That resulted in an average donation each week of $8,069. Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck Solemnity of Christ the King Ezekiel tells us that the Lord God will rescue his people from every scattered place and give them rest. The lost will be sought out and those who have strayed will be brought back. The injured and sick will be healed. St. Paul writes to a divided Corinthian community, which seems to have strayed from the faith. He tells them that Christ, risen from the dead, will come back to reign in glory and will subject everything to himself. He will destroy death and those who belong to him will be brought to eternal life. In the gospel reading Jesus says that when he comes back in glory all the nations will be assembled before him and they will be separated, the good from the bad. Those who have taken care of the hungry and the suffering will inherit the kingdom. Those who denied help to the needy will be cursed and cast into the fire of eternal punishment. Ezekiel 34:11-12, Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 Matthew 25: Thanksgiving Day On Thursday our nation celebrates Thanksgiving Day in gratitude for the abundant gifts with which our nation has been blessed. As our first countrymen and women thanked God and invited guests to celebrate and give thanks with them, so we do today. All are asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be presented with the gifts during the Thanksgiving Day mass. These items will be donated to a local food pantry. Our collection on Thanksgiving Day will fund our STRETCH Program supporting the needy in our community. Our mass will be at 9 a.m. In the first reading King Solomon blesses all the people in a great assembly as they give thanks to God for bringing them peace. He enjoins the people to obey all the Lord s commandments so that the nation may continue to prosper. In the second reading St. Paul gives thanks to God for the grace of Christ that the people have received and for the faith that promises salvation. In the gospel Mary, having conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit, goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth. It is here that she proclaims her Magnificat, giving thanks to God for all the favors she has received and the gifts that he bestows upon his people. 1 Kings 8: Corinthians 1:3-9 Luke 1:39-55

3 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk The celebration of the Feast of Christ the King marks the end of the Church s liturgical year. Our scriptures tell us about the Second Coming, when Christ returns in glory. This celebration announces the end of time. When Christ returns, the world will end. The reflection on last things gives us a horizon or background against which to evaluate our lives. Whether God calls us home in death or Christ comes back first, we will all have to make an accounting to God. How have we lived, what have we done with the time we had on this earth, how have we treated one another? How do we measure up to the values we profess? In today s gospel Jesus tells us that those who will inherit the kingdom of God are those who have recognized him in the least of our brothers and sisters. Jesus speaks directly about helping the poor, the sick and the stranger. Last week we were told that we are to be good stewards of the talents that we have been given. Today Christ reminds us that the gifts we have been given are to be used to help one another. This is how God will measure us when he calls us home. One of the biggest gifts we can give back to God is to treat the least among us with the dignity we would give to Christ himself, to recognize in them the divine image in which they, too, were created. It is often very hard to see Christ in the faces of those we dislike or those who are different. I sometimes have difficulty seeing Christ in many people, not only in the violent, the criminal, and the panhandlers; but also the unkind, the selfish, the rude and those people who have treated me unjustly. But the gospel helps me to shift my vision and pray for the courage to try to be the compassion of Christ for them, even when I don t feel like it and even though I don t always succeed. Thank you to the Girl Scouts for hosting the Bake Sale last weekend. In addition to having such wonderful goodies, they raised $1,250 for the STRETCH Fund to help the needy in our parish. There will be a second collection today for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to support local organizations that work to help lift people out of poverty. Thank you for your generosity. Thursday our nation celebrates Thanksgiving Day. In spite of the trouble and uncertainty in our world today, we do have many reasons to be thankful. Thanksgiving is a time for remembering that the people we love are the most important gifts in our lives. There will be a special School Thanksgiving Mass this Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. Our Thanksgiving Day Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 9 a.m. We are collecting non-perishable items for the food pantry at the back of church this month. I know that some of you are experiencing personal hardship as well as the loss of loved ones. Your pain is very real. Many are lonely, especially at this time of year. I pray that God will send you his peace and consolation. I pray that you will find hope beyond your pain and recognize the healing touch of God s love in the compassion of others. May we who are more fortunate recognize the blessings in our own lives and reach out to share some of our time with those who find little to be thankful for this season. The folks from Blest Art will be here next weekend