The weekly preceding each first Sunday will contain a list of items especially needed so we ll know that our contributions are genuinely needed and appreciated. This shelter, at 437 NE 1 st Street, is open Monday-Thursday, 9am-4pm, and offers a warm place to be, computer resources, lockers, an address, a place to heat up a meal and more. With the help of the Unitarians and you, cash donations will be used to purchase food gift certificates for the families and age appropriate gifts for children we don t yet know how many children will be involved nor their ages so cannot request gifts for any particular ages. In addition, we hope to have a stuffed toy (no larger than 12 ) for each child. Your cash contributions and/or a stuffed toy would be appreciated to help make this a happy Christmas for these families. BOOK AND COOKIE FAIR We are pleased to report that as of the date of this newsletter, the proceeds from the sale of books and cookies on December 1 amount to $1, This amount will change based on book sales made after church on December 9. CONVENTION BASKETS A big THANK YOU is extended to all who contributed items for the two baskets we took to convention to be raffled off to benefit the Commission on Poverty and Homelessness. The offering at the convention Eucharist was also designated for that Commission. The raffle and Eucharist offering generated $5,437. Usually we have no idea how our baskets are received but this year we received a most gracious note from the winners of one of our baskets a couple from Lincoln City! We won your wonderful basket full of tea, coffee & chocolate. There were so many goodies. [My husband] loved the old-fashioned coffee grinder. The hand crafted mugs are so wonderful. We feel very indulged. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Your contributions toward altar flowers are always appreciated. If you are interested in contributing toward our Christmas flowers, now s the time to do so. If you wish, you could have mention in the bulletin that you

3 are contributing in memory of someone, to honor an occasion, to give thanks, etc. Please let Jan in the office know your wishes. HYMN HISTORY Comfort, comfort ye my people Comfort, comfort ye my people was introduced to Episcopal congregations in Hymnal 82, although it has a long history with other denominations. The German original was written as a meditation on Isaiah 40:1-8. The author, Johann Olearius ( ), was a prominent hymnist who compiled one of the most important German hymnals, Geistliche Singe-Kunst. He was the author of more than 300 of the 1200 hymns published. He originally wrote Comfort ye for the feast day of St. John the Baptist but it has become more associated with Advent. The words are based on Isaiah 40 which begins: Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. And in verse 3: The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. The English hymnwriter, Catherine Winkworth, translated Olerius words in She published a collection of translations of German Hymns Lyra Germanica, into English, and later her work included other volumes by which the German chorale tradition of the 16 th -18 th centuries became a part of Englishlanguage worship. The music for this hymn is Psalm 42; the melody was composed by Claude Goudimel ( ). Goudimel was an influential French composer of Latin music who was converted to Protestantism in 1560 and killed by fanatical anti-protestants during the St. Bartholomew s Day Massacre. These words are part of Psalm 42: Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of the waterspouts: All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Hymn #67 (which we will sing on December 9): Comfort, comfort ye my people, speak ye peace, thus saith our God; comfort those who sit in darkness, mourning 'neath their sorrows' load. Speak ye to Jerusalem of the peace that waits for them; tell her that her sins I cover, and her warfare now is over. Hark, the voice of one that crieth in the desert far and near, calling us to new repentance, since the kingdom now is here. Oh, that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way! Let the valleys rise to meet him and the hills bow down to greet him. Make ye straight what long was crooked, make the rougher places plain: let your hearts be true and humble, as befits his holy reign, For the glory of the Lord now o'er earth is shed abroad, and all flesh shall see the token that the word is never broken. - Ethel Myers
