Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah promises that the Lord will deliver his people from the Babylonian captivity and restore them to the Promised Land. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells them that they have a high priest who represents them before God, offering sacrifices for their sins. We have in Christ an eternal high priest who intercedes for us at the throne of God. In the gospel, Jesus heals a blind beggar. Bartimaeus has cried out to him, calling him the Son of David. Because he has recognized Jesus as the Messiah, not only does Jesus restore his sight, he also proclaims that it is the man s faith that has saved him. Jeremiah 31: 7-9 Hebrews 5: 1-6 Mark 10:46-52 All Saints Day and All Souls Day November 1 and 2 On All Saints Day we remember all those who have gone before us in faith, having witnessed to us the presence of God in our lives. In the Book of Revelation, St. John has a vision of the end time, when all the faithful will be gathered around the throne of God. In his First Letter, St. John tells the faithful that we do not know what we shall be like in heaven, but that when it is revealed we shall be like God and see him face to face. Matthew s gospel story of the Beatitudes promises the kingdom of heaven to those who imitate Christ s virtues on earth. Revelation 7:2-4, John 3:1-3 Matthew 5:1-12a On All Souls Day we commemorate all of our faithful departed, remembering Christ s promise to raise them up on the last day. The Book of Wisdom encourages the people, saying that the just are in the hands of God. The faithful must have hope in their own immortality by trusting in God. St. Paul writes to the Romans that "hope does not disappoint" because God s love has been given to those who believe. God proves his love for us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In the gospel Jesus tells the crowds that no one who comes to him will be rejected. Finally, the Lord says that everyone who sees the Son and believes will have eternal life and be raised on the last day. Wisdom 3:1-9 Romans 5:5-11 John 6:37-40

3 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we hear the story of Jesus and the blind beggar. The blind man, Bartimaeus, hears that Jesus is passing by and calls out, Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. The crowd tries to silence him, but Jesus calls him over and asks him what he wants. Bartimaeus says that he wants to see. Jesus replies that his faith has healed him and his sight is restored. Immediately Bartimaeus jumps up and follows him on the way. At the most basic level, the story tells of the compassion of Christ and his power to heal the sick. The other gospel accounts tell us that no one has ever healed a man born blind, so surely Jesus must come from God. In Mark s gospel, the healing stories are the Messianic Secret of Jesus. Only those who have faith will see Jesus as the Messiah. Bartimaeus, who is physically blind, is the only one who sees Jesus as he really is, identifying him as the Son of David. In Jesus time, physical illness or misfortune was seen as a sign of the lack of God s favor due to personal sin (either of the individual or of one s parents). The crowd tries to silence him because he is seen as unworthy. At times, all of us are blind to the presence of Christ. Caught up in the common sense real world, we often fail to see the presence and power of God in our lives. We often fail to trust in God s promise and then fail to follow in the ways that he has taught us. The prophet Jeremiah promises that God will deliver his people from captivity. The author of Hebrews promises that Christ intercedes on our behalf. Today s gospel calls us to examine our own discipleship, our own willingness to embrace the Paschal mystery, calling us to die to self so that we may share the glory of rising with Christ. Thank you to our friends at Graziano s Restaurant who hosted a fund-raiser for our school. A portion of all dine-in and carryout orders will be donated back to our school (no figures are available yet). Those of us who attended enjoyed good food and fellowship with friends, faculty and other parishioners. Please show your gratitude for their support by considering Graziano s when dining out in the future. As we wind up Respect Life Month, please remember the Baby Bottle Project in support of the Women s Center. Bottles can be dropped off at Sunday mass or at the rectory. Thank you for your generosity. Our New Parishioner Dinner will be held this Tuesday evening to welcome those families who have joined our parish in the last six months. I always enjoy meeting our new parishioners, and am grateful to the volunteers who make the evening a success. Halloween is this Wednesday. Originally called All Hallows Eve, it was a very scary time, when people believed that ghosts and other spirits would not only frighten the living but try to steal their souls. Historically many people were denounced as witches who cast evil spells on people. This was all superstition with no basis in fact. Today it is a holiday for children, simply for make-believe and fun. Please have a good time and stay safe. Please be careful and watch out for the children, especially when driving. All Saints Day is this Thursday, a day we remember all the saints not formally on the Church calendar, but who have been models of faith for us. The Holy Day masses will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. All Souls Day is this Friday. We will celebrate with a Holy Day Mass at 8:30 a.m. and with a Mass of Remembrance at 7 p.m., followed by hospitality in the parish hall. All are welcome, especially those who have lost a loved one during the past year. Pictures/mementos of the deceased will be displayed on a table in front of the altar and be blessed during the mass. Please see page two for more details. Domestic Violence is a terrible sin that destroys the lives of families. Since the family is the domestic church, violence against any family member is violence against God himself. Fr. Chuck Dahm, the Archdiocesan Coordinator for Domestic Violence Awareness, will be at all the masses next weekend to help us understand the nature of this terrible problem that affects one in every three families. He will also host a seminar on Monday evening, November 5, to help us discern what we can do as a parish to help bringing healing to these families. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

In a special way, we will remember our parishioners who have passed away in the last year. We invite our parish community to join us in the church as we remember our departed relatives and friends. Following the Mass, there will be a reception with coffee and...in Kernaghan Hall. Please join us. St. Robert Bellarmine Ministers of Care are dedicated volunteers who serve the hospitalized and homebound of our parish. If you have a family member or neighbor who is homebound and wishes to receive communion from a Minister of Care, please call the rectory at A Prayer of Remembrance - We Remember Them In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them. In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them. In the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them. In the blueness of the skies and the warmth of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the fall, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have achievements that are based on theirs, we remember them. When we have joys that we yearn to share, we remember them. The Weekend of November 3 / 4 Our Girl Scouts will be holding a Bake Sale in Kernaghan Hall after all masses. All proceeds will go to the STRETCH Fund. If you would like to bake items for the sale, please drop them off at the rectory either Friday, November 2 between 2p - 4:30p or Saturday, November 3 between 9a - 12p or to Kernaghan Hall from 3p to 5p. You can also bring your baked goods to Kernaghan Hall before any Mass. Come and Support the Girls! The Mass Intention Book for 2019 is open. Please stop by the parish office to schedule a mass. Please note the following: No mass intentions are taken for Holy Days or Holidays. In order to give all parishioners the opportunity to schedule a mass for their loved ones, we ask that each family use the following guidelines to schedule masses. 8 Page 8 October 28, 2018 Buckets of thanks to our SRB Parish and school for their generous donations to the victims of the hurricanes in Florida and the Carolinas. In spite of a very short time frame, we were able to donate over 25 buckets of cleaning supplies in support of relief efforts and... on top of the 25 buckets we filled, an additional 12 boxes of supplies were delivered to the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels in West Humboldt Park
