2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home Does your household expect sinners or saints? That is, is your household marked by the same graciousness towards sinners that God displays towards His people? Is there room for saying I m sorry and Forget it; I forgive you? God grants the forgiveness proclaimed in the Church so that it may shape all our days, and free us to repent and forgive as we ve been forgiven. Worship Notes Holy Communion is proclamation: this simple point helps clarify what happens at the altar. By attaching His promise to bread and wine, and thus also His body and blood, Jesus is preaching to you at the altar, promising that everything He did in His flesh was done for you. Through His body, He gives the benefit! Next Sunday: Pentecost 14: Ezekiel 33:7-9; Romans 13:1-10; Matthew 18:1-20; Psalm 32:1-8 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM: Learning from What We Sing In the final weeks of August and the first week of September, this study will apply what we learned from the study, Why Lutherans Sing What They Sing by looking at a few of our best hymns and learning what they proclaim and teach to us. On September 10, we will begin a study on the Book of Romans. Tuesdays at 9 AM: Hebrews Following the death and resurrection of Jesus, all things in the Old Testament take on a new light, teaching us to see all of our life in the light of Jesus and His grace. (Church Hall). Continuing at Hebrews 12:3. Thursday Men s Breakfast: Matthew Most of our gospel readings this year will come from the gospel according to Matthew. The tax collector called by Christ, Matthew writes a gospel that some have called a catechism of the Christian life. He tells us the story of Jesus in a way that teaches how the followers of Jesus live by Jesus life alone. Come and let Matthew renew your own living of the Life. Continuing at Matthew 9:18.

3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in September Saint Gregory the Great September 3 St. Gregory is remembered for many things, chiefly for serving as bishop of Rome from 590 until his death. He was also instrumental in writing on pastoral care and liturgy, and he organized missions to northern Europe. Prior to his church service, Gregory was a nobleman in Rome who served as that city s mayor and helped it recover from both plague and barbarian invasions. He sold much of his property for the health and care of the poor. Saint Moses September 4 Holy Moses was born to a Hebrew family when that nation was enslaved to the Egyptians. Hidden by his sister, Moses was found by Pharoah s daughter and raised as a prince until he murdered an Egyptian as the age of 40. He fled to the wilderness, but was called by God to return to Egypt to liberate the Hebrews and lead them to the promised land, a call that Moses fulfilled (though he could not enter the land on account of his own disobedience). Most of his story is recorded in the book of Exodus Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Bible Translators, The Derricks Goal $2,000 Did you know there are over 7,000 languages spoken throughout the world? Less than 1,300 languages have a New Testament Bible translation and less than 550 of those languages have a translation of the whole Bible. This leaves 180 million people without any Scriptures in their mother tongue, the language that connects most deeply to their hearts and is the easiest to understand. LBT currently has 63 missionaries dedicated to some aspect of Bible translation, working in 20 translation projects, 60 Scripture engagement programs, and four language development programs. The Derricks will be visiting our congregation on Sunday, September 17. Come and hear their presentation, and enjoy a pie and ice cream social between the services. Lutheran Seminarian, Joe Pinzl Goal $1,000 All funds given for Vicar Joe will be used to help pay for his seminary and book expenses. Becoming a pastor requires four years beyond college, and the cost for long-distance learning at Luther Seminary is about $16,200 per year.
