2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day and refresh our souls at midweek. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the night and the light of Christ. (Chapel) Worship Notes Today is often called Low Sunday. It is the end of the octave of Eastertide, the eighth day of Easter. It is Low only in contrast to the High nature of our worship on Easter Day. Our worship is still festive as we continue to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord, but not quite to the extant it was on the first day of Easter. At Home The Easter season is a week of weeks. That means it is still Easter. Don t be in a hurry to shed the Easter decorations you have put up in your home. As a gentle reminder of the new life Christ s resurrection brings into the world, keep fresh flowers in a central place in your home during the rest of the Easter season. Next Sunday: Easter 3: Acts of the Apostles 9:1-22; Revelation 5:8-14; John 21:1-14; Psalm 30 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM NEW STUDIES: Resurrection in the Bible Christ in the Old Testament The Sunday morning Bible study will begin two new studies over the next several months. First, we ll look at what Scripture teaches us about the resurrection and the hope of eternal life. What doe Christians look forward to? Then we ll explore where the Old Testament points ahead to Jesus Christ in its stories and prophecies. Tuesdays at 9 AM: Acts Acts is the story of God acting through the Holy Spirit to spread the truth of the saving act of Jesus death and resurrection throughout the world. That is the story, its characters, its events, and its teaching, on which this class will focus. Beginning at Acts 10:1 Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: NEW STUDY: Genesis The word genesis means beginnings, and this book of the Bible tells us about the beginnings of more than just creation: the beginning of sin, the beginning of salvation, and the beginning of Abraham s family, the nation of Israel. As we learn our beginnings, we learn who we are and who we shall be in the light of Christ. Continuing at Genesis 3:2.
3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in April Saint Dietrich Bonhoeffer April 9 St. Dietrich was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who worked to keep the Church free of Nazi influence. As part of that work, he helped organize a seminary for training pastors, and he wrote several volumes that are now famous, including The Cost of Discipleship. He is remembered for an ardent devotion to the Word of God. A member of the German resistance, he worked to maintain contacts with the Allies, and ultimately conspired to assassinate Adolf Hitler. He was consequently imprisoned, found guilty, and hanged on April 9, his feast day. Saint Johannes Bugenhagen April 20 God worked through St. Johannes Bugenhagen to shepherd the early Lutheran church. The chief pastor at Wittenberg, Germany, he served as the father confessor and pastor to St. Martin Luther (Feb. 18). During the Reformation, he organized the Lutheran churches throughout Germany and Denmark, where he installed seven men to the office of bishop and crowned the Danish king and queen. He also helped translate the New Testament into German. Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Greater Wausau Christian Services Goal $3,750 Since 1981 (35 years ago!), Greater Wausau Christian Services has provided a pastoral presence and various programs of support to residents of our community s institutions. There are 13 churches who are members and who support GWCS. Specifically, the efforts of GWCS has centered on local nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and the county jail. In addition to the jail support and nursing homes, GWCS recently has put a greater emphasis on juvenile facilities and refurbishing the jail library. The GWCS worship program has 26 local pastors who are scheduled to lead worship services for the nursing homes on a weekly basis. Pastor Gjerde and Pastor Gulhaugen take their turns in the rotation. Residents have come to appreciate the variety of pastoral leadership types, as each week a different pastor shows up. In addition, church services are held each Sunday evening at the county jail. Twelve different pastors lead these services on a rotation basis. The service consists of singing, bible reading, a message and prayer, concluding by saying together The Lord s Prayer. Many Zion members are also
4 involved in an every-other-week ministry to women inmates of the jail. Zion has been a part of GWCS since its inception. Your special gift of support is greatly appreciated. SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Zion on TV Zion s Easter service was recorded by Wausau s public access channel (channel 980 on the TV) and will be broadcast on television in the following days after editing.
