They have been chosen from all the nations and rescued during times of trouble. Moses tells the people to fix in their hearts that the Lord is God and that there is no other. He tells them that they must obey God s statutes and commandments so that they, and their children after them, may prosper. In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul describes those who are led by the Spirit as children of God. As heirs with Christ, we must suffer with him before we can be glorified with him. Today s Gospel reading comes from the end of Matthew s Gospel, as Jesus prepares to ascend to heaven. He gives his disciples the Great Commission to Go, and make disciples of all nations. He commands them to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Although the reality of the Triune God is not elaborated further by Jesus, it is clearly spoken of by him. We are comforted by our Lord s final words: I am with you always, until the end of the age. Deuteronomy 4: 32-34, Romans 8: Matthew 28: Memorial Day Our country will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 28th. Three years after the Civil War, an organization of Union Army Veterans established this day to honor all who died in that terrible conflict among the states. Originally called Decoration Day, it was a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Major General John Logan established Decoration Day on May 30, probably chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first major celebration was held at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. It was not until after World War I that the commemoration was expanded to include those who died in all American wars. Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in We remember all those who gave their lives in service to our nation, as well as their families who mourn them. We pray for them, for all our veterans, our active military personnel and for their families. The mass will be offered for all those who have died in service to our nation and there will be a special blessing for all veterans and military personnel. Numbers 6:22-27 Matthew 5:1-12a

3 The Most Holy Trinity Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the unfathomable mystery of God s own divine nature. St. John tells us that God is love. Not merely that God loves us or shows us how to love or invites us to share that love. These all derive from the fact that God IS love. The essence of love is that it is shared. God is not some lonely divinity far away in the distant heavens. God is relational. God reveals to us the relational nature of love in the mystery of the Trinity. The Father is the lover, the Son is the beloved and the Holy Spirit is the bond of that love. Yet all three are one in the essence of divine love. This inner relational nature is dynamic and vibrant. In the selfhood of God this pure energy, this force of love, is beyond our imagining. Like a powerful river that continually overflows its banks, the love that is God cannot be limited within itself. St. Thomas Aquinas says that this love is diffusive of itself. The inner love among the Trinity cannot by its very nature be self-contained. Out of God s inner self, creation happened. Out of this relationship, life happens. God chose to reveal His love to us through the Holy Spirit. We see this in the beauty of our world and in the order of the universe. In the revelation of Jesus as the Christ we see the divine nature become one with our humanity. In the beginning, the Spirit moved on the waters and the world was created. God said let us make man in our own image and likeness. And so male and female he created them. God breathed his life-giving Spirit into our very being. And in the fullness of time he took on our image and likeness and was born of the Virgin Mary so that we could see the face of God. This means that Christ became human so that we could become divine. We are created to partake in the life of God. Go, therefore, and baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Go and invite them to participate in the relationship that Jesus has with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Go, invite them to be lovers, to be beloved, to be love itself. Last week we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended to form the Church. The Church, the mystical body of Christ, is the visible face of God, the visible manifestation of Jesus divinity in our humanity. Though the Church is imperfect, and we as individuals are imperfect, the love of God dwelling within us in the person of the Holy Spirit is always present to purify our life, our love and our relationship to God and to one another. The call of our baptism is to respond to the Holy Spirit to live in love. Unconditional love means unconditional forgiveness. The Cross is God s unconditional love and forgiveness for all that separates us from him and from one another. To join in this love means that we have made the decision to participate in the life of God by obeying Christ s command to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves, relying on God s grace to overcome the sinfulness in our nature that separates us from love. Concretely, we love our family and friends even though they sometimes say and do things that hurt us. Our love for them (the relationship) is more important than their acts of unkindness. Through our love and forgiveness they are encouraged to repent (change the behavior), heal their relationships, and thus grow in the image of God. God wants this for us in our relationship with him and with others. Tomorrow (Monday), our nation will celebrate Memorial Day to honor all the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Please remember all our service men and women, living and deceased, in your prayers. Our Memorial Day mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. All parish offices will be closed. Please see my commentary on page two. On Tuesday, we will celebrate the Graduation of our School 8th Grade Class. They are a wonderful group of kids and I wish them a successful high school career. Friday will be the last day of class for the rest of the school. I wish all our students a safe and happy summer. The Parents Association will host Bingo Night this Saturday. This is always a fun evening and is our last fundraiser of the year. Please support our school. Information can be found on page seven.
