2 WORSHIPING Encountering God in the Liturgy Lent Has Begun Trusting that God has accomplished our salvation perfectly and completely in the death of Jesus Christ, we use the weeks leading to Good Friday and Easter as a time to meditate on Christ Crucified and learn His promises anew. Lenten Preaching Series: Accursed: The Death of Jesus in Art Each Wednesday will use a different picture of Christ s death to guide our reflection. The work of both classical and contemporary artists will be used. In what surprising ways have artists led us trust in Jesus death? Feb. 17: It is no longer I who live Feb. 24: He bore our diseases Mar. 2: He reconciled all things Mar. 9: He became a curse Mar. 16: He chose foolishness Worshipers will receive a copy of the week s work of art to take home. 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM Next Sunday: Lent 2: Jeremiah 26:8-15; Philippians 3:17 4:1; Luke 13:31-35; Psalm 4 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM Holy Communion, Holy Life It s more than what we receive at the altar, and yet it s nothing more! The gift of Christ s body and blood at Holy Communion not only strengthens faith by nourishing our union with Christ and His benefits, but it also shapes our vision of life in creation. What does Holy Communion tell you about God? Serving your neighbors? Being yourself? Tuesdays at 9 AM: Acts Acts is the story of God acting through the Holy Spirit to spread the truth of the saving act of Jesus death and resurrection throughout the world. That is the story, its characters, its events, and its teaching, on which this class will focus. Beginning at Acts 2:42. Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: Galatians and Justification by Faith Holy Scripture teaches that we are saved by faith, apart from the works of the law. But why does faith save? And if doing the law doesn t save us, then why do the law? We begin exploring these questions by reading St. Paul s letter to the Galatians. Beginning at Galatians 5:13.

3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in February Sts. Philemon and Onesimus February 15 Sts. Philemon and Onesimus were early believers in Christ with a unique relationship: Onesimus was Philemon s slave. Our only knowledge of them comes from a letter that St. Paul wrote, now contained in the New Testament. There we find that Onesimus had run away from Philemon and come to Paul, but Paul was sending him back to Philemon with the admonishment that Philemon treat Onesimus as his own brother. The letter is significant for showing how Christ s radical love had begun to change society and press for the full dignity of all people. Saint Martin Luther February 18 A monk and priest, St. Martin Luther led a reformation of the Church s life through his preaching and teaching in Wittenberg, Germany. By that reformation, God enlivened the preaching of justification through faith in Christ alone and consoled the Church in the knowledge of His mercy and grace. Excommunicated by the bishop of Rome in 1521, Luther narrowly escaped death and lived another 25 years to strengthen the Church in pure doctrine and worship. Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Crossways Camping Ministries Goal $2000 The mission of Crossways Camping Ministries is to make a world of difference in the lives of people and congregations that are served. These three camps and retreat facilities in Wisconsin are owned, maintained, and operated by Crossways: Imago Dei Village (Clintonville), Pine Lake Bible Camp (Waupaca), and Waypost on Mission Lake (Hatley). The camps are open all year long, and are for youth, families, and confirmation classes. Specialty camps and retreats are also scheduled. Two-to-three-day retreats include: crafting, quilting, scrapbooking, mother/ daughter weekend, winter family weekend, and youth retreats. Your continued support in prayer and contributions will continue to help grow Crossways Camping Ministries. Hope Life Center, Wausau and Antigo Goal $1,500 Hope Life Center in Wausau has relocated to 605 S. 24th Ave., Suite 20, with a second location in Antigo. Jack Hoogendyk is the Executive Director. Hope educates, informs, empowers men and women through the gospel of Jesus Christ. These resource centers in Wausau and Antigo offer: FREE confidential

