Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Third Sunday of Lent In the Exodus journey through the desert, the Israelites grumble against Moses because they are thirsty and there is no water. Moses cries out to the Lord in despair; and the Lord tells him to strike his staff against a rock. When he does so, out gushes a river of water for the people to drink. St. Paul tells the Romans that through faith in Christ we have hope in the Lord s mercy. Hope does not disappoint because God has proved his love for us: while we were still sinners Christ died for us. The gospel relates the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. She has come to draw water and finds Jesus at the well asking her to give him a drink. She is surprised because Jews do not socialize with Samaritans; and they enter into a discussion about faith. Jesus promises to give her living water. She comes to believe that this living water is eternal life in the Spirit. She acknowledges him as the Messiah and goes off to tell the townspeople the good news. Exodus 17:3-7 Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 John 4:5-42 Theft Alert There have been a number of thefts at some of the churches in our neighborhood in recent weeks, usually after the church has been opened in the morning and before the first mass begins. Money for candles or for the poor boxes are usually targeted. While we do not have any money boxes in our church, everyone should be extra careful about leaving valuables in the pews, especially purses and wallets. Also, please make sure that all doors are closed and latched after mass and parish/school events.

3 Third Sunday of Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today s scriptures remind us that the longings of our hearts can only be satisfied by God. The Psalmist tells God, As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. My being thirsts for God, the living God. So, too, we long for God. But so often in our need, even without realizing it, we look for something else to satisfy us, to slake our thirst. This is the problem the Israelites had in the desert in the reading from Exodus. They had a very real physical need for water. But they were so focused on their need that they ignored the fact that God was with them. They grumbled to Moses that he had brought them into the desert to die. They forgot that God had not only brought them out of slavery, but the Lord had also made the Egyptians so kindly disposed to them that they gave them great wealth to take with them. They forgot that God had just parted the Red Sea to let them pass in safety but the waters drowned their pursuers. They forgot that the Lord was leading them with his presence in the cloud during the day and the pillar of fire at night. Now they are thirsty and prefer to be slaves back in Egypt (where they grumbled for 430 years!). They are so self-absorbed with their situation that even Moses is afraid. Moses cries out to God and once more the Lord delivers them. Moses strikes the rock and God makes a river of water flow out for the people to drink. God meets the physical needs of the Israelites. But more importantly, he satisfies their spiritual needs, too. The woman at the well is looking for water which Jesus promises her. She thinks he will give her running water that will satisfy her need. But she realizes that the water from the well is enough for her physical needs. Jesus will give her the living water (himself) that will slake her spiritual thirst and lead her to the kingdom of God. We, too, can get so focused on our needs and wants that we forget that what is impossible for us is possible with God. We forget that our limits (and our limited vision) do not limit God. We forget his grace and his providence in our lives. This is very dangerous. When Moses despaired in the desert, it cost him entrance into the Promised Land. St. Paul reminds us that our hope is in the glory of God. And hope does not despair because God loves us, will not give up on us, and will not let us down. Notice, too, how the Samaritan woman returns to the village. Though she is considered a sinner, and somewhat of an outcast, the people listen to her because she invites them to find what she has found. She tells the people, Come, see a man who told me everything I have ever done. Could he possibly be the Christ? We, too, must recognize our faults, be open to receive God s mercy, and then witness to what God has done for us and invite others to share the joy of a relationship with the Lord (salvation, a place at the banquet table, entrance to the kingdom of God). Last Saturday we enjoyed good food, music and friendship at the St. Patrick s Day Party. Thank you to The Parents Association and all volunteers who worked so hard so that all of us could have a good time. Of our many great social events, this really is one of my favorites (and I m not even Irish). The RCIA First Scrutiny will be celebrated at the 8 a.m. today. Please keep Owen Haroldson and his family in your prayers as he prepares to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter. The Four-Parish Mission will be held at St. Bartholomew this week. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the Sparough family will share their ministry Wise Fools and Happy Stewards with the themes of Discipleship, Reconciliation and Mission. Everyone is invited to attend all or any one of these events. The Mission begins each evening at 7 p.m., followed by hospitality and refreshments. Please see page five for details. I am pleased to announce that we have hired a new Youth/Young Adult Minister. Maria Siap will be joining our staff on June 19th. This will be a full time position shared with St. Pascal. I have high hopes that she will be able to lead a revitalization of our outreach to young people in our community. Maria will share with us her biographical information and her vision of her ministry later this spring. Don t forget to visit the St. Joseph Sweet Table after mass today. If you know of someone who wants to stay in touch, get a visit from a Minister of Care or receive a prayer blanket, please contact the Rectory. St. Robert s is looking for adults who would like to be trained as altar servers for the Saturday morning Mass and for weekday masses when school is not in session. Interested? Contact Deacon Bill at the Rectory. St. Constance Woman s Club is hosting a Lenten Program on Monday, March 27, All women are invited to meet in the Church, 5841 W. Strong Street, Chicago, at 6:30p.m. for Mass, followed by the Stations of the Cross as Seen Through the Eyes of Mary. Afterwards, all will gather in Borowczyk Hall for a simple Lenten meal of soup and bread. The regular monthly meeting will then take place. Come and prepare for the glorious feast of Easter. St. Constance Parish Presents Passion of Christ On Sunday, April 2, St. Constance Parish will host an English language Passion Play at 4:00 pm and a Polish language Passion Play at 8:00 pm in the church, 5843 W. Strong St. The Passion Play, presented by the Roman Catholic theatrical prayer group Wieczernik Cenacle, a nonprofit theatrical organization associated with St. Hyacinth Basilica, tells the story of the ministry of Jesus with all passages taken from Sacred Scripture, played out by a cast of actors, and accompanied by music and original set design.
