II Charlie Rogowski and Anna Kusak Our Sympathy and Prayers for all who have passed away. We pray for our recently deceased Janet Palmissano Glen W. Donat Andrea Puig SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER In the reading from Acts many signs and wonders are done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They brought the sick on their mats so that Peter s shadow might fall upon them and heal them; and those with unclean spirits were cured. In his Revelation St. John is caught up in the Spirit and beholds the majesty of the Son of Man. He falls down as if dead. The Lord says, Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I hold the keys of death and the netherworld. In the gospel the Risen Lord passes through the locked door to the upper room and stands in the midst of his disciples. He says, Peace be with you ; and shows them his hands and his side. He breathes upon them and gives them the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who had been absent, does not believe that the Lord had risen. Jesus returns a week later and repeats his message of peace. He then turns to Thomas, inviting him to touch his hand, his side, and to believe. Thomas replies, My Lord and my God. We are told that these signs have been written down so that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that through this belief we might have life in his name. Acts 5:12-16 Revelation 1:9-13, John 20:19-31 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Our Christian faith really is all about mercy: the mercy of God and the mercy that we are to extend to others. The Easter Triduum that we have just celebrated is the ultimate expression of God s mercy. Jesus takes our sins upon himself and nails them to the cross. Through his Resurrection we have access to eternal life with him in his kingdom. In baptism we die to sin and rise to new life. At the elevation of the host during the Eucharistic Prayer we affirm our faith: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. Every time we receive communion we are participating in the paschal mystery and partaking of the true bread of life. So every Sunday is a celebration of divine mercy. Based on a revelation to Sr. Faustina, a Polish nun who died in 1938, Pope John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Sr. Faustina calls us to pray for divine mercy, to come to know divine mercy and to bring divine mercy to others. Sr. Faustina was canonized (proclaimed a saint) on April 30, 2000.
3 2nd Sunday of Easter Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today, the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday (see page two), we hear the gospel that gives us the expression Doubting Thomas because of the apostle s declaration that he won t believe unless he actually sees the nail marks on Jesus hands and puts his hand into Jesus side. Jesus calls Thomas to believe in the evidence of things not seen. The empty tomb without the eyes of faith is just an empty tomb. We are called to believe without having seen the risen Christ ourselves. We depend on the witness of the apostles and the early Church. We all have doubts. If we never have doubts, it is unlikely that we have really appropriated the faith in any deep personal way. True faith is not whether we doubt but what we do with our doubts. St. Thomas witness to the risen Christ confirmed his faith. John concludes the gospel passage with the explanation that the signs performed by the risen Christ are written down so that we may come to believe, and through this belief that we may have life in his name. John also tells us that the Risen Christ is testified to by the water, the blood and the Spirit. The water from Jesus side is the water of baptism; the blood shed on the Cross is the blood of the new and everlasting covenant, and the Spirit is the Spirit of truth. We have all these witnesses. Though our faith is often learned first from family or teachers, we each must make a decision as to whether or not we will believe. John tells us that if we do believe we will conquer the world as Jesus himself did. He goes on to tell us that the proof of our faith is in our obedience to his commandments. Faith comes down to the willingness to unite ourselves to Christ by our trust. We can give in to our doubts in order to conform to life in this world. We can also choose to live and act on God s Word, trusting in his promise. Only when we overcome our doubts and fears can the promises of faith be realized in our lives. I would like to thank all the volunteers and staff who spent so much time during the Holy Week to prepare our beautiful liturgies. These events don t just happen. It takes a lot of time and effort from a lot of people. Special thanks go to Grace Pinas, Celeste Burke, Veronica Lisowski and the Art and Environment committee for decorating the church so beautifully; Jean Tuohy and all the musicians, cantors and choirs; Pat Zyburt for working with all the lectors and running the rehearsals for Holy Thursday; Sheelagh Spooner for rehearsing and coordinating the altar servers; all of our lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, altar servers; Chrissy Zaker for coordinating the RCIA Elect as they prepared for the Easter Vigil. A special thanks goes to Mariellen Cronin for typing all the liturgies and preparing the liturgical books. I apologize for any names I may have forgotten. Bless you all for your devotion to our parish. Veronica Lisowski retired at the end of March after twenty years of exceptional service to the parish. Veronica not only cleaned the parish buildings, washed and ironed all the altar linens, watered the plants and the grass and helped decorate the church, she was always willing to help out when anything needed to be done and thinking ahead to make sure we had the altar supplies we needed for upcoming events. She would often come back late in the evenings and on weekends to clean up after events so that the place would be clean and neat for the next day. On behalf of us all, I want to express my deep gratitude for her hard work and devotion to our parish and to wish her God s blessings in her retirement. She will be missed and I m sure some things will slip through the cracks as we move forward. Today at 10 a.m. we will celebrate a special First Communion Mass for those in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) Program. We welcome to the table of the Lord for the first time: Miguel Cave, Andrea Cervantes, Daniel Feller, Justin Feller, Noel Feller, Jessica Keathley, Nick Keathley and Miguel Tuba. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. This Friday, April 12, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Rassas for forty-three of our young people in the school and religious education programs. Please keep our Confirmandi and their families in your prayers. I am happy to report that our parish collected just over $8,000 to support the new Technical Institute for the Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti. These funds will be matched dollar for dollar by the McKenna Foundation here in Chicago. I am deeply grateful for your generosity and support. On behalf of the children, we say Merci beaucoup. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
