He says that this is not difficult, for the law of God is not distant or remote. It is already written in their hearts. All they have to do is carry it out. This first part of St. Paul s letter to the Colossians is the beginning of an early Christological hymn proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the Creator and the Redeemer. Since all things were created through him, he is higher than the angels and all other spirits. Christ is also the first born of the dead, living now forever in heaven. St. Paul reminds the Colossians that it was through his death by the blood of the Cross that brings peace and reconciliation with God The gospel really gives two separate instructions. In the first part, a scholar of the law asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus asks him what is written in the law. The scholar responds with the instructions of Moses to love God with all your heart and all your soul and to love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus tells him that he has answered correctly. If he puts it into practice he will live. As a segue into the second part of the gospel, the scholar asks Jesus who is his neighbor. Jesus replies with the parable of the Good Samaritan. A man has fallen victim to robbers and lies wounded and bleeding by the side of the road. A priest passed by and crosses over to the other side of the road. In the same way, a Levite passes by and crosses to the other side of the road. Finally, a Samaritan (a foreigner) passes by and is moved with compassion. He binds the man s wounds, puts him on his donkey and takes him to an inn where he can rest and recover. The Samaritan also gives the innkeeper money to pay for the man s care. Jesus asks the scholar which of the three proved to be neighbor to the robbers victim. The scholar responds, the one who treated him with mercy. Jesus commands him to go and do likewise. Deuteronomy 30:10-14 Colossians 1:15-20 Luke 10:25-37

3 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scriptures today remind us that God s mercy and compassion are available to everyone, but the only way to experience them ourselves is when we show mercy and compassion to others. Moses tells the people that in order to receive God s blessings they must carry out his commandments. St. Paul tells the Colossians that through his mercy and compassion Christ has reconciled us to God by the blood of the cross. In next week s continuation, he tells them that in order to benefit from his sacrifice they must fill up what is lacking in Christ s sufferings (imitate Christ s compassion to alleviate the sufferings of others). In the gospel story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus tells the scholar of the law that one "inherits" eternal life by showing mercy to others. Moses tells the people that they must keep the commandments written in the book of the Law, and return to the Lord with all your heart and all your soul. Because the Law was very detailed, and only the teachers of the Law could know its fullness, the people doubted their ability to stay in God s good graces. Moses tells them that the Law is not distant and remote, but it is accessible to everyone. The Law is already in their mouths and in their hearts; they have only to carry it out. The same is true for us. One does not need to be a scholar of the Law in order to receive God s grace. We know the commandments. We are asked to live them out in concrete ways in our daily affairs. Jesus makes this explicit in the gospel story this morning. When a scholar of the Law asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus asks him how he reads the Law. The scholar quotes the Mosaic Law to love God with all one s heart and soul, with all one s strength and with all one s mind, and to love one s neighbor as oneself. The commandment to love God with all your heart and soul comes from the Deuteronomic Law that we heard in the first reading. The commandment to love one s neighbor comes from the Levitical Law known as the Holiness Code. By putting the two commandments together the scholar shows an astute understanding of God s Covenant. It is, of course, the Golden Rule of life, but with the promise that God will grant us forgiveness, mercy and compassion (eternal life) when we show mercy and compassion to others. After all, we cannot extend mercy and forgiveness to God nor "earn" his reciprocal generosity, so he makes the promise to us that he will accept the mercy we give others as given to him. So Jesus tells the scholar, You have answered correctly; do this and you will live. But the scholar is a good lawyer. He wants to know specifically who is the neighbor he should love. The scholars of the Jewish law had different definitions of neighbor to whom obligation would be owed. For some it meant one s immediate or extended family. Others were more inclusive, extending it to the entire tribe, including friends and acquaintances. The most expansive included all the Chosen People as well as the resident aliens and slaves. Jesus uses the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate