The program begins with 8:30 a.m. Mass in the church followed by an assembly in Kernaghan Hall. Veterans, who are family or friends of St. Robert Bellarmine students, are invited to attend and share stories. Coffee and refreshments will be served. For more information contact the school at (773) or visit srb-chicago.org. NEW SUNDAY 5:30 P.M. MASS POSTPONED The New Youth/Young Adult Mass scheduled to begin next week has been postponed until after the New Year due to the Choir wanting more time to practice. The monthly calendar in last week s bulletin showing the new Sunday 5:30 mass beginning Nov 11 was sent to the publisher before we were notified of the delay. We apologize for the confusion. THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the reading from the Book of Deuteronomy Moses reminds the people to obey God s commandments and God will be faithful to them. He gives the people the great commandment to love God with all their heart and all their soul and all their strength. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews contrasts the Levitical priests, who could not continue in office because they died, to the eternal priesthood of Christ who lives forever. In the gospel reading the scribes ask Jesus what is the greatest commandment. He quotes Moses from the first reading to love God with all your heart and soul. Jesus goes on to add the second commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself. Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Hebrews 7:23-28 Mark 12:28b-34 PARISH ANNUAL REPORT The annual parish financial summary, sacramental statistics and education program enrollment numbers for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012 is inserted in this week s bulletin, along with my commentary on the results. This report was reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee at the October 22nd meeting. This report will be sent to all registered families in the parish and will be available in the rectory. Please read it carefully since it does reflect the current state of parish operations. This report will also be mailed to all registered parish households, along with a current update on more recent events not included in the bulletin. We are truly blessed to have such a vibrant and growing parish. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me or our Business Manager Kathy Goetz. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
3 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scripture readings this week remind us of the essential tenets of our life and faith. The reading from the Book of Deuteronomy gives the central profession of faith. These are the most significant words in the Hebrew Scriptures, the command Hear, O Israel. The Shema Israel comes from the Hebrew word listen we hear the greatest commandment. Moses calls us to pay attention because God is telling us something important. What he is telling us is to obey (from the Latin word obedecere, to listen) this greatest commandment of God: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all your strength. Moses continues with the injunction to take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today. In the Christian faith we often hear the question, Why? God sounds like an egotist, demanding that we love him and obey him. It is the wrong question to ask. If we truly believed that God loves us and has our best interests at heart, then we would understand that his commandments are not those of a master to a slave, or designed to take away our fun or freedom. God s commandments are designed to help us fulfill our destiny, which is to be united with him in this life and the next. Moses answers the question anyway, making this clear with God s promise to those who listen: so that they may have a long life and prosper, to live in a land flowing with milk and honey (security, freedom from want, enjoying the good gifts that God has promised). St. Mark picks up this theme in the gospel. One of the scribes asks Jesus what is the greatest commandment of the law. Jesus first quotes the Shema Israel and follows it with the second commandment, quoting the Levitical Law, to love your neighbor as yourself. He says that there is no greater commandment than these. The scholar agrees with him, saying that this is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. Jesus replies that the scholar is not far from the kingdom of heaven. Jesus gives the man this compliment because he sees that he has the right vision of faith. The kingdom of heaven (fulfillment of the promise) is attained when the vision is put into action. Finally, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us we can trust what Jesus says because he is the high priest who himself is innocent and undefiled, higher than the heavens and who offered himself as the one sacrifice for sin. It is the role of the priest to intercede with God on behalf of the people. Since Jesus priesthood is eternal, he is always able to save those who approach God through him. So our scriptures give us hope and direction. It is through unconditional love of Christ that we have hope for salvation. When we accept the injunction to Listen, O People through love for God expressed through love of neighbor (right understanding and right action) we are able to approach the kingdom of God. The Cardinal will bestow the Christian Faithful Award this afternoon during a special ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral. Pastors are asked to nominate a parishioner (or couple) for outstanding service to the parish or community. This year I am pleased to announce that Celeste Burke, along with her husband Mike, will receive this award on behalf of St. Robert Bellarmine. Celeste can be found around the campus nearly every morning, tending to the plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. She donates countless hours of her time and gardening expertise to keep our parish looking beautiful, as well as working with the Art & Environment Committee to decorate our church. Mike provides the heavy lifting, digging up roots and helping with the planting of the new trees and shrubs. Please share with them the gratitude we all feel and the joy we have in our beautiful landscape. On Tuesday I will be downtown at Northwestern University for the next class in the Advanced Pastoral Leadership program. There are forty-two pastors in our group this year from all over the Archdiocese. In addition to learning the principles of good leadership and management, we have the opportunity to share our real life parish experiences with one other. This is an exciting opportunity and learning experience that will help me to grow as a pastor. Next Sunday we will celebrate Veterans Day, a chance to remember those who served in the armed forces to defend our freedoms, to honor them and thank them. Returning veterans also need our help to adjust to civilian life, to find jobs and medical care. Many retired veterans depend on the VA for medical care. We can support our veterans by supporting these critical needs in their lives. Speaking of which, Tuesday is Election Day. Please remember to vote, a right we have thanks to the sacrifices of our veterans throughout the centuries. Please consider their needs and the common good when you enter the voting booth. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
4 Page 4 November 4, 2012 St. Robert Bellarmine Church October 30, 2012 Dear Parishioners, The past year has been successful and challenging in many ways. In a difficult economy our Sunday and Holy Day collections stayed even with last year. Unfortunately, the decline in the market value of our School Endowment Fund led to a loss of $50,000 in interest income from last year. Significant expense changes include increased maintenance expenses of $25,000 (resurface the front parking lot: $9,000; repair the church skylight: $5,800; replace the church hot water heater: $5,500; repair the church sound system: $5,200) and increased personnel costs of $18,000, primarily due to higher medical and insurance benefit costs. On the positive side, we held our first Harvest Gala Fundraiser that raised $24,000 in new funds. As a result, the net operating result for the church and religious education program was a loss of just under $23,000, compared to net operating income of $46,000 last year. The continued growth of our pre-school program and our aggressive pursuit of outside funding for scholarships resulted in an increase in school revenue of $50,000, partially offset by a $30,000 decrease in other school income, mostly due to lower outside donations. On the positive side, school expenses went down by nearly $50,000 in salaries and benefits due to the retirement of some long-term dedicated teachers. As a result, for the first time in our history the school actually operated in the black, with a $10,000 surplus from normal operations. The total net operating loss for the parish was $13,000, covered by a reduction of operating funds at the beginning of the current year (total parish operations broke even last year). We completed the pledge process for the Capital Campaign, receiving $105,000 in donations. We spent $125,000 from previously collected funds to replace the roofs on the school. We were able to renovate the rectory kitchen and dining room from a generous bequest ($30,000) and build a parish library in the church with a donation from another parishioner ($5,000). Going forward, I expect the same challenges to church revenues based on the continued sluggish economy as well as upward pressures on expenses due to rising costs for medical insurance, benefits and the cost of continued maintenance for some of our older buildings and equipment. I also expect the continued successful increase in school enrollment (current enrollment is up 45 students from this past June). We have new floor tiles in the junior building. We also received a generous donation to install a new hardwood floor in the gym, scheduled to be done this winter. The financial results for the year ended June 30, 2012 are shown on the following pages. If you have any questions please call me, our business manager or anyone on our finance committee. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
