2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day and refresh our souls at midweek. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the night and the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home Sharing generous offerings with the congregation is part of our daily fight with the devil. He would have us hold onto our wealth and worry for ourselves. By sharing generously, we oppose that fear and greed, and live in the freedom of God s own self-giving. Worship Notes The offering has taken different forms in the Christian church. In some early Lutheran churches, the offering was not received during worship (so as to avoid an undue emphasis on our efforts), but placed into offering boxes set within the walls. You can find such offering boxes at Zion, too, at the front and back. Still others received the offering during the service, as we do today, to signify God s gracious gathering of all creation into the task of His service and praise. The gift of Christ s body and blood at Holy Communion not only strengthens faith by nourishing our union with Christ and His benefits, but it also shapes our vision of life in creation. What does Holy Communion tell you about God? Serving your neighbors? Being yourself? Tuesdays at 9 AM: The remarkable visions of Ezekiel call Israel to repentance and then to hope in the midst of their exile. So, too, do they call you to repentance and offer you a word of hope as Ezekiel looks forward to the coming of Christ. This study meets in the church hall. 3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in November Saint Martin of Tours November 11 The son of pagans and a native of present-day Hungary, St. Martin grew up in Lombardy (Italy). Having become Christian as a young man, he first served as a Roman soldier, but then sensed that he was called to be a soldier of Christ and entered into the Christian ministry. In time, he became bishop of Tours (in present-day France), and is remembered especially for his efforts in spreading the gospel to the rural portions of France. He was an ardent opponent of pagan religion. Saint Justinian November 14 Born to a peasant family, St. Justinian eventually became emperor of the Byzantine Empire, centered in Constantinople. Short, curly-haired, and the last Byzantine emperor to speak Latin as a first language, Justinian is remembered for his legal wisdom (his laws are still the basis for many governments) and his passionate defense of the Church s unity and the orthodox faith that Jesus is both God and man in one person. It was Justinian who commissioned the magnificent cathedral, Hagia Sophia, in Constantinople (Istanbul). Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Disaster Relief Goal $2,500 Lutheran Disaster Response Lutheran Disaster Response brings God's hope, healing and renewal to people whose lives have been disrupted by disasters in the United States and around the world. LDR collaborates with other disaster response organizations and religious entities in the US and around the world. This enables the greatest stewardship of resources and optimum impact of response. LDR is a welcome partner because they respect the perspective and strengths of other. For more information, see your November newsletter. Christian Radio, Wausau and Milladore Goal $1,000 WCLQ Radio, or 89Q, (89.5 FM) For over 20 years, their mission is to impact youth and young adults through the medium of radio, providing music that points them to Jesus Christ and that helps unbelievers searching for God. 89Q provides north-central Wisconsin with today s popular Christian music, promotes faith in Christ and wholesome moral values based on Scripture. Visit their website: WGNV Radio, 88.5 FM has been a Christian family radio station in Central Wisconsin since 1986, located in Mil-

4 ladore, midway between Stevens Point and Marshfield. They have a sister station, 94.1 FM in Antigo. Who listens to Christian family radio? Unlike TV viewers, radio listeners identify closely with their favorite station. Radio fits well into today s mobile lifestyle, and becomes a personal companion at home, at work, in the car even out jogging! It is this intimate characteristic that makes radio so appropriate for Christian ministry. Visit their website: SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Hunters Service Zion s second annual Hunters Service will take place on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. This service provides a time to worship for those who will be absent for Opening Weekend. At the service, we will pray for a good and safe hunt and reflect on the gifts of creation in Christian perspective. Please Note Articles for the weekly bulletin are due at the church office on Wednesdays each week. The bulletins are then printed on Thursdays to ensure that Zion s homebound members may receive the bulletins in the mail by Saturday. Ride Needed A female member of Zion is looking for someone to drive her to medical appointments in Stevens Point this winter. The appointments are every other month. If you can help, please call the church office. Thank you. Another Ride Needed! A female member of the Wausau community would like to begin worshipping at Zion, and needs a ride to get here. If you are interested in helping with the transportation, please call the church office ( ) for more information. CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) Demo in Church hall Zion s elders, ushers, and any interested parishioners are invited to come and learn about CPR. The demonstration will be held on Thursday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the church hall. Travis Krueger from the Wausau Fire Department will give the demonstration. Thanksgiving Food Drive Refer to the posters on the bulletin boards at Zion, listing food items you can donate now through Sunday, November 22 to benefit Wausau s Salvation Army. Bring your donations to the Zion church office, or the conference room by the church office. Membership If you are not yet a member of Zion, and would like to join, please contact one of the pastors at the church office ( ). They will assist you in connecting with Zion s fellowship and life of faith. Coram Deo Zion s devotional fellowship, Coram Deo, is a gathering of your fellow believers

