2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Thanksgiving Service Thursday, 10 AM Come, join with your fellow believers and citizens to give thanks for the bounty of the Lord granted to our nation, neighborhood, and homes this past year. At Home To prepare for the feast of our Lord s birth, take up the gentle yokes of prayer, fasting, and charity. The simple prayer, Come, Lord Jesus, enlivens devotion; eating simply for the next several weeks reminds us of Christ s sacrifice for our sake; and gifts and donations of charity reflect the Lord s own gift of His beloved Son. Worship Notes The Last Sunday of the Church Year, coming up on November 26, goes by many names: Sunday of the Fulfillment, Christ the King, Last Sunday of Endtime. Yet the common theme is simple: Christ will come again! And we live and wait for His appearing, even as we now commune with Him at His altar. Next Sunday: Fulfillment (last Sunday of the church year): Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24; First Corinthians 15:20-28; Matthew 25:31-46; Psalm 95:1-7a LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM: Romans St. Paul s letter to the Romans, the longest epistle in the Bible, is considered one of the clearest proclamations of salvation by faith in Christ alone. This book inspired Luther and the Lutheran Reformation, and it continues to create and sustain our faith today. Continuing at Romans 4:1 Tuesdays at 9 AM: First Clement In Philippians 4:3, the apostle Paul mentions a man named Clement. Shortly after Paul s death, and even before the apostle John died, this man either wrote or helped write the letter that bears his name, First Clement, sent to the Corinthians from the Christians in Rome. We will study this insightful letter from Christianity s earliest days. Continuing at 1 Clement 26:1 Thursday Men s Breakfast at 6:30 AM: The Gospel according to Matthew Most of our gospel readings this year will come from the gospel according to Matthew. The tax collector called by Christ, Matthew writes a gospel that some have called a catechism of the Christian life. He tells us the story of Jesus in a way that teaches how the followers of Jesus live by Jesus life alone. Come and let Matthew renew your own living of the Life. Continuing at Matthew 14:34.

3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in November Saint Elizabeth of Hungary November 19 St. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary. Married at 14 to the ruler of Thuringia, she had three children before her husband died when she was 20. Thereafter, she made provisions for her children and devoted the rest of her fortune to the establishment of hospitals and the care of the sick (thus she is often shown with loaves of bread and herbs). She died at the young age of 24, remembered for her compassion. Saint Clement of Rome November 23 St. Clement served as bishop of Rome at a time when the youngest of the 12 disciples, St. John (Dec. 27) may still have been living. Indeed, Clement was likely born just shortly after Christ s resurrection. Ultimately dying as a martyr through drowning, Clement wrote letters, some of which still survive, emphasizing the centrality of Christ s death and resurrection and the importance of apostolic authority in the Church. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Disaster Relief Goal $2,500 Lutheran Disaster Response brings God's hope, healing and renewal to people whose lives have been disrupted by disasters in the United States and around the world. LDR collaborates with other disaster response organizations and religious entities in the US and around the world. This enables the greatest stewardship of resources and optimum impact of response. A few of the many ways LDR is responding here and around the globe: Hurricane Response in Houston, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico and other effected area West Virginia & Louisiana Gulf Coast Flooding Africa Drought South Sudan Relief These are just a few efforts of LDR at work. Your donations will be used entirely (100 percent) in the aid of disaster relief efforts. In addition to your financial support please pray for the people who have been affected by these and other disasters. Christian Radio, Schofield and Milladore Goal $1,000 WCLQ Radio (commonly called 89Q) 89.5 FM, Schofield For over 20 years, 89Q s mission is to im-

4 pact youth and young adults through the medium of radio, providing music that points them to Jesus Christ and that helps unbelievers searching for God. 89Q provides north-central Wisconsin with today s popular Christian music, promotes faith in Christ, and wholesome moral values based on Scripture. Visit their website: WGNV Radio, 88.5 FM, Milladore... has been a Christian family radio station in Central Wisconsin since 1986, located in Milladore, midway between Stevens Point and Marshfield. They have a sister station, 94.1 FM in Antigo. Who listens to Christian family radio? Unlike TV viewers, radio listeners identify closely with their favorite station. Radio fits well into today s mobile lifestyle, and becomes a personal companion at home, at work, in the car even out jogging! It is this intimate characteristic that makes radio so appropriate for Christian ministry. Visit their website: SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Midweek Advent Services: The Anointed One The Baby born at Bethlehem is Christ and Messiah but what do these words mean? How is Jesus the Anointed One for God and for us? Using Old Testament texts, our midweek services (Matins, 10:00 a.m. and Vespers, 6:30 p.m.) will explore the rich promise that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, anointed to redeem the world. The Way of Christ : New Member/Seeker/Refresher Class If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Christian, refreshing their practice of the faith, joining the Lutheran Church, or just learning more about the way of Christ, mark your calendars for The Way of Christ class in January. This course will cover the basics of the Christian faith, explore Scripture, and survey Christian history. If interested, please contact the church office. Thanksgiving Worship Zion will hold its Thanksgiving service this week on Thursday, November 23 at 10:00 A.M. O give thanks unto the Lord! His mercy endures forever. Mark the National Day of Thanksgiving with true thanksgiving as we sing, pray, and praise God for all His blessings. Winter Cancelation Policy In part because our radio broadcast happens rain or shine, Zion does not cancel worship services due to weather. Please exercise your personal wisdom in deciding whether or not to venture forth this winter. Updated Church Directories are available in the church office. Reminder Regarding Cell Phones Please turn off your cell phone when you are in church, so that your phone does not disturb other parishioners during worship.

