Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Margaret Ludden, Robert Walsh, Patricia Klenck, Gina Brettman Third Sunday of Lent In the reading from Exodus, God speaks to Moses from out of the burning bush. The Lord sends Moses on a mission to rescue his people from slavery in Egypt and bring them to the promised land, flowing with milk and honey. When Moses asks God s name, the Lord responds, my name is I AM who sends you, the God of your fathers of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. St. Paul reminds the Corinthians that most of the people that God led out of slavery in Egypt were struck down because of their evil deeds and their grumbling against the Lord. St. Paul says that this is an example and a warning for us. In the gospel Jesus tells the people that those who were killed by Pilate or by the falling tower of Siloam were no worse sinners than anyone else. He warns them that if they do not repent, they, too, will perish for their sins. Jesus goes on to tell them the parable of the fig tree that has not borne any fruit. The gardener is instructed to nurture it for another season. If it still does not yield good fruit, it is to be cut down. Exodus 3:1-8, Corinthians 10:1-6, Luke 13:1-9 Our Lenten Journey: A Period of Purification and Enlightenment Lent is a time for all of us to grow deeper in our relationship with God. This is also true for the RCIA candidates who are seeking to join the Church and receive the Easter Sacraments. To aid them on their journey, the Church celebrates three rites of self-searching and repentance. These rites, called Scrutinies, are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, and then strengthen, all that is upright and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated to deliver the Elect from the power of sin, to protect them against temptation and give them strength in Christ. (From the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, #141). Throughout the season of Lent, the Elect seek to grow in their understanding of salvation in Christ and the mystery of sin. Knowledge of our own weaknesses, the need for healing, and the desire for repentance and conversion is not just for newcomers. All of us are in constant need of the grace of Christ. Celebrating these rites in the Sunday assembly not only helps the Elect by our prayers and witness, it also helps us on our own Lenten journey back to God. The Scrutinies are celebrated during the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent as we draw near to the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. The gospels from Cycle A are always used for the Scrutinies. The stories of the Woman at the Well, The Man Born Blind, and The Raising of Lazarus are used because they lead us more deeply into the paschal mystery from spiritual unawareness to the recognition of the need for God s healing and finally to personal resurrection. Please keep our Elect in your prayers as they prepare to receive full initiation into the Church at Easter.

3 Third Sunday of Lent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today, the Third Sunday of Lent, the scriptures call us to repent, not only of our sins, but also the good we have failed to do. The scriptures place a great emphasis on a life of charity as a necessary condition of salvation. Avoiding the commission of evil acts is only the beginning of a life of faith. Both the Old Testament Covenant and Jesus commandments in the gospel require a life of charity (self-giving love) in response to God s generosity to us. In the reading from Exodus, Moses is surprised to see a burning bush that did not appear to be consumed and decides he must go over and look at this remarkable sight. The voice of God calls him from the burning bush and tells him that he is on holy ground. God uses miracles to get our attention and to remind us that he is actively present in our world. The Lord identifies himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God tells Moses that he has witnessed the affliction of his people and that he, Moses, will be the Lord s instrument to rescue his people from slavery. The deliverance from Egypt is still celebrated today by the Jewish people in the Feast of Passover. For Christians it prefigures our deliverance (salvation) from slavery to sin through the death and resurrection of Christ. In the gospel story, many people are killed through no fault of their own. For reasons that aren t explained, Pilate has killed some Galileans and mixed their blood with the blood of the animal sacrifices. Many others were killed by a falling tower in Siloam. The thinking of that time was that misfortune happened to bad people; that because of their sins, they deserved their fate. Jesus says no; these people who perished were no worse than anyone else. He warns his listeners that they, too, will perish if they do not repent of their sins. Jesus goes on to tell them the parable of the fig tree that has not yielded any fruit in three years. The owner wishes to cut it down but the gardener prevails upon him to wait another year. He intends to water and nurture the tree. God is the gardener who is always willing to give us another chance. In the parable, the tree will be cut down if it does not bear good fruit in the coming year. Jesus gives them a warning that they will be responsible to God for their behavior. The lesson of the parable of the fig tree is that, while God is always ready to give us another chance, we have to respond. We don t know when the hour will come when he will demand an accounting of our lives. Notice, too, that the requirement for salvation is the bearing of good fruit. St. Paul warns the Corinthians that the Hebrews did not listen to God. Most of them died, not because of overt evil but because they grumbled against the Lord. He says don t be too sure of your own salvation, lest you stumble like the Israelites. God s Covenant calls us to the rejection of our focus on ourselves and our "rights" so that we may imitate Christ, embracing generosity, kindness and justice. God will judge us based upon our monetary generosity rather than anxiety about not getting enough of what we want; sharing our time and talents to promote the common good (the corporal works of mercy) rather than preoccupation with our own pursuits and pleasures; compassion toward others; forgiveness of the real and imagined wrongs others have done to us; honest admission of our sins rather than denial, blaming or justifying our behavior. Lent is a season of grace that allows us the opportunity to reflect on our lives and to sincerely seek the grace of conversion. We have received the final rebate check from last year s Annual Catholic Appeal. Our total rebate was just over $13,100. The Office for the Annual Catholic Appeal sends their thanks for all who have pledged to this year s Appeal and would like to let us know that that gifts received during Commitment Weekend have arrived at the Gift Processing Center and will be processed and acknowledged in the next few weeks. As soon as we are sent some figures, I will let you know what our pledge totals are. The Multi-Parish Mission will be celebrated this week on Monday through Wednesday evenings at Our Lady of Victory. Our speaker will be Msgr. John Canary, former Rector of Mundelein Seminary. He will draw on the spirituality of St. John of the Cross to explore the Seven Ways God Changes Us. Msgr. Canary has the wonderful gift of being able to translate the thoughts of the mystics into the everyday spirituality of our lives. On Tuesday there will be an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday evening in the context of the mission. All are encouraged to come one, two or all three evenings. Please see page six for details. Have a Blessed Lent and a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

7 Third Sunday of Lent Page 7 Eucharistic Adoration Volunteers Can you spend an hour with God Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. As Catholics we believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us". The third Wednesday of every month St. Robert s has Eucharistic adoration following the 8:30 am mass and ending with benediction at 5 pm. We are looking for volunteers that would be available to spend an hour with God in adoration during that time. Please call the rectory if you would be interested.
