Thank you for your generosity! Please pray for our sick Gina Brettman, Patricia Klenck, Robert Walsh, Margaret Ludden Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine St. Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 and became one of the great teachers of the Catholic faith. In a time of great turmoil (the Reformation), St. Robert systematized Church teachings against the attacks of the Reformers. His greatest work, Disputations on the Controversies, set forth Christian doctrine in a clear and compelling way. A life-long scholar of the Scriptures and the early Fathers of the Church, his writings helped explain not only the content of our faith, but that Jesus as a living person is the source of revelation. Our faith is not merely a set of doctrines, but the person of Christ living in the Church today. He wrote two important catechisms on the faith. He was appointed the personal theologian to Pope Clement VIII who elevated him to the office of Cardinal based on his great learning. St. Robert Bellarmine remained a Jesuit priest at heart, living a life of austerity and generosity to the poor. He died on September 17, 1621, was canonized in 1930 and was named Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1931. (Adapted from Saint of the Day, edited by Leonard Foley, O.F.M.). Because our parish was founded in 1930, it was decided to dedicate our parish to this newly canonized saint. In the development of religious education, St. Robert was the first Church leader to recognize that children are different from adults. He said that, if we are going to teach our children, we have to teach them as children, not simply as little adults. He believed in "age appropriate" learning, a model we take for granted today but was revolutionary in his time. Sirach praises the wisdom of those who seek to know the counsel of the Lord and meditate on his mysteries. When a prophet glories in the law of the Lord s Covenant, people will praise him and his renown will not cease. St. Paul advises Timothy to take the teaching he has received and teach it to others. Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. He instructs them to shine before the world so that others will see their acts of goodness and give praise to God. Sirach 39:6-11 2 Timothy 1:13-14, 2:1-3 Matthew 5:13-16

Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine Page 3 From the Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate the feast of our patron, St. Robert Bellarmine. His gift to us is his love for Scriptures and for the Church. His teachings remind us that the person of Jesus Christ is the source of our faith and the revelation of God. The doctrines of the faith are revealed truths that lead us to the Truth, Jesus himself. St. Robert saw the Church both as the institution that nurtured the faith of the apostles and as the manifestation of the living Christ. The scripture readings for the Feast of St. Robert Bellarmine call us to be like the wise who seek the Wisdom of God for their lives. The gospel calls us to let that light shine as a beacon of God s kingdom. Sirach promises that those who value God s ways will receive the Spirit of Wisdom (God himself) and will never be forgotten. As we remember St. Robert, let us imitate his search for wisdom and holiness in our own lives. We also celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of the new church. It is a good time to reflect on the meaning of parish and what it means to be a community of faith. The church is not simply a place but the focal point of our spiritual lives. Catholics often speak of going to church or mass. It is actually more fitting to speak of gathering with the church. The difference is not one of semantics, but a whole different way of viewing the world. When church is a place we go to, it can become simply one more thing we do, another activity in our busy lives. But when church is the community with which we gather to be with the Lord, then church becomes what God means it to be, the center of our lives where we are nourished together, and where we share the blessings of faith, community and sacrament. It is not simply what we do but who we are. Mass is family time. Just as the Sabbath is a gift from God as a day of rest and time to share with our families, so, too, the celebration of the mass is a gift from God. This is also family time. We gather as God s family to rest in the Lord and to share in the celebration of all God s gifts. Through our presence at Church, the whole community is a gift to one another. Being together allows us to live in, and share, the blessings of being God s people. Together we become the living body of Christ. By realizing that we don t just "go" to church, but we gather "with" the church, we understand that through this celebration we are nourished and sustained, and better able to move back into our busy lives and bring God s message of love to the world around us. Today we also celebrate Catechetical Sunday. There will be a special commissioning of the Catechists and Volunteers at the 10 a.m. mass. There will also be a blessing for catechists, volunteers and families of the children in our faith formation programs at all masses. There is no greater mission in the Church than to share our faith and pass it on to the next generation. St. Robert Bellarmine is both our parish patron and the Patron Saint of Catechists, so it is very fitting that these two celebrations come together at the same time every year. We will also celebrate Children s Liturgy of the Word at the 10 a.m. mass today. Deacon Bill will be hosting a Ministry Fair with Coffee and Donuts after all the Sunday masses. Please see page six for details. Thank you to James Ouper and all the volunteers for hosting a very successful Flea Market last Sunday. Due to all their hard work and your participation, we raised $2,000 to help meet the operating needs of the parish. Next week we will celebrate Seminary Sunday when we pray for seminarians and support their vocations. Mr. Kenneth Clem from the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas will be with us to share his vocation story. There will be a second collection at all the masses to support our seminaries. The School Run-A-Thon will be held in two weeks, on Friday September 29th, in the parking lots. This is a major fundraiser for the school. I urge everyone to make a donation to support our school. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Share your faith and talents Meet other SRB parishioners Practice good stewardship Children s Liturgy of The Word 10:00 am Mass This program is for our younger members, ages 3-8 yrs. Children are dismissed from the 10:00 am Mass to pray the Liturgy of the word on a level that they can understand. They return to the assembly at the Presentation of the Gifts. We are in need of generous, trained (Virtus) leaders for this rewarding ministry. For a list of upcoming dates, go to the Virtus website www.virtusonline.org. Great opportunity for adults, middle school, and high school youth to help these eager youngsters learn the Word of God. It requires a small amount of time in preparation and the willingness to lead or be co-leader. Usually, this program is the 3 rd Sunday of each month. We would love to run this program every Sunday so that parents may have a chance to attend mass and focus on hearing the word. For more information please contact Jane Hearrin at bmer_mom@sbcglobal.net or stop by the Ministry Fair table after all morning masses Sunday, September 17, 2017.