4 services; pregnancy testing; limited ultrasound for confirmation of pregnancy; client advocate support; pregnancy options; community referrals. Nearly 50 churches in Wausau, Antigo, and the surrounding areas partner with Hope Life Center in the cause for life. Operation Baby Bottle During February, please take a baby bottle home (one per household) and fill it with your loose change. Return the bottles to the Zion church office during the week of February 29. Thank you for your support for Hope Life Center. SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Women of Zion Brunch Women of Zion: a brunch is being hosted for you on Saturday, February 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the church hall. Plan to attend! The guest speaker is Joyce Heil, Coordinator of Outreach for Marywood. There is no cost for you to attend. Refer to the insert page in these announcements. If you plan on attending, please contact the church office to make your reservation. Reservation deadline is Monday, February 15. Calling All Lay Ministers: Past, Present, and Future! Or Anyone Interested in Volunteering! Greater Wausau Christian Services is in need of Lay Ministers or those that have recently graduated from Lay School Ministry, OR anyone interested in volunteering, to help with our Nursing and Elder Care Service Rotation. Days, facilities, and times that we need volunteers are: Tuesdays Mount View at 2 p.m.; Kennedy Park at 3 p.m.; Wednesdays Benedictine Manor at 9:45 a.m.; Colonial Manor at 10:45 a.m.; Wausau Manor at 2 p.m. If you are able, or know someone that is able, please contact GWCS at Quilting... Monday, February 29, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the church hall. This project supports Lutheran World Relief. Volunteers are welcome! If you have any materials to donate, such as fabric, bed sheets, or old clothing, please put this in a bag, label it for Quilting, and bring to the church office. Quilters: Please label the items you bring to identify them as quilt tops, backs, or fillers. Each item should be 64 X 84. Lenten Soup Meals at Zion: Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. This week: Beef Vegetable Soup (egg salad sandwich included in the evening meal). Free-will offering. Any remaining soup may be purchased after the meals: $3 per pint and $5 per quart. The bulletin boards at the north entrances of Zion list the dates and soups featured this year. Lenten Soup Meals Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for serving meals and cleaning up after meals served at

5 11:30 a.m. and at 5:15 p.m. in the church hall each Wednesday during Lent. You can choose the week and time you are available to help out. Call the church office if you would be willing to help. Young at Heart will meet on Wednesday, February 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the church hall to enjoy a Lenten soup lunch, and then the monthly meeting will be held. The guest speaker is Sheryl Morris, speaking on Faith in Action. Spaghetti Supper at Zion Sunday, March 13, from 4:00 6:00 p.m. in the church hall. Tickets are now available in the church office. Tickets cost: Adults: $10 (advance), $11 at the door; $5 kids age 6-12; kids age 5 and under: free. Refer to the bulletin insert for more information. We need volunteers to help with this event. IN THE COMMUNITY Events around Central Wisconsin 2015 Income Tax Preparation The AARP Foundation offers FREE income tax preparation for low-tomoderate income taxpayers, with emphasis on persons age 60+. The appointments can be made for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, now through April 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at UW Extension, 212 River Drive, Wausau. There are other locations and dates. Refer to the postings on the north entry bulletin boards at Zion for more information. Appointments required! Call weekdays between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment. Soup Supper with Steve Thursday, February 18 at 4:30 p.m. at Forest Park Village, 2901 N. 7th St., Wausau. Chef Steve Seybold will prepare three delicious soups: creamy wild rice with smoked ham; hearty lentil and sausage; and chicken dumpling. 7 Volunteer Drivers Needed for Wausau Area Mobile Meals Meals are picked up at Aspirus Hospital and delivered by volunteer drivers daily between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The meals are delivered in the Wausau area, including Rib Mountain, Schofield, Rothschild, and parts of Weston. Most routes take about 1 hour, with 6 to 10 stops. To volunteer or have questions, call Curtis Barthel, Homebound Library Service Program If you are homebound and can no longer physically get to the Marathon County Public Library locations, there is a service which makes library materials available. Participants may borrow books, DVD s, music CD s, and more. All items arrive in your mailbox, or are delivered by library volunteers or family members. You must have a valid Marathon County Public Library card. If you would like additional information, call Paula at REMINDER Zion does not cancel worship services due to inclement weather (in part, we have adopted this practice because of the weekly radio program).
