourse and to actively work to promote the common good in our personal and public lives. Regardless of our political or ideological persuasions, all of us are called to respect the dignity of all people, perhaps especially with those we disagree. Jesus pointedly reminds us that we are to love our enemies and bless those who persecute us (one of the beatitudes in today s gospel). This calls for a twofold response. The first is to accept the legitimacy of the current government. President Obama was an incredible example of this principle in action. Though clearly he does not agree with the incoming administration, he repeatedly acknowledged the legitimacy of the election and was extremely gracious in facilitating a peaceful transfer of power. I was impressed that in the busyness of his final days in office, he and Mrs. Obama took the time to play with economically disadvantaged children in the White House playground. All of us should take a lesson from this example. The second part of our response, and equally important, is to work for justice for all people. President Obama gives us a fine example of this principle as well. He promises to speak out on important issues that affect the well-being of our nation. Pope Francis calls us to remember Catholic social teaching of the preferential option for the poor, and to go to the margins to welcome the stranger and care for those in need. Cardinal Cupich continues to speak out for a reform of our immigration policy that gives justice and welcome while providing for protection of our borders, for economic justice for all and an end to racism and all divisiveness in our society. But we must do this, as Martin Luther King stated so eloquently, in a non-violent manner, after we have purified ourselves from all anger and hatred. Last weekend Cardinal Cupich announced the parish groupings for Renew My Church. The goal is to make our parishes vital and sustainable so that we may continue to carry out the mission of the Church. Over the next few years, the parishes in each grouping will be assigned a facilitator to help us discern how to move forward. Our grouping includes St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Pascal, Our Lady of Victory, St. Constance and the Korean Martyrs Catholic Church. The timeline has not yet been determined when the parishes will begin the formal collaboration process. We will continue to do what we have been doing for the past several years, including our shared Confirmation celebration with Our lady of Victory; our Sunday evening Mass, combined youth program (which we hope to re-start this spring) and our Sacramental/Adult Faith Formation programs with Our Lady of Victory and St. Pascal, and the Four- Parish Mission, which also includes St. Bartholomew. Undoubtedly we will do more together in the future. In the meantime, please keep this initiative in your prayers and read the Cardinal s letter on page five. Last Saturday evening we celebrated Remembering Our Heritage. About 20 people, mostly long-term parishioners, came down to Kernaghan Hall after the mass to share some of their stories and memories of St. Robert Bellarmine and what our parish means to them. Our thanks to Nora Kerr, Trina Eifert and the volunteers for coordinating the event. Pictures and stories will be posted on the website and in future bulletins. It was a fun evening of food and fellowship. I learned a lot about our parish, and hope that all of you will take pride in who we were, who we are and who we continue to be. Today we begin the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. We will begin with a family mass at 10 am with a special blessings for the students, their families, and the faculty and staff. The School will host an Open House from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm. All are welcome to visit with our teachers and see the excellent work our students are doing. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page 4 January 29, 2017 Pastor s Scriptural Reflections Today s scriptures tell us what it takes to enter the kingdom of heaven. The sacred authors give us a list of virtues and character traits that identify God s faithful people. They are not merely giving us a list nor setting an ideal of perfection that none of us can attain. Rather, they tell us that those who seek to walk with God will exhibit these characteristics as a response to their faith in God. And God promises to reward them because of that faith. Zephaniah is trying to warn the people that it is their faithlessness that is causing their political problems. Having turned away from the Covenant, they have placed themselves outside of God s protection. They seek protection from Egypt, relying on political alliances and the strength of their armies. In less than a generation they will discover that this is not a good strategy and will find themselves exiled in Babylon. Zephaniah tells them to seek the Lord by living humbly, observing God s law and by working for justice and they will be sheltered on the day of the Lord s anger. God promises to protect the humble and the lowly who do no wrong, tell no lies and are free of deceit. His promise is that they will live in peace and security. A good reflection for all of us would be to examine our conscience based on Zephaniah s warning. Similarly to the people of Zephaniah s time, the Corinthians had become arrogant, thinking that they could rely on themselves for their salvation. St. Paul tells them that God alone is the source of wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Therefore they are not to boast about anything, except in the Lord. St. Paul reminds us that if we have anything in this life, whether power, wealth, intellect, worldly position or prestige, it is all a gift from God. These gifts are to be used wisely to build up the body of Christ; not as sources of ego gratification, pride or selfindulgence. In St. Matthew s gospel, Jesus attached a promise to each beatitude. To the poor in spirit are promised the kingdom of heaven. They are the ones who realize that all is gift and that without God they can do nothing. Because they do not seek the things of this world for their fulfillment, they participate in the life of God. Those who mourn are promised comfort. Those who mourn have compassion for others and their comfort is to be drawn into relationships that give life to the spirit. Those who are self-absorbed cannot be in life-giving relationships with God or their neighbor, family members or friends. The meek will inherit the land. Those who are humble are the ones who walk with God and thus inherit the kingdom. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied. These are the ones who seek God s will. They are satisfied because they live trusting in God. Those who hunger and thirst for the things and pleasures of the world can never be satisfied because there is never enough in the world to fill the deepest longings of our hearts. Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy. Those who are able to forgive and extend kindness to others will receive forgiveness and kindness from God. Those who cannot forgive or extend themselves for others have already closed off their hearts to God, and are thus unable to receive his mercy. The clean of heart shall see God. They are the ones who are stewards of their possessions and bodies, seeing them as gifts to be used for good purposes, not selfishly. They shall see God because they are properly oriented in their vision of life. The unclean cannot see God so they seek meaning in the things of the world that will pass away. The peacemakers will be called children of God. They are the ones who recognize that unity and harmony build the kingdom of God. Since Jesus is the only Son of God, to be children of God is to share in Christ s divinity. Those who are contentious, angry, or violent fracture this unity and do not bear any resemblance to Christ. Those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness are promised the kingdom of heaven. They are the ones who do the right thing and stand up for what is right, even at great cost to themselves. They have conformed themselves to the will of God, which by definition, is to enter the kingdom of heaven. Those who do not stand up for righteousness because they are afraid of consequences in this life cannot have eternal life. Those who are slandered and insulted for the sake of Christ are told to rejoice for their reward will be great in the kingdom of heaven. These are the ones who have such an intimate relationship with God that the malice of the world cannot shake their inner calm, even though it causes pain and sorrow. They already live in the kingdom of heaven. Those who deny Christ by what they do and say may escape tribulation on earth but have cut themselves off from the grace of God. To be blessed is to enjoy God s grace and know the intimacy of his love. If we have that love in our hearts, we will live the beatitudes. If we seek to make the beatitudes our way of life, we will experience God s grace and love. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

8 Page 8 January 29, 2017 Our Sacramental Journey A new series of presentations on the meaning of the Sacraments What does it mean to be Catholic today? How do we live our faith? The Sacraments have both a visible and invisible reality. The visible reality we see in the Sacraments is their outward expression, the form they take, and the way in which they are administered and received. The invisible reality we cannot "see" is God's grace, his gracious initiative in redeeming us by the death and Resurrection of his Son. Marriage Wednesday, February 1st 7 pm 8:30 pm St. Robert Bellarmine church Deepen your understanding of the life-long commitment that is the Sacrament of Marriage. Deacon Pat and Judy Casey, who coordinate the marriage ministry at St. Josaphat, will share their insights into the meaning, symbolism, history and theology of the Sacrament of Marriage.
