Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Retired Religious Fund For many years religious congregations have staffed our schools and hospitals as well as provided much of the Church s presence in missionary dioceses as pastoral associates, catechists, ministers of care in visible witness to Christ s presence in the world. Now they need our help. The facts below highlight the great need for our support: Skyrocketing Costs There are more than 40,000 religious past age 70 living in the United States. In 2017, the average annual cost for their care was over $40,000 per person. For each of the last five years, the total cost to support women and men religious has exceeded $1 billion. Insufficient Income Second Sunday of Advent Writing during the time of exile, the prophet Baruch brings a message of hope. He tells the Israelites to rejoice, for God will bring them back in glory to the Promised Land. St. Paul tells the Philippians that he has great joy in them because they have received the gospel. He prays that their love may increase, that they may be pure and blameless, and so give glory to God. In the gospel, John the Baptist begins his public ministry, preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He tells the people to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight his paths. Baruch 5: 1-9 Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11 Luke 3: 1-6 By 2025, retired religious are projected to outnumber wage-earning religious by four to one. For most of their lives, elder religious worked for small stipends. There were no 401(k) plans or pensions. Religious communities are financially autonomous and solely responsible for the support and care of all members. Income, earnings, and expenses are managed separately from the parish and diocesan structures of the Catholic Church. The average annual Social Security benefit for a religious is $5,500 roughly one-third the amount received by the average beneficiary in the United States.

Second Sunday of Advent Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Our readings move from last week s dire warnings to the more joyful news of the coming of the Messiah to deliver his people. We are still in the prophecies of the Second Coming. The prophet Baruch tells Jerusalem to take off their robes of mourning and put on the splendor of the glory of God. Her children will be brought back from exile and borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones, for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory. St. Paul writes with joy to the Philippians, exhorting them to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. We are to rejoice in the glory of God. John the Baptist proclaims that the promise is to be fulfilled in the present time, that all flesh shall see the salvation of God. These themes will be repeated in all three scriptures next week, with John the Baptist explicitly announcing the public ministry of Jesus. Like Jeremiah in last week s reading, Baruch reminds the people to look beyond their current circumstances and to trust in the promise of God. His message is one of great hope, focusing on the glory of God. This is an implicit reminder that their ancestors actually witnessed the glory of God when they were delivered from slavery in Egypt. God was truly present to them in the pillar of fire, on the mountain speaking to Moses and the assembly, and in the cloud of smoke and fire over the tabernacle of the Ark of the Covenant. This was the defining moment in the history of the people of Israel. Baruch reminds them that what God has done before he will do again. Jerusalem will once again live in the glory of God. The scripture is a good reminder to us as well to look beyond the current circumstances of our lives and to remember that God will not abandon us. John comes preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, exhorting the people to prepare the way of the Lord. The Baptist is quoting from Second Isaiah, also an exhortation to the people in exile, promising God s deliverance (all shall see the salvation of God). In Advent we are called to prepare the way of the Lord by opening our hearts to receive the Christ. We remember the coming of Christ to deliver us from the captivity of sin and his promise to fill us with his glory forever. The joy we feel leads us to unclutter our lives to make room for his coming. Sin separates us from God. Advent repentance is opening our hearts to experience the presence of God. St. Paul prays that our love may increase in knowledge to discern what is of value, so that we may be filled with the fruit of righteousness. It is only when we seek God s grace that we can experience the glory of God. Yesterday (Saturday) we celebrated the Sacrament of First Reconciliation with forty-six children. It was a wonderful experience of the Lord s healing presence and power in our lives. Thank you to Mary Ellen Casselman and all the Religious Education team for all their efforts. The Parish Advent Reconciliation Service will be held on Tuesday, December 19th in the church at 7 p.m. Please don t miss this special time of grace. The Parents Association Breakfast with Santa will be held until 12:30 today in Kernaghan Hall. Please join us for some good food and fellowship. Additional information can be found on page six. There will be a second collection today for the Retired Religious Fund for the needs of those religious sisters and brothers who have served us faithfully for so many years, dedicating their lives in the service of God s people in our schools, hospitals, parishes and social service apostolates, caring for our families. Now they need our help. Please see the article on page two and be generous in your support. Our second Advent Evening of Reflection with Sr. Mary McNulty will be held this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the church. The theme of her talk is The Good News of Great Joy. A reminder to all Altar Servers and their families that Deacon Bill will host the Tree Trimming Party this Friday at 7 pm. Children s Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated next Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. We are still looking for volunteers to help supervise the children so that we can hold this more than once a month. Please contact Jane Hearrin at the rectory to volunteer. There will be a second collection next weekend to help with the cost of Christmas Flowers. Envelopes are in your packets. Volunteers needed to decorate the church for Christmas on Friday, December 21st at noon (after school lets out). Please contact Deacon Bill if you can give us a couple hours at that time. Have a blessed Advent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