5 who have committed themselves to a shared path of prayer and Scripture reading. Join the Path! For more information, contact Pr. Gjerde. Veterans Day November 11 is Veterans Day. We would like to recognize all members of Zion, known to have served our nation in uniform, to be published in a booklet. Please return the form found in your October newsletter to the church office, giving as much, or as little, information as you wish, or are able. For additional names, including former members, and ancestors who were Zion members in uniform, even in the old country, put whatever information you can on a separate sheet of paper. Our last published booklet was in If you have previously given us your information, you do not need to do it again. Thank you. Women of Zion Notification The constitution needs to be revised to establish the Women of Zion calendar year. The changes noted below will be voted on at the December 9, 2015 meeting. Revise Article V: Election of Officers. All six members of the executive committee shall be elected at a meeting in February. Change to May. Add: The calendar for Women of Zion shall be September through June. Nominations for executive committee shall be presented at the April meeting with installation at the June meeting. Young at Heart meets on Wednesday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the church hall. The guest speaker will be from the Neighbors Place. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Neighbors Place. All adult seniors age 50+ are welcome to attend. Christmas Wreath Sale at Zion Zion will be selling wreaths, door swags, and candy canes this year: 24 balsam wreath for $16, 36 balsam wreath for $27, door swags for $12, and 30 balsam candy canes for $15. Baroka s Wreaths from Fifield, Wisconsin provide the wreaths. The items are beautifully made and well-worth the money. Please pick up an order form in the church office and return it by Sunday, November 29; or call the church office ( ) to place your order. Delivery will be December 5, coinciding with the cookie sale. Payment is due on the day of pickup, which is in the school gym from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the sale will go towards a program at Zion. (Specialty items and other sizes of wreaths are available just ask at the church office.) A Zion Action Team has asked for funding provided by Thrivent Financial. SPECIAL FUNDRAISER On Saturday, November 14, a fundraiser for Al Schepp will be held from 3 p.m. to midnight at the Wausau Labor Temple, 318 S. Third Ave., Wausau. Al, who is Zion member Arnie Luechau s son-inlaw, has stage four throat and tongue cancer. The fundraiser will raise money to cover costs resulting from the loss of work and his medical bills. Calling All Lay Ministers: Past, Present, and Future! Or Anyone Interested in Volunteering! Greater Wausau Christian Services is in need of Lay Ministers or those that have recently graduated from Lay School Ministry, OR anyone interested in volunteering, to help with our Nursing and Elder Care Service Rotation. Days, facilities, and times that we need volunteers are: Tuesdays Mount View at 2 p.m.; Kennedy Park at 3 p.m.; Wednesdays Benedictine Manor at 9:45 a.m.; Colonial Manor at 10:45 a.m.; Wausau Manor at 2 p.m. If you are able, or know someone that is able, please contact GWCS at Cookie Baking 2015 Many helping hands are needed again to prepare for Zion s 25th Annual Cookie Sale on Saturday, December 5. Peppernuts will be prepared in the church kitchen on Thursday, November 12 from 8:30 a.m. until finished. The tasks are easy, but takes a lot of helping hands. Come, socialize, and have fun. Please: we want your help for whatever time works for you! Cut-Out Cookies will be made on Thursday, November 19 in the church kitchen from 8:30 a.m. until finished. We need the most help at 10:00 a.m. and after to frost the cookies. All are tasks that can be done sitting down. Many hands are needed! Cookie Baking will be done the week of November 30 December 4. Also, packaging of cookies and setting up tables will be done December 4 after lunch. To receive these devotions in your , contact the church office and signup! White Paraments to Be Replaced At the recent Altar Guild meeting, it was

7 decided to replace the white paraments, which have become worn out. We are asking for monetary donations to cover the cost of replacement. If you would like to donate money, please indicate that it is for New White Paraments. We will be collecting the donations through December of this year. Thank you.