his understanding of the Law. The Samaritan is a foreigner and a pagan, not part of the Covenant with God nor one of the Chosen People. If the Levite or the priest (Sadducee) helped the man by cleaning his wounds (touching his blood), they would be ritually unclean and thus unable to function in the temple worship. They are more concerned with their own "holiness" than with expressing the mercy of God. Only the foreigner shows compassion. Jesus, using the example of the pagan foreigner, instructs that all people are to be considered as one s neighbor. We prove ourselves to be neighbors by showing mercy and compassion towards all people. In this way do we "inherit" eternal life. We are in the process of searching for a new Youth Minister, to be shared with St. Pascal. This will be a full-time position which, by combining our programs, will bring a larger group of young people together. The Teen Group will be on hiatus until we get the new person in place. The Sunday evening mass will continue as normal, but without the teens, we are in need of volunteers to help coordinate the mass. Please contact Deacon Bill at the rectory if you are able to help. Our prayers and best wishes are with Beth Farias as she pursues a graduate degree in theology. Financial support of the parish has been down significantly in recent weeks. While mass attendance drops off during the summer as people take well-deserved vacations, the parish and school expenses continue all year. Please remember to send in your envelopes or sign-up for regular donations through Give Central. It is only through your consistent generosity that we are able to keep our parish vibrant and running smoothly. Have a great week and a peaceful summer. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Saturday, August 6 - Year of Mercy Holy Doors Pilgrimage Led by Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, Ph.D. We all have a need for God s Mercy. Come on a sacred journey into the goodness and tenderness of God. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, join us for a special pilgrimage to cross the thresholds of three Holy Doors in the Archdiocese of Chicago. At each stop we'll take time for personal prayer and reflection led by Fr. Richard. The Year of Mercy Holy Doors Pilgrimage will begin with 7:30 a.m. mass at The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, 1224 W. Lexington Street, Chicago, IL After mass, Fr. Richard will set the context for our sacred journey with a reflection on the Year of Mercy and the significance of passing through the Holy Doors. We'll then board a trolley and journey to the National Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in Lincoln Park. After we walk through the Holy Door, we'll have quiet time for personal prayer and a brief reflection with Fr. Richard in their Meditation and Contemplation Garden. Our pilgrimage will then take us to Holy Name Cathedral followed by St. Peter's in the Loop. Our final stop will be back at the Shrine for a discussion, closing reflection and prayer with Fr. Richard. Our sacred journey ends with lunch in the Shrine Hall at 1:30 p.m. (itinerary subject to change). $40 per person. Includes transportation and lunch. Limited Seating. These children, ages 10 to 17, come from the town of Lambersart and surrounding the City of Lille. The choir has an extensive repertoire of sacred music and harmonized popular songs. For the July 2016 Tour, they will sing works by Bach, Handel, Fauré, Mozart, Delibes, and traditional songs. Performances encompass the area of Lille, in France, and extend to include Europe and North America. Over the years, the choir was honored to perform at numerous special events, including the White House and St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. On January 1, 2016, they sang for His Holiness Pope Francis. Other performances included television programs, conventions, competitions and festivals around the world. The choir is constantly devoted to polyphonic music for children s voices, striving for musical quality and excellence. Through attention to the well-being and self-development of the choristers, the boys are culturally enriched. They attain personal accomplishment by singing and traveling. A few other words to sum up the choir include: Quality, Pleasure, Friendship, Altruism, Tolerance, Respect. During performances, these combine together as the boys demonstrate their passion for music. Staff Régis Decool founded the choir in 1970 and remained until his passing in Jérôme Cupelli took over in Mr. Cupelli is a graduate of the Conservatoire National de Région de Douai and he is an experienced musician with broad artistic vision. Hélène Martin, Associate Professor of Music, principal organist for Noyon Cathedral, and organist for Amiens Cathedral, is the organist during the July 2016 Tour. The MHdF is performing Tuesday, July 26 at 7 PM here at St. Robert Bellarmine with free admission. There will be a collection taken up for the benefit of the choir and CD s will be sold during intermission.
