Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the first reading, the chief priest Amaziah tells Amos to flee the land of Judah because his prophesying is not welcome in the royal temple. Amos responds that he is not a prophet (one of the guild prophets that earn their living by visions and oracles of the Lord). Rather, he is a shepherd and a dresser of sycamore trees whom God has taken from his flock and commanded him to prophesy to his people Israel. In his Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul proclaims the wonderful good news of our faith. God has bestowed on us every spiritual blessing in the heavens through his Son. God chose us in him before the foundation of the world to be his adopted children. We have redemption in his blood for the forgiveness of our sins. In Mark s gospel, Jesus sends out the Apostles to the surrounding towns and villages, with the mission to preach repentance and giving them authority over unclean spirits. They proclaimed the good news, drove out demons and anointed the sick with oil and cured them. Amos 7:12-15 Ephesians 1:3-14 Mark 6:7-13 World Meeting of Families 2018 AUGUST 22 TO 26, 2018 This year, the World Meeting of Families will take place in Dublin, Ireland from August 22 to 26. With the theme of, The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World. Pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Chicago will have a full and vivacious experience that will last from August 18 through August 27, which will include a tour of Ireland s most sacred places, the three day congress, the festival of families and the closing liturgy. 3 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Our scriptures this weekend continue St. Mark s theme of listening to the Word of God. We are reminded that the Word of God can come from the most unlikely places. It takes an open mind to truly hear God s Word. It takes a heart of faith to act on that Word, especially if we don t like what we hear. In the first reading, we hear the Israelite response to the prophet Amos. Amos was one of the first of the prophets to call the leaders of the people back to the Covenant. Amos was sent by God to bring about reform. The cultic priests who ministered in the temple and the synagogues were the official clergy and interpreters of the Laws of Moses. At the same time there was a group of professional prophets who prophesied based on visions they had received. While many were probably honest interpreters of God s Word, many of them made a comfortable living telling people that what they wanted to hear was, indeed, the will of God. Amos comes with bad news, telling the people of God s impending judgment (loss of the kingdom to the neighboring Assyrians) if they did not turn back to the Covenant. Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, tells Amos to flee the kingdom of Israel and make his living elsewhere. Amos responds that he is not a prophet, but rather, a shepherd. He tells the priest that God has called him to prophesy to the people. Because Amos message was unpopular, the king and the priests ignored him; and not too many years later the northern kingdom was conquered. Obviously, there are very serious consequences for ignoring the Word of God. This is the same spiritual lesson we heard in last week s gospel. The people of Jesus home town ignored his teaching because he was one of them, so commonplace that they couldn t believe he came from God. In today s gospel, Jesus sends the Apostles out to preach repentance throughout the surrounding countryside. He gives them authority over unclean spirits and the power to cast out demons and cure the sick. He gives them the injunction to stay with those who welcome them and preach repentance. Those who accept the apostles, even though they are unlettered nobodies, will be healed. Jesus also gives them an admonition against those who do not welcome or listen to their word to shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them. We, too, have the same choice. We have to open our hearts to listen to the Holy Spirit and have confidence in God s love and grace. We hear this great Christological hymn in St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians to give us the courage and confidence we need. God chose us before the foundation of the world to be holy and destined us for adoption through Jesus Christ. We have redemption by his blood for the forgiveness of sins. We are blessed by the grace he has lavished upon us. We have heard the Word of Truth, the gospel of salvation, and have believed in him. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the first installment of our inheritance. This is truly the source of our faith and the vision for our lives. Pope Francis has announced the acceptance of the retirements of Bishops George Rasses and Francis Kane (Vicariates I and II, respectively) and has named three new Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago: Bishops-Elect Fr. Mark Bartosic, Fr. Robert Casey and Fr. Ron Hicks. All three of our new bishops were ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 1994 by Cardinal Bernardin. Fr. Bartosic is currently the pastor of Assumption BVM parish and Director of Kolbe House Jail ministry. Fr. Casey is currently the pastor of St. Bede the Venerable parish and serves on the Archdiocesan Priests Placement Board. They both will retain these duties until their successors are appointed. Fr. Hicks is currently serving as, and will remain, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese. I know all three of these men from our seminary days. They are fine priests and will continue to dedicate their lives in service to our people. I wish them God s blessings and ask you to keep them in your prayers. 6 Page 6 July 15, 2018 As you may recall, we included a new organ as part of our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, in order to prepare for the eventual failure of our current organ. I am happy to announce we have selected a new Allen organ for the church and to announce this floor model was made available at a very generous discount from what a new organ might cost. Perhaps you recall the phrase, When the Lord closes a door, he opens a window. I believe this has recently happened here at SRB. If you recall, the church organ recently malfunctioned and disrupted the Sunday 8 AM Mass. Ryan, the technician came out to service the instrument and said that the speakers needed to be replaced (an estimated cost of $13,000) and that his dealer is selling a floor model organ which could be an option for our parish. We would not have known about the floor model s sale had we not had Ryan come to service our instrument. We anticipate the new organ to be installed in about six weeks time. Keep your ears tuned in church.
