2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day and refresh our souls at midweek. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the night and the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever. Try using this simple verse from the psalms at the conclusion of each meal. Lutherans have done so for centuries, and it is a fitting way to pause in gratitude and thanksgiving before returning to your daily labors. Worship Notes When we sing a hymn, do you check who wrote its text and tune? Each hymn has its composers listed at the bottom of the page. Note them each time we sing, learn a little more about what the church s hymnody, and pause to give thanks for God s poets, songwriters, and musical composers. Next Sunday: Pentecost 17: Ezekiel 34:11-24; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10; Psalm 119: LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM Christ in the Old Testament Jesus Christ was born about 2000 years ago but He did not begin to exist then. God the Son, He has existed eternally with the Father from before creation. Therefore, the whole of Scripture speaks about Him, including the Old Testament, which records events before He was born. It s like being sleuths, discovering Jesus in texts where others may miss Him! Tuesdays at 9 AM: Ephesians St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians is a sometimes controversial book, written in stunning language, that explores the union of the Church with Christ and its ministry as well as marriage, family, and relationships within the congregation. Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: Genesis The word genesis means beginnings, and this book of the Bible tells us about the beginnings of more than just creation: the beginning of sin, the beginning of salvation, and the beginning of Abraham s family, the nation of Israel. As we learn our beginnings, we learn who we are and who we shall be in the light of Christ. Continuing at Genesis 33:12.

3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in September Saint Gregory the Great September 3 St. Gregory is remembered for many things, chiefly for serving as bishop of Rome from 590 until his death. He was also instrumental in writing on pastoral care and liturgy, and he organized missions to northern Europe. Prior to his church service, Gregory was a nobleman in Rome who served as that city s mayor and helped it recover from both plague and barbarian invasions. He sold much of his property for the health and care of the poor. Saint Moses September 4 Holy Moses was born to a Hebrew family when that nation was enslaved to the Egyptians. Hidden by his sister, Moses was found by Pharoah s daughter and raised as a prince until he murdered an Egyptian as the age of 40. He fled to the wilderness, but was called by God to return to Egypt to liberate the Hebrews and lead them to the promised land, a call that Moses fulfilled (though he could not enter the land on account of his own disobedience). Most of his story is recorded in the book of Exodus Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Bible Translators Goal $2,000 It is with strongly mixed feelings that the Plugers have returned to the States Chris received and accepted a Divine Call to be Spanish instructor at Great Plains Lutheran High School in Watertown, South Dakota. They were in Zambia until mid-july and are sad to be leaving. They made many friends and will miss them. They completed the new testament and the Nsenga Committee and Bible Society of Zambia are working to complete the full Bible. A Launch and Dedication Service was held last weekend of the new testament. With Sean (their son) starting high school this fall they decided it was the right time for their family to transition back to the U. S. and a new ministry. As a colleague said, You have done what you came here to do. We continue praying for them and wish them the best. The Mission Team has decided we will continue to support the Bible translations. We are in the process of looking to find someone else. We have a number of candidates. We would like someone to keep a personal contact with as we did with the Plugers. We will keep the congregation updated on our progress. Thank you for your support. The September money will be send to the Pluger project in Zambia for the work on the Old Testament.

