2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Midweek Lent: Repent and Believe Wednesdays + 10:30 and 6:30 This Week: The Who and How of Repentance At Home The fast of Lent includes more than giving up food or bad habits. It also includes giving up grudges and false hopes. What resentment may you ask God to bury this Lent? What hope or desire would you do well to forget? Here is the harder, but more blessed, work of repentance and renewal in the Holy Spirit. Worship Notes The worship of Lent mimics the fast of Lent. First, we give up the Alleluia and the Gloria (Hymn of Praise). As Lent progresses, images are veiled (Palm Sunday) and we give up the Gloria Patri ( Glory to the Father and to the Son.... ). Eventually the altar itself is stripped and laid bare. Thus the Church symbolizes its union with Christ the crucified, who was beaten and stripped for us. Next Sunday: Lent 3: Exodus 17:1-7; Romans 5:1-8; John 4:5-26; Psalm 95:1-9 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM: The Passion Sunday mornings in Lent will look at each of the four different presentations of Christ s suffering and death in Holy Scripture (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) as well as later comments about His death by St. Paul and the other apostles. This week: The Arrest of Jesus Tuesdays at 9 AM: Why the Law? Why did God give His law to the people of Israel? Does it still have a role in the life of the Church today? Come and discover the strange liveliness of the law, which St. Paul called a shadow of the good things now given in Jesus Christ. (Church Hall). Continuing at Leviticus 19:1. Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: The Book of Daniel Visions, prophecy, a fiery furnace, lions, the archangel Michael, resurrection it all shows up in this prophetic book about a time when God s people lived as exiles in Babylon. Begin Advent and a new church year by starting a new Bible study and learning about God s dazzling works for a people dwelling in darkness and sorrow. Continuing in Daniel 12:1.
3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in March Saint Patrick March 17 People often associate this saint with Ireland, but he was born to a Christian family in Britain and first taken to Ireland as a slave, captured by Irish raiders, when he was a teenager. He later escaped, traveled to France, and entered the Christian ministry, whereupon he returned to Ireland as a bishop-missionary to spread the Gospel and build up the Church. He is renowned for defending the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Saint Joseph March 19 A carpenter from Nazareth, St. Joseph was engaged to the Blessed Virgin Mary when she became pregnant with Christ. Though he initially thought to end their engagement, St. Joseph ultimately obeyed God s call to protect and care for Mary and her Child as his own (Matthew 1:18-25). He is also the father of St. James the Just, who served as the first bishop of Jerusalem, and St. Jude (Mark 6:3). Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Bible Translators: The Derricks Family Goal $2000 Lutheran Campus Center, Madison Goal $1000 Lutheran Bible Translators: The Derricks Family Elliot and Serena Derricks joined LBT in March of After completing service with LCMS International in South Korea, they as missionaries began their pre-field training in July. Being a missionary with LBT is something that a person dedicates their life s work to do. They wanted to make sure that they are prepared, and truly felt God was leading them to serve. Lutheran Campus Ministry, Madison Students worship, socialize, eat and study together. They participate in events: volunteering, lock-ins, Wednesday evening soup suppers (taking runs providing). Students serve on Social Concerns Committee and lead worship services and Bible studies. There is a quiet library always full of young people. LCC is a safe haven where faith is emphasized and energized and definitely needed! The Church future lay leaders and future parents stem from these students.
4 SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ A Lenten Devotional Plan for You! Hymns are a valuable resource for prayer and meditation. During the season of Lent, a list is available for you in which you could read, pray, and/or sing 40 hymns as part of your personal devotion. This list is located in the rack by the 6th Street entrance, next to the sermon rack. Also included in this list are Scripture Readings for the Sundays in Lent. Maundy Thursday Men s Breakfast Zion s Annual Men s Breakfast will be held on Maundy Thursday, April 13, at 6:30 a.m. in the church hall. The speaker will be Pr. Dennis Nelson, Lutheran pastor, world traveler, and executive director of Lutheran Coalition for Renewal. He will speak on How to Live through a Very Bad Day, using the Seven Words from the Cross spoken by Jesus to provide insight into how Christians bear difficult times of life. Tickets will be on sale Lenten Midweek Theme: Repent and Believe How sorry do you have to be for God to forgive you? Is repentance a one-time event? How sincere do you have to be? Must your whole life change for it to be real repentance? Listening to Holy Scripture on repentance busts the myths that surround this life-giving, daily practice of the Christian, worked for us on the cross of Jesus Christ. Each Wednesday staring with Ash Wednesday, March 1. Lenten Midweek Class at Zion: God Heard Their Cry ~ A Journey through the Exodus This class, based on Exodus 1-15, takes the participant through Israel s deliverance from slavery in Egypt and applies it to you and your experience today. It involves a series of short video presentations by Ray Vander Laan, a Biblical scholar and historian, sponsored by Focus on the Family. Class will include both the video presentation and discussion, led by Pastor Thomas Reiff. Pr. Reiff, friend and mentor of Pr. Gjerde, is a retired Lutheran pastor who will begin assisting our pastoral staff with work at Zion as we look for a new associate pastor. Held Wednesdays in Lent at noon, in the church hall (no class March 29). Please call the church office to register your interest in the class.
