Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Third Sunday of Easter In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter preaches the new faith before a crowd in the Temple area. He accuses his listeners of denying the Holy and Righteous One (the Messiah) and of putting to death the author of life. Then in a conciliatory tone, he adds that he knows that they acted out of ignorance; and that Christ s suffering was foretold in Scripture. Now they must repent and be converted to receive forgiveness of sins. In his First Letter, St. John tells us that he is writing so that we may not commit sin. He says that Jesus is the payment for all people s sins and that we must keep God s commandments if we are to have the love of God in us. Today s reading from Luke s Gospel describes another post-resurrection appearance of Christ. The disciples are gathered together as two of them describe an encounter with the Risen Lord, when suddenly Jesus stood in their midst. They were startled and terrified, thinking that he was a ghost, but Jesus calmed their fears by letting them examine his glorified body and even eating with them. The disciples calmed down so that Jesus was able to teach them and to open their minds to understand the Scriptures. Acts 3: 13-15, John 2: 1-5a Luke 24: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday, April 18 in Church 9am 5:30pm with Benediction at 5pm I know well the plans I have in mind for you, plans for your welfare, not for vice; plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:11) Eucharistic Adoration gives us an opportunity to spend quiet time listening for God s word. PLEASE COME VISIT WITH JESUS

3 Third Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk All of today s readings for the Third Sunday of Easter focus on the necessity of the death of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus has nailed our sins to the Cross in order that we might receive the forgiveness that we cannot achieve on our own. On Easter Day, Jesus poured forth upon mankind the merits which he had gathered on Good Friday (quoted from Blessed Ildefonso Schuster). Our Easter joy is the recognition of this truth. Our salvation is the humble acceptance of this gift. When the Risen Christ appears to the disciples, their first reaction is fear. They think that they are seeing a ghost, an unholy being from the realm of the dead. They do not yet understand the scriptures that the Messiah must first suffer and then be raised. Nor do they yet understand the implications of the Resurrection and the glorified body. Jesus reassures them that it is truly he, himself. Only then are they overjoyed and able to understand the truth that he has been telling them for the last three years of his public ministry. More than any other phrase in the gospels, Jesus tells us, peace be with you and do not be afraid. We get beyond our fears and doubts so that we may believe. Conversely, when we see with the eyes of faith, our fears will be relieved and we will receive the peace that only Christ can give. The gospel opens with the two disciples recounting what had happened to them and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread (the Road to Emmaus story). This is a reminder to them that Jesus continues to be present to his people in the breaking of the bread. In the gospel, Jesus eats a piece of fish, continuing the theme of the sacred meal, and explains the scriptures to them. He tells them (as Peter later explains to the Jewish people in our reading from the Acts of the Apostles) that the Messiah had to suffer and die for the forgiveness of sins. It is in the celebration of the Eucharist that non-mortal sins are forgiven (the daily failings due to human weakness). St. John tells us that Jesus has given us an Advocate with the Father to expiate our sins. He also reminds us that when we keep God s commandments (live in the truth of his Word), the love of God is perfected in us. In the Eucharist we are joined more closely to Christ as we recognize his presence. This real presence of Christ is the expiation of our sins and the fulfillment of his promise to remain with his people. This is indeed cause for joy and for giving thanks. Thank you to Jane Hearrin and the volunteers who are leading Children s Liturgy of the Word this morning and to the SPRED and Spirit Garden members who are hosting Coffee and Donuts after the masses today as well. Our First Communion candidates and their families are having their retreat this weekend as they prepare to receive the Sacrament on May 5th. Please keep the children and their families in your prayers. Our Conversations on Faith Series this year explores the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount from St. Matthew s Gospel. In this session of our series on the Beatitudes, coming up this Wednesday evening, April 18 th at 7 pm in the Church, Anne Chrzan, a Lifelong Formation Coordinator with the Archdiocese of Chicago, will share her reflections on what it means to be Poor in Spirit. Our Faith Formation (Religious Education) Program will conclude for the year this Saturday with a prayer service and social for the students and their families. Thank you to MaryEllen Casselman, the catechists, staff and volunteers who give of themselves to share our faith. The Parents Association is hosting Graziano Night on Monday, April 23 at the restaurant from 4-10 p.m. It is a good time to socialize with fellow parishioners and get a night out. 20% of your total bill (dine in or carry out) will be donated to the school. I want to thank the owners of Graziano s for their generosity, and invite our parishioners to show our support by patronizing their restaurant. The Red Ribbon Gala will be celebrated on Saturday, April 28 at Porretta s Banquet Hall. This is a fun evening to socialize with friends, have a good time and raise needed funds for the parish and school. I ask everyone to contribute in some way to the success of this event. Please see page six for details. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