to sell religious goods made from olive wood from Jerusalem. Proceeds will benefit Christians living in the Holy Land. These beautiful items make great gifts in all price ranges. Advent begins next Sunday. It is a time of transition from expecting Christ s coming back at the end of time to awaiting his coming at Christmas. Christ becomes a member of our human family so that we may become members of his divine family. As we prepare for the holidays, don t rush into Christmas. I invite all of you to take time to participate in the season of Advent. It is a time of joyful expectation that has great spiritual rewards and consolations. Please see page four for the schedule of our Advent services that will help us to slow down to be with the Lord in the midst of the hectic pace that the holidays often bring. May this Thanksgiving be a time of joy shared with family and friends; may you be blessed by those you love; may the peace of the Lord be in your hearts and homes. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Welcome and Farewell On Tuesday we officially welcomed Archbishop Blase Cupich to Chicago as our new pastor with an installation mass at Holy Name Cathedral presided over by Cardinal Francis George. The priests had an opportunity to celebrate a prayer service with him on Monday night. It is a great blessing to have a new Archbishop, particularly one with Archbishop Cupich s pastoral outreach and compassion. I look forward to working with him. The presbyterate welcomes him with great joy as we look to the future. At the same time, I am very grateful for Cardinal George s leadership for the past seventeen years. He, too, is a man of great compassion. Often overlooked by the media has been his concern for the poor, the immigrants and the marginalized as well as his passionate opposition to racism. There is so much to admire about the Cardinal: his deep love of the Archdiocese, shown especially in his tireless work schedule, his desire to fulfill his responsibilities regardless of his own health. Like the late Saint John Paul II, he took his duties as a shepherd seriously, working long past normal retirement age (he will be 78 in January) at a pace unmatched by much younger people. One of the things that I admire most about Cardinal is that he visited the parishes as often as he could and stayed to greet everyone no matter how long it took. He will be missed. I wish him a peaceful retirement, prayers for his health and God s blessings always. Fr. Neil

6 Page 6 November 23, 2014 GIVING TREE NEXT WEEKEND THE ADVENT GIVING TREE WILL BE IN THE VESTIBULE. Every Advent Season this Giving Tree reminds us as we prepare for Christmas to be mindful of those who are poor. Christ's humble birth and his message of hope for the poor are important to reflect upon throughout Advent as we prepare our hearts for Christ's Birth. If you would like to help out families in need during the Advent season there are several ways the Giving Tree could use your help. 1) On the tree you will find gift scrolls with the name of a child from our Sharing Parish - Ascension-St. Susanna in Harvey. Each person who takes one of those scrolls is asked to buy one warm item of clothing and a little toy. These gifts are to be turned in by December 16 th. 2) You can place items under the tree of warm clothing, warm bedding, and items for babies and young children such as toys or blankets. These items are distributed to members of our own parish as well as to agencies like Catholic Charities who distribute them to the needy of Chicago. 3) Another agency we support is Marillac House. They offer an opportunity for parents in need to select toys for their children. The age categories are 0-4, 5-8 and You are asked NOT to donate any weapon-like toys (Nerf, water guns, etc.) You are welcome to place unwrapped new toys under the Giving Tree for Marillac House and we will deliver them by December 12 th. Thank you in Advance for your Generosity. Blest Art will be visiting your parish on behalf of the Palestinian family carvers in Bethlehem district. Our mission is to support those families in the Holy Land. For centuries, the Christians of Bethlehem district have earned a living by carving olive wood religious art to sell it to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for Christian artisans to support their families by the dignified work of their hands in the land of Christ s birth. Because of the lack of work, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the Holy Land. They are now less than 1% of the population in the Holy Land. Since the start of its mission Blest Art has helped hundreds of struggling families. Mr. Jeryes Qumseya, through his own experience as a master carver, has worked to make it possible for Christians in the Holy Land to maintain both their livelihood and their ancestral homes in the land of our Lord. When Blest Art visits your parish we will have hand-carved Nativity sets, statues of many sizes, last suppers, crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive wood religious art. By purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land you support your brothers and sisters; whom choose to stay and protect the holy sites where Jesus himself lived. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Christian families. We gladly accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Please note that we do not ask for, nor do we accept, any donations. Thank you in advance for your purchase when we come to visit. Visit our display Saturday and Sunday, November 29th and 30th, 2014 after all masses. You can also visit our website: where you can order beautiful carvings to be shipped to your home!
