He tells them he will punish their wicked deeds. God promises his people that he himself will bring them to good pastures and will give them shepherds who will care for them. God further promises to raise up a righteous shoot from the house of David to save his people. Jeremiah is giving the people a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. In his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul tells us that it is Christ who is our peace, the one who reconciles us both to God and to one another. In the Gospel Jesus invites the apostles to come away to a quiet place to rest after their journeys. However, the people follow them. Upon seeing the weary multitudes, Jesus heart is moved with pity because they are like sheep without a shepherd and he began to teach them many things. Jeremiah 23:1-6 Ephesians 2:13-18 Mark 6: Reverend Robert Fedek, Pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish, to lead outreach efforts for Polish Catholics Fr. Robert Fedek will lead the archdiocese s outreach through the Polish Ministry Council also known as Rada ds. Duszpasterstwa Polonijnego. The ministries are designed to recognize and celebrate the traditions and meet the needs of our incredible Catholic family, Archbishop Blase Cupich said. Effective July 1, Our Lady of Victory Parish will also host the ministry which will move from its current location at the Cardinal Meyer Center.

3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk In today s scriptures we hear the promise of God to take care of his people. This promise extends to all of us today. In Jeremiah we hear God s promise to send the Messiah to save his people. In Ephesians we are told that we are reconciled with God through the blood of Christ which brings us peace and salvation. In the gospel we hear of Jesus compassion. The Prophet Jeremiah, writing at the time of the Babylonian Exile, tells the leaders of his people that God will punish them for being bad shepherds. By misleading the people and ignoring the Covenant, the princes and priests will bring ruin upon the nation and the people will be scattered to foreign lands. But God promises the people that he will be their shepherd and protect them from evil. The Responsorial Psalm is a beautiful expression of faith in this promise. God also promises that he will send a righteous shoot, a descendant of David to be our savior, bringing peace, justice and security. We see these promises fulfilled in Jesus, who, as St. Paul tells us, is our peace. It is Christ who reconciles us to God and to one another. According to St. Paul, Jesus preaches peace that will put enmity to death and give us access to the Holy Spirit. Christ offers us the possibility of reconciliation to God through his own blood so that we might experience his peace, allowing peace to reign in our hearts. The Holy Spirit enables us to overcome our own hatred so that we can be reconciled to one another. Only then can we take advantage of the atonement of Christ and be reconciled with God. In the gospel we see Jesus moved with pity for the crowds because they are like sheep without a shepherd. Like the leaders of Jeremiah's time, the leaders have been unfaithful to the Covenant and have led the people astray. Jesus seeks to bring them back, so he began to teach them many things. Before he feeds or heals them, Jesus teaches them. He proclaims to them the good news of God s love and calls them to the Covenant, to love God with all their hearts and to love their neighbor as themselves. This is the freedom and peace that St. Paul talks about in the second reading. Today we are reminded that we have seen the fulfillment of the promise of the Old Covenant. Therefore we can believe and trust in the words of the one who spoke them. If we believe the word of God and if we want the promise to come to fruition in our lives, we must trust the Holy Sprit to guide us in the way of peace with God and with all those from whom we are divided. Practically speaking, it is our response to God s love by living as Christ taught (in loving God and neighbor, living the Beatitudes and obeying the Commandments) that is the evidence of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, uniting us to God in this life and, we hope, in the next. Summer Capital Repairs: Two weeks ago I wrote that we had several construction repair projects going on this summer that were not budgeted. These projects are the installation of a new lighting panel in the church, installation of an ejector pump and re-routing the storm drains to prevent flooding of the property, replace the concrete slab by the school fire exits to prevent water damage, and re-plastering work in the convent. The simple reason that they are unbudgeted is that the regular Sunday and Holy Day collections do not cover all of our basic operating costs. Therefore anything beyond routine maintenance requires special contributions. I have been reluctant to add a regular monthly second collection to budget for these capital needs as several of our neighboring parishes do. However that means that we must rely on the generosity of our parishioners to step up to the plate to maintain our parish facilities. A few people have responded, including two very generous donors, so that over half of the needed funds have been given to the parish. We still need about $15,000 to complete all the necessary work. The parish does need your support. If all of us do our part we would be in good shape and no one would be overly burdened. The consultants that we hired to do a complete facilities analysis of the school should be wrapping up their study next week. Since many people are on vacation in the summer, Mrs. Mijal, the School Board and I will be meeting with them in mid-august to review the results and begin to formulate a long-range plan for the school.
