Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time In the reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people to obey God s commandments and God will be faithful to them. He gives the people the great commandment to love God with all their heart and all their soul and all their strength. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews contrasts the Levitical priests, who could not continue in office because they died, to the eternal priesthood of Christ who lives forever. In the Gospel reading, the scribes ask Jesus what is the greatest commandment. He quotes Moses from the first reading to love God with all your heart and soul. Jesus goes on to add the second commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself. Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Hebrews 7:23-28 Mark 12:28b-34 Enhanced Sound Quality for Sunday As you are aware, St. Roberts recently purchased a new organ to enhance the musical worship at our church. This was made possible from your generosity to the To Teach Christ Is campaign. In addition, again through your financial support of the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, we were able to purchase a Seiler Grand Piano at an approximate cost Your continuous financial support has made it possible for St. Roberts to upgrade both instruments in our church this year. This is a very exciting time for our parish. We hope enjoy the new Responding to Domestic Violence in Our Community On Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, Fr. Charles W. Dahm, O.P, Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago, will preach at all the Masses at St. Robert Bellarmine. Although largely unseen, domestic violence is rampant in the United States, including in our community. Calls about domestic violence are the most frequent received by local police in our community. On Monday, November 5, Fr. Dahm will speak in Kernaghan Hall at 7:00 pm with those parishioners interested in learning more about domestic violence and/or helping our parish respond to the needs of victims in our community as sensitively and compassionately as we can.

3 Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scripture readings this week remind us of the essential tenets of our life and faith. The reading from the Book of Deuteronomy gives the central profession of faith. These are the most significant words in the Hebrew Scriptures, the command Hear, O Israel. The Shema Israel comes from the Hebrew word listen we hear the greatest commandment. Moses calls us to pay attention because God is telling us something important. What he is telling us is to obey (from the Latin word obedecere, to listen) this greatest commandment of God: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all your strength. Moses continues with the injunction to take to heart these words which he enjoins on them that day. In the Christian faith we often hear the question, Why should we obey God? God sounds like an egotist, demanding that we love him and obey him. It is the wrong question to ask. If we truly believed that God loves us and has our best interests at heart, then we would understand that his commandments are not those of a master to a slave, or designed to take away our fun or freedom. God s commandments are designed to help us fulfill our destiny, which is to be united with him in this life and the next. Moses answers the question anyway, making this clear with God s promise to those who listen: so that they may have a long life and prosper, to live in a land flowing with milk and honey (security, freedom from want, enjoying the good gifts that God has promised). St. Mark picks up this theme in the gospel. One of the scribes asks Jesus what is the greatest commandment of the law. Jesus first quotes the Shema Israel and follows it with the second commandment, quoting the Levitical Law, to love your neighbor as yourself. He says that there is no greater commandment than these. The scholar agrees with him, saying that this is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. Jesus replies that the scholar is not far from the kingdom of heaven. Jesus gives the man this compliment because he sees that he has the right vision of faith. The kingdom of heaven (fulfillment of the promise) is attained when the vision is put into action. Finally, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us we can trust what Jesus says because he is the high priest who himself is innocent and undefiled, higher than the heavens and who offered himself as the one sacrifice for sin. It is the role of the priest to intercede with God on behalf of the people. Since Jesus priesthood is eternal, he is always able to save those who approach God through him. So our scriptures give us hope and direction. It is through unconditional love of Christ that we have hope for salvation. When we accept the injunction to Listen, O People through love for God expressed through love of neighbor (right understanding and right action) we are able to approach the kingdom of God. The summary of our parish financial operations for the fiscal year that ended this past June 30th, along with my commentary, can be found on pages nine ten and eleven. If you have any questions please call me or our Business Manager, James Ouper, at the rectory. We held our semi-annual New Parishioner Dinner this past Tuesday. We welcomed twenty-seven new families since our last gathering. Thank you to our welcome wagon volunteers who hosted the event. Domestic Violence is a terrible sin that destroys the lives of families. Since the family is the domestic church, violence against any family member is violence against God himself. Fr. Chuck Dahm, the Archdiocesan Coordinator for Domestic Violence Awareness, will be at all the masses this weekend to help us understand the nature of this terrible problem that affects one in every three families. He will also host a seminar on Monday evening to help us discern what we can do as a parish to help bringing healing to these families. The Sports Association will sponsor their annual Comedy Night this Saturday. This is a fun event and fundraiser for the school. All adults over 21 years of age are welcome. Please see page eight for ticket information. Next Sunday we will celebrate Veterans Day, a chance to remember those who served in the armed forces to defend our freedoms, to honor them and thank them. Returning veterans also need our help to adjust to civilian life, to find jobs and medical care. Many retired veterans depend on the VA for medical care. We can support our veterans by supporting these critical needs in their lives. Speaking of which, Tuesday is Election Day. Please remember to vote, a right we have thanks to the sacrifices of our veterans throughout the centuries. Please consider their needs and the common good when you enter the voting booth. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

9 Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 9 St. Robert Bellarmine Church November 4, 2018 Dear Parishioners, This year s financial results were disappointing because we have a wonderful and vibrant parish that is not reflected in our operating results. Overall, we had a total net operating loss of $145,000, compared to a nearly break-even result of minus $5,000 last year. On the church side, the church net loss of just over $29,000 was primarily due to an increase in salary and benefit costs of $40,000, while donations were flat compared to last year. The payroll increase of 9% reflects normal wage and benefit increases, as well as the addition of our new Youth Minister. The losses were partly offset by increases in the Christmas and Easter collections which mostly came from one very generous donor. Without this contribution, the Christmas and Easter collections would have been the same as the previous year. Our maintenance expenses were $15,000 lower than last year, though we expect them to return to normal levels this year. All other operating expenses were $14,000 (or 5%) higher than last year. On the bright side, our Faith Formation (Religious Education) program enrollment gained 27 students this year. The School net loss of $115,000 was entirely due to an unanticipated decrease in enrollment (minus 19 students), while staffing levels reflected the prior year s enrollment. As a result, tuition and fee revenues were flat (down about 1%), while salaries and benefits increased $170,000 (up nearly 11%). These losses were partially offset by decreased maintenance expenses ($26,000) and delayed purchases of Books and Equipment ($37,000). Unfortunately, we do not expect to have these savings moving forward. We were able to cover most of the shortfall thanks to Bequests of $51,000, the final repayment by the Archdiocese of a school covenant loan (from 2012) of $30,000, extraordinary Interest Income on our endowment accounts of $31,000, and the Annual Appeal rebate of $3,000. The remaining $30,000 came from our savings. Capital Project Income of $96,000 was primarily related to the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign (which will be spent in future years). Separately, we intend to publish regular reports on the on-going income and project expenses for the capital campaign. While I do believe that we are a vibrant parish, we have some areas of concern. Regular Sunday Collections continue to lag, down 5% from two years ago. Our Mass Attendance continues to decline, in spite of a small uptick in In the current year, our Faith Formation program enrollment has dropped substantially this year (as it has in most of the surrounding parishes). With the uncertainties of the stock market, we cannot count on large returns on our endowment accounts nor can we count on Bequest income to meet our operating expenses. The School decline in enrollment from last year has slowed, but due to contract agreements from the prior year, our staffing levels are still too high. We have hired a new principal and added the positon of assistant principal to address these issues, but in the short term the school subsidy will increase substantially as it takes time for a turn-around program to take effect. The financial results for the year ended June 30, 2018 are shown on the following pages. If you have any questions, please call me, our Business Manager James Ouper or any member of the Finance Committee. Thank you for your continued generosity and support. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
