God puts forth the choice to each person: good and evil; life and death. Whichever one he chooses shall be given to him. St. Paul tells the Corinthians that he preaches the mysterious, hidden wisdom of God. He quotes the prophet Isaiah that eye has not seen what God has prepared for those who love him. Jesus tells the disciples that he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. Therefore whoever breaks the least part of the law is guilty. He tells them that unless their righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees they will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Sirach 15: Corinthians 2:6-10 Matthew 5:17-37 Children s Choir On Sunday, February 19, the SRB 3rd & 4th grade students will sing at the 10 am Mass. Please arrive in Church by 9:30. Students should dress in their Sunday best when singing in church.
3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk The scriptures today describe what a life of faith looks like in concrete everyday terms. The Wisdom of Sirach tells us that obedience to the Lord s commandments gives life. St. Paul reminds us that God s wisdom is greater than human wisdom and it is directed toward salvation. Jesus tells us that he has come, not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it, and reminds us that we must imitate his obedience to the Law if we wish to attain the kingdom of heaven. God does not place impossible demands upon us. Sirach tells us we have the power to obey God s commandments which lead to salvation. Of course salvation comes through faith in Christ, which is the uniting of our souls with his. The requirement to obey the commandments that the Lord gives us is the path to union with God himself. Not because the acts themselves merit salvation but the spirit of desire to live in union with God, seeking his wisdom in our lives, leads to right action. These good deeds, and avoidance of evil deeds, are the fruit that shows the light of God to others (Jesus commandment to the disciples in last Sunday s gospel). Sirach reminds us that God gave us free will. We have the power to choose life or death, good or evil, and that we will reap whichever choice we make. He also reminds us that we have the power to obey the commandments if we choose to do so. Sirach equates trusting in God with the choice to act on God s word. Because God s wisdom is greater than ours, this can require courage to trust when we can t see where the Lord is leading. So we are given the spiritual principle to develop the habit of virtue so that we can stay on the path that God has chosen for us. All three of our Scripture writers give us the motivation and the promise to stay on the path. St. Paul says that this mysterious wisdom of God has been revealed in Christ so that we can know the right road to follow. Our motivation is the promise that God has prepared a place beyond imagining for those who love him. Jesus simply says that those who obey and teach the commandments will be greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The reverse is also true: there are negative consequences for those who do not obey the commandments and follow God s Law. Sirach tells us that we can choose good or evil and that our choice will be given to us. God does not command us to act unjustly nor give anyone a license to sin. St. Paul tells us that the wisdom of God is not the wisdom of the world, which will pass away. Implicit in his instruction is that those who do not make the right choice of whom to follow in this life will not enter into the place that God prepares for those who do. Jesus tells us very clearly that, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. I don t think God is trying to scare us. Rather, faith is a choice. There is no such thing as passive salvation. Following Christ is an active decision of the will that has to be lived in the circumstances of our lives. Developing the habits of virtue, doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing, allows us to follow the will of God, even when the ways of the world are pulling us in the wrong direction. Most people are not bad people, but there are times when all of us get spiritually lazy and take the path of least resistance to get along. This is dangerous if it becomes habitual and we no longer give much, if any, thought to the spiritual consequences of our actions. The Annual Catholic Appeal begins today with an overview by our Finance Committee Chair, Jeff Griggs, followed by student testimonials. Pledging to the Appeal will continue for the following two weeks. Unlike years in the past however, there will be no in-pew pledging process, nor will time be taken away from the homily. Because our goal is only half of last year s goal, and every dollar above that comes back to the parish, we have a great opportunity to fund some new faith formation initiatives. Please read the article about the Appeal on page seven and consider a generous pledge. Thank you for all your support. This Thursday the priests of the Archdiocese will again gather with Cardinal Cupich to continue our dialog on the future directions of the Archdiocese. Please keep us all in your prayers. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday, February 24th at Our Lady Of Victory. Please keep our young people and their families in your prayers. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

V.I.P. tickets will be sold after all masses this weekend through February 19. The cost of the tickets is $25.00 each and each month 21 winners will be drawn. One ticket gives you 252 opportunities to win a cash prize in the year ahead. Cash prizes range from $30 to $500. Tickets are limited, so buy early! Eucharistic Minister Training - Wednesday, February 15 at 7 pm in the Church Eucharistic Ministers help distribute the consecrated bread and wine to the community. As an extraordinary minister of communion, you are integral to the sacramental sharing that is the highlight of the Mass. Age requirement: Confirmed Catholic, eighth grade and older. Commitment: one training session; serve on average one or two Sundays per month. Serving in a liturgical ministry is a small commitment for you to make. However, it is a large contribution toward making Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish a welcoming community. You already attend Mass each weekend, why not share the hospitality you have experienced at Saint Robert Bellarmine Church with others? When we see a diverse group of liturgical ministers serving at Mass, it reminds us of our belonging and our equality in Christ. Come learn how to share the Body and Blood of Christ with your sisters and brothers as ministers of the Eucharist at Mass.

"Awakening Sacred Heart: The Gift of Attention" a talk by Tony Sorgi, will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in the Rectory Assembly of Immaculate Conception Parish, 7211 W. Talcott, Chicago, sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society. Freewill donation, refreshments, ample parking. For more information call Mike at Description We don't realize the great gift of simple attention. Have you noticed? No one can tell us what to pay attention to. Our attention is a sovereign power and the precious heritage of every human being and child of God. It arises directly from the illumination that is God's gift of being at the center of each human life. But the gift of attention is so lavishly given, like our breath, that we barely notice it. What did Merton pay attention to over the course of his life? How did his attention move him away from, and closer to God? How does the record of Merton's life call us to a deeper seeing? Our Speaker Tony Sorgi has been a lifelong student of contemplative practice, under the teachings of Jesuit and Benedictine mentors and spiritual directors, as well as a student of 16 years under a Tibetan Buddhist master. He recently completed a doctorate in clinical psychology, with a practice emphasis on mindfulness training in the treatment of trauma, and a research emphasis on the potential for contemplative practice to support well-being through advances in brief, online mindfulness training.
7 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure which accompanied your Bulletin and was available in the pews. This is an Annual pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable as a single offering or payable in installments. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds ministries right here at St. Robert Bellarmine such as our SPRED group. Because of the ongoing To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, our goal this year is only 50% of normal. Every dollar raised beyond our goal will stay right here at St. Robert s. This year, these additional funds will go toward establishing Religious Adult Formation programs and providing instructional programs in Evangelization at SRB. If you received a pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. Pledge cards and envelopes will also be available in the pews this weekend as well as the next two weekends for your convenience. Next weekend, we will have adult parishioners giving testimonials about what St. Robert s has meant to them. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Contact Alan Schmitt ajsre@aol.com or We need your help on legislation that will allow taxpayer funding to pay for abortions. We repeatedly alerted you to House Bill 4013 during the 99th General Assembly, which ran from January 2015 through Jan. 10, The 100th General Assembly was sworn in on Jan. 11, 2017, and with it came new legislation that, again, allows taxpayer money to be used to pay for elective abortions in state workers' health insurance plans and in the Medicaid program. However, the new legislation embodied in House Bill 40 goes further than HB HB 40 also deletes most of the preamble of the Illinois Abortion Law of 1975, which states that the General Assembly finds the unborn child to be a person and that if the U.S. Supreme Court decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton are ever reversed, then the "former policy of this State to prohibit abortions unless necessary for the preservation of the mother's life shall be reinstated." Call your state representative at his/her Springfield office -- the phone number with the 217 area code -- telling him/her to vote "NO" on House Bill 4013.