5 Volunteer to Read the Bible A homebound member of Zion is looking for someone to come to her home, occasionally, to read Holy Scripture to her. If you are interested, please call the church office, Ride Needed To and From Zion s Services Two of Zion s parishioners who reside at Forest Park Village are in need of transportation to and from Zion s service on Saturday or Sunday. If you would like to volunteer transportation, please call the church office, Keeping in Touch With College Kids Do you have a son or daughter going to college this fall? Zion wants to stay in touch! Please advise the church office the student s name, school, and address. The Zion Elders thank you. Women of Zion Christmas Potluck Monday, December 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the church hall. $5 donation required for the meal. Sign up in the church office by November 27. Women of Zion Christmas Gifts for Zion Shut-ins Please bring a wrapped Christmas gift for Zion shut-ins, labeling your gift so the pastors know if the gift is for a man or a woman. Bring your gift by November 22 to the church office. Altar Guild Christmas Party Tuesday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the church hall, with the pastors and staff as guests. The program will feature Christmas games and music. Hostesses are Pam Hoppe, Donna Nuernberg, and Anna Mae Zeinemann. Please RSVP your attendance to the church office, Altar Guild Members You may pay your $10 dues, and also donations for the staff Christmas gifts. Bring your money to the church office and it will be directed to the Altar Guild treasurer. Crocheters Needed for Homeless Mats The Women of Zion have tied together a plethora of plastic bag loops to make plarn (the term for plastic yarn ) that needs to be crocheted to make the mats. The instructions are provided and the plarn can be crocheted at home. January 9 in the church hall. Please call the church office to volunteer. Thank you. Plastic Bags Not Needed A very large number of plastic bags have been donated for making the homeless mats. Please do not bring more bags at this time. Thank you. Thanksgiving Food Drive Refer to the insert page for a guide to the types of donations requested. Bring your donations to the church office; or put them in the conference room by the church office by November 26. Christmas Wreath Sale Refer to the insert page for an order form to order fresh greenery: wreaths, swags, candy canes, door swags, kissing balls, or crosses. The orders are due to the church office by Sunday, November 26.

6 Pick Up Your Pie Plates and Cake Pans that are left over from Strassenfest. The plates and pans are in the church kitchen. Please Note Articles for the weekly bulletin are due at the church office on Wednesdays each week. The bulletins are then printed on Thursdays to ensure that Zion s homebound members may receive the bulletins in the mail by Saturday. Also, articles for the Newsletter are due to the church office by the third Friday of each month. Portals of Prayer for October through December are available in the narthex and by the church office reception area. Large print copies are also available. Ushers Needed Please consider volunteering to help with ushering for Zion s services. Training will be provided. Call the church office if you would be willing to help. Lectors: Reading Lessons at Worship Would you like to read the Scripture lessons at worship? A clear voice, good reading skills, and a love of God s Word and liturgy serve this task best! If you are interested, please contact Pastor Gjerde at the church office. Volunteer(s) Needed Zion s Altar Guild is asking for one or two volunteers to help remove wax from the individual candle holders and also trim the wicks of the candles. These candles are used during Easter and Christmas. Call the church office if you would like to volunteer. Burden Bears A project of the Women of Zion is Burden Bears. These small, stuffed toy bears are decorated with each bear holding a quilt and an attached poem with comforting words. These are to be given to someone who is in need of comfort. Call the church office, or stop in if you or someone you know, would like a Burden Bear. You can strengthen Zion by organizing a team. You will receive up to $250 in seed money. If interested, Thrivent members may call the church office if they are not sure how to get started. Menu: eggs, sausage, French toast, bagels and cream cheese, donuts, muffins, soup, milk, juice, hot chocolate, coffee, and hot tea. $5 suggested donation.