4 Vicar Joe Pinzl, Lutheran Seminary Goal $1,000 All funds given for Vicar Joe will be used to help pay for his seminary and book expenses. We welcome Vicar Joe and his wife Samantha here at Zion! (For more information on Vicar Joe, please see Vicar Joe s introduction on page 11 in the September newsletter.) (For more information on these missions, please see the Mission Bulletin Board display down in the church hall.) SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Mark Your Calendars for Pr. Gulhaugen s last Sunday of full -time service in the ministry, Sunday, September 25. Zion will host a catered meal for him that day at 12 noon. To attend, please contact the church office by Sunday, September 18, so that the caterer will have an accurate count. Come give thanks for this servant of God s ministry in the gospel! Sermon Series: A Simple Way The Lutheran church uses Martin Luther s Small Catechism to teach the Christian faith in a simple way. Yet the catechism is more than a way of learning: it s a simple way of living! A sermon series on the six parts of the Catechism will begin this October and extend through May (with a break for Advent and Christmas). The Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Lord s Prayer, the sacraments we will listen to the catechism s simple teachings about each of these things and how they nourish and strengthen the Christian life. Church Office Closed The church office will be closed on Monday, September 5, for the Labor Day holiday. Confirmation Classes Begin With an orientation meeting on September 14 (6:30, worship; 7:00, meeting in church hall). Confirmation class is for youth in Seventh Grade or older who have worshiped at Zion for at least a year. To register your child or ask question, contact the church office. Sunday School Sunday School begins on Sunday, September 11, during the 9:00 Service. Pre- Confirmation class begins on the same day after the 9:00 Service. Sunday School music will begin on Sunday, September 18, also after the 9:00 Service. Please pray for the children, their parents, and their teachers. Quilting... Monday, September 12, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the church hall. Volunteers are welcome! If you have any materials to

5 donate, such as fabric, bed sheets, or old clothing, please put this in a bag, label it for Quilting, and bring to the church office. Quilters: Please label the items you bring to identify them as quilt tops, backs, or fillers. Each item should be 64 X 84. This project supports Lutheran World Relief. The quilts will be shipped on Saturday, October 1. Bowls in Church Kitchen There are several bowls in the church kitchen that were left from the Salad Buffet event. Please pick up your bowl! Those bowls not claimed by September 1 will be donated to the Fall Rummage Sale. Zion s Fall Rummage Sale Women of Zion s Fall Rummage Sale will be held on Saturday, September 24 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Zion s gym. Setup day is Friday, September 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Anyone may bring items to be sold on September 23 before 3:30 p.m. Your help is needed both days. Lunch will be served on Friday. Set-up begins at 9:00 a.m. Come when you can to help and leave when you must. If you have questions, call the church office. Help make this a successful sale! Strassenfest in Zion s Gym Refer to the insert page in these announcements for information on how you can volunteer to help. Each week we are highlighting a different booth from the annual Zion Strassenfest, held Saturday, Oct. 8. Boutique Handmade items including jewelry, candles, bath soaps, rag dolls and doll clothes, knit baby blankets, booties, bibs, bonnets, quilts, bags, purses, fine art, etc. These specialty items are needed: handembroidered dishtowels and antique sleds or sleighs. 6 Bread and Pie Baking on September 23 Phyllis Bliese will be baking French bread ($3 each) and whole wheat bread ($4 each), and apple, banana crème, lemon meringue, and pumpkin pies ($6 each) in Zion s church kitchen. Burden Bears A new project of the Women of Zion is Burden Bears. These small, stuffed toy bears are decorated with each bear holding a quilt and an attached poem with comforting words. These are to be given to someone who is in need of comfort. Call the church office, or stop in if you or someone you know, would like a Burden Bear. Please Note Articles for the weekly bulletin are due at the church office on Wednesdays each week. The bulletins are then printed on Thursdays to ensure that Zion s homebound members may receive the bulletins in the mail by Saturday. Also, articles for the Newsletter are due to the church office by the third Friday of each month. Zion Organ Concert Broadcast If you would like the opportunity to hear and see the fine organ concert presented by Craig Williams here at Zion last April, the program is now being aired on Wausau Area Access Channel Channel 980. IN THE COMMUNITY Events around Central Wisconsin Meals on Wheels is in Desperate Need of Volunteer Drivers There is a fairly substantial waitlist for persons to receive meals that can be eliminated by a few caring individuals. We are looking for volunteer drivers for Thursdays and Fridays, from around 10:15 a.m. 12:00p.m. Even one day a month would help greatly!
