Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Dorothy Lieser, Arlene Placek, Deb Gilbert, Helen Weidig, Gabe Medina, David Smolen, Geraldine Kurtti Second Sunday of Advent Writing during the time of exile, the prophet Baruch brings a message of hope. He tells the Israelites to rejoice, for God will bring them back in glory to the promised Land. St. Paul tells the Philippians that he has great joy in them because they have received the gospel. He prays that their love may increase that they may be pure and blameless, and so give glory to God. In the gospel, John the Baptist begins his public ministry, preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He tells the people to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight his paths. Baruch 5: 1-9 Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11 Luke 3: 1-6 The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary On Tuesday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a defined dogma of the Church that Mary was conceived without original sin as part of God s plan for our salvation. Mary was full with grace so that she could be the perfect tabernacle for the infant Jesus, God himself entering our human condition. Because she was conceived without sin, she was able to open herself completely to the will of God in perfect humility. Thus she is our model as well as our mother. What God did for Mary through her Immaculate Conception he does for us in baptism, opening up for us the possibility of salvation. In the reading from Genesis, God confronts Adam and Eve for having eaten the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. God banishes them from the Garden of Eden as a consequence of their disobedience. St. Paul tells the Ephesians that God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing from before the foundation of the world. He has destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ. In the reading from Luke s gospel, we hear the Annunciation story of the Archangel Gabriel s visit to the Virgin Mary, telling her that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, she will be the mother of the Savior. Mary responds that she is the handmaiden of the Lord, may it be done unto her according to God s Word. Genesis 3: 9-15, 20 Ephesians 1: 3-6, Luke 1: 26-38

3 Second Sunday of Advent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Our readings move from last week s dire warnings to the more joyful news of the coming of the Messiah to deliver his people. We are still in the prophecies of the second coming. The prophet Baruch tells Jerusalem to take off their robes of mourning and put on the splendor of the glory of God. Her children will be brought back from exile and borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones, for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory. St. Paul writes with joy to the Philippians, exhorting them to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. We are to rejoice in the glory of God. John the Baptist proclaims that the promise is to be fulfilled in the present time, that all flesh shall see the salvation of God. These themes will be repeated in all three scriptures next week, with John the Baptist explicitly announcing the public ministry of Jesus. Like Jeremiah in last week s reading, Baruch reminds the people to look beyond their current circumstances and to trust in the promise of God. His message is one of great hope, focusing on the glory of God. This is an implicit reminder that their ancestors actually witnessed the glory of God when they were delivered from slavery in Egypt. God was actually present to them in the pillar of fire, on the mountain speaking to Moses and the assembly, and in the cloud of smoke and fire over the tabernacle of the Ark of the Covenant. This was the defining moment in the history of the people of Israel. Baruch reminds them that what God has done before he will do again. Jerusalem will once again live in the glory of God. The scripture is a good reminder to us as well to look beyond the current circumstances of our lives and to remember that God will not abandon us. John comes preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, exhorting the people to prepare the way of the Lord. The Baptist is quoting from second Isaiah, also an exhortation to the people in exile, promising God s deliverance (all shall see the salvation of God). In Advent we are called to prepare the way of the Lord by opening our hearts to receive the Christ. We remember the coming of Christ to deliver us from the captivity of sin and his promise to fill us with his glory forever. The joy we feel leads us to unclutter our lives to make room for his coming. Sin separates us from God. Advent repentance is opening our hearts to experience the presence of God. St. Paul prays that our love may increase in knowledge to discern what is of value, so that we may be filled with the fruit of righteousness. It is only when we seek God s grace that we can experience the glory of God. Yesterday (Saturday) we celebrated the Sacrament of First Reconciliation with forty-five children. It was a wonderful experience of the Lord s healing presence and power in our lives. Thank you to Mary Ellen Casselman and all the Religious Education team for all their efforts. We will celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation for the rest of the eligible school children later this season. The Parish Advent Reconciliation Service will be held on Tuesday, December 15th in the church at 7 p.m. Please don t miss this special time of grace. Our own Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will speak at all the masses today about the needs of Retired Religious in our country. These wonderful people have dedicated their lives in the service of God s people in our schools, hospitals, parishes and social service apostolates, caring for our families. Now they need our help. Please be generous in your support of next week s Retired Religious Collection. Today we celebrate the Rite of Welcoming at the 10 a.m. mass for those in our RCIA process. We welcome Rose Guagliardo to the Catechumenate. She is already baptized and will receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Please keep her in your prayers. On Tuesday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This wonderful celebration affirms God s love for the human race. Allowing himself to be born into our family, God gives us all the possibility of joining his divine life. It is a Holy Day of Obligation this year. I encourage everyone to spend this time with Our Lord Jesus and his Holy Mother to receive special graces in preparation for Christmas. Mass times are 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. We are all called to imitate Mary in her openness to God s Word, letting God direct our lives and order our priorities. Pope Francis has announced a Holy Year of Mercy beginning with this feast. Pamphlets and Prayer Cards will be available in the church. Please read Archbishop Cupich s letter on page seven. Have a blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

5 Second Sunday of Advent Page 5 RITE OF WELCOMING Today is a special day in our parish community. At the 10am Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Welcoming for Rose Guagliardo, Nicholas Acevedo, Kaylee Rodriguez, Alexis Yracheta, and Matthew Marcinkowski who have chosen to walk the journey of faith that is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. They have been working since August, and are now formally announcing their desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. This is a step in the process of RCIA and it is an important one that celebrates their continued commitment to learning about their faith. It is also a formal public announcement so that you may welcome them in and pray for them in the months to come as they continue to learn and grow preparing to receive their sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass. Please keep them in your prayers. REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS In an effort to show our appreciation to our Veterans, St. Robert Bellarmine School will be collecting items to send to our local Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois. Top Ten Requested Items: New white t-shirts, large or extra large, New Sweat pants, any size, New Sweat shirts, and size, Playing cards, Denture adhesives, denture cleaners, Current magazines--september-december 2015, Packaged socks, Packaged underwear, Paperback books, Lotions, Toothpaste, any Toiletries. This is a small way we can show our support and gratitude during this holiday season. Thank you for your generosity with this important project. Collection will begin immediately and end on Friday, December 11th. Items may be dropped off at the rectory. St. Robert Bellarmine Faculty Peace and Justice Committee THE GIVING TREE Every Advent Season this Giving Tree reminds us as we prepare for Christmas to be mindful of those who are poor. Christ's humble birth and his message of hope for the poor are important to reflect upon throughout Advent as we prepare our hearts for Christ's Birth. If you would like to help out families in need during the Advent season there are several ways the Giving Tree could use your help. 1) On the tree you will find gift scrolls with the name of a child from our Sharing Parish - Ascension-St. Susanna in Harvey. Each person who takes one of these scrolls is asked to buy one warm item of clothing and a little toy. These gifts are to be turned in by December 13 th. 2) You can place under the tree items of warm clothing, warm bedding, and items for babies and young children such as toys or blankets. These items are distributed to members of our own parish as well as to agencies like Catholic Charities who distribute them to the needy of Chicago. 3) Another agency we support is Marillac House. They offer an opportunity for parents in need to select toys for their children. The age categories are 0-4, 5-8 and You are asked NOT to donate any weapon-like toys (Nerf, water guns, etc.) You are welcome to place unwrapped new toys under the Giving Tree for Marillac House and we will deliver them by December 17. Thank you in Advance for your Generosity.

6 Page 6 December 6, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters, I have often thought of how the Church may render more clear her mission to be a witness to mercy; and we have to make this journey. It is a journey which begins with spiritual conversion. Therefore, I have decided to announce an Extraordinary Jubilee which has at its center the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live in the light of the word of the Lord: Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful (cf. Lk 6:36). And this especially applies to confessors! So much mercy! This Holy Year will commence on the next Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will conclude on Sunday, 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and living face of the Father's mercy. I entrust the organization of this Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, in order that it may come to life as a new step on the Church s journey in her mission to bring the Gospel of mercy to each person. I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God. (An excerpt from the announcement by Pope Francis of the Holy Year of Mercy) Come down to Kernaghan Hall after mass for Breakfast!
