A Prayer Upon Entering Church Almighty and ever-living God, give us new strength from the courage of Christ our Shepherd, and lead us to join the saints in heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Fourth Sunday of Easter Good Shepherd Sunday May 7, :00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. Jesus Christ is the gate to eternal life, the door of the sheepfold, the Shepherd of the sheep! Through Him we die to sin and rise to newness of life, inheritors of all the Lord s good gifts. This grace is poured out on us by the Holy Spirit in Holy Baptism, which teaches us not only how the Lord loves us, but also how we, little sheep, may live in the green pastures of that love each day.
Sharing God s Blessings Today The flowers at the altar are sponsored by Frank, Pam, Grace, and Elle Stimac, in memory of Carol A. Stimac, Frank s mother. The sponsor charts for 2017 for Broadcasts and Flowers are available for you to sign up. The charts are by the stairs by the northwest entry. On Baptism... In baptism, therefore, every Christian has enough to study and practice all his or her life. Christians always have enough to do to believe firmly what baptism promises and brings victory over death and the devil, forgiveness of sin, God s grace, the entire Christ, and the Holy Spirit with his gifts. In short, the blessings of baptism are so boundless that if our timid nature considers them, it may well doubt whether they could all be true. Suppose there were a physician who had so much skill that people would not die, or even though they died would afterward live eternally. Just think how the world would snow and rain money upon such a person! Because of the throng of rich people crowding around, no one else would be able to get near. Now, here in baptism there is brought, free of charge, to every person s door just such a treasure and medicine that swallows up death and keeps all people alive. Thus, we must regard baptism and put it to use in such a way that we may draw strength and comfort from it when our sins or conscience oppress us, and say, But I am baptized! ~ Martin Luther, Large Catechism Announcements Parish announcements may be found in the weekly newsletter, For You, provided by the ushers after worship. 2
PRELUDE Partita on Diademata ( Crown Him with Many Crowns ) Charles Callahan RINGING OF THE BELLS Please stand and turn toward the cross as it is carried into the sanctuary. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Crown Him with Many Crowns green hymnal #170 GREETING P: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. KYRIE P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. That He is risen and lives means that God has thwarted and undone our human work of Good Friday; the Crucified One died for us and God spoke His Amen to that. Now there is truly good news: Christ was sacrificed for the sake of our sin and for the sake of our righteousness was raised. We have peace with God, for God Himself has spoken the last Word! ~ Martin Niemoeller (German Lutheran pastor who was imprisoned by the Nazis), Easter, 1934 A.D. 3
P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the holy Church, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. HYMN OF PRAISE 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. Lord, raise thou a garrison of soldiers against the devil: for that is what Your Church is. ~ John Chrysostom ( A.D.), Homily on Acts 7:54 P: Let us pray... Almighty God, merciful Father, since you have wakened from death the Shepherd of your sheep, grant us your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know him who calls us each by name and follow where he leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen Please be seated. FIRST LESSON Acts of the Apostles 2: And [the believers] devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were be- 6
ing done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Scott Bruzek, 2005 A.D. SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2: For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 8
L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand. VERSE GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 10th chapter. 1[Jesus said,] Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers. 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes 9
only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. That the baptism of infants is pleasing to Christ is sufficiently proved from his own work. God has sanctified many who have been thus baptized and has given them the Holy Spirit.... Further, we say, we do not put the main emphasis on whether the person baptized believes or not, for in the latter case baptism does not become invalid. Everything depends upon the Word and commandment of God. ~ Martin Luther, Large Catechism P: The Gospel of the Lord. NICENE CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart: C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen Please be seated. 10
SUNDAY SCHOOL During the singing of the hymn, children of preschool age through grade 4 may leave for Sunday School classes downstairs in the church hall. Please reclaim your children at 10:25 a.m. after their music time in the balcony. HYMN OF THE DAY The King of Love My Shepherd Is green hymnal #456 SERMON Holy Baptism, Part Four P: What does such baptizing with water indicate? C: It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. P: Where is this written? C: St. Paul writes in Romans chapter six: We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Please stand. We do not kneel for prayer during the Easter season. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Standing in the glorious light of the resurrection, let us pray. P:... O Lord of life, C: hear our prayer. P: Hear our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Savior. C: Amen Please be seated. 11 Therefore baptism remains forever. Even though someone falls from it and sins, we always have access to it so that we may again subdue the old creature. But we need not have the water poured over us again. Even if we were immersed a hundred times, it would nevertheless not be more than one baptism, and the effect and significance would continue and remains.... Therefore let all Christians regard their baptism as the daily garment that they are to wear all the time. ~ Large Catechism
OFFERING While the offerings are received, please pass in your row the Friendship Register, and add your name(s). If you are a guest or visitor, please include your address. If Christ, your Shepherd, did not seek you and bring you back, you would simply have fallen prey to the wolf. But now He comes, seeks and finds you. He takes you into His flock, that is, into Christendom, through the Word and Sacrament. ~ Martin Luther, Commentary on Psalm 23 VOLUNTARY The King of Love My Shepherd Is Please stand. OFFERTORY He Is Arisen! Glorious Word! David Maxwell 12
OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray... Living God, C: in Christ you will raise us up from death to eternal life. Send your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in His body and blood. Amen THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is indeed right and salutary... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS ( Holy ) 13
If, then, you want to know from Christ Himself, who instituted this Supper, who is Truth itself, and whom the Father commended to us from heaven to hear, what it is that is present in the Supper in, with, and under the bread and wine, and that is offered by the hand of the minister and received by the mouth of the body, He answers expressly, clearly, and plainly: This is My body, which is given for you; this is My blood, which is shed for you. ~ Martin Chemnitz, A.D. WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen ACCLAMATION P: This is the feast of victory for our God. C: Alleluia! 14
SEQUENCE HYMN Christ Is Arisen The Christian Church] is the assembly of all believers among whom the gospel is purely preached and the holy sacraments are administered according to the gospel. ~ Augsburg Confession, Article VII, 1530 A.D. Please be seated. 15
The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy. COMMUNION HYMNS Now the Green Blade Rises green hymnal #148 I Am Jesus Little Lamb 16
Please stand after all have received the sacrament. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us, through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. DISMISSAL P: Go in peace. Alleluia! C: Christ is risen. Alleluia! Please turn toward the cross as it is carried out of the sanctuary. RECESSIONAL HYMN Sing Praise to God, the Highest Good green hymnal #542 SILENT PRAYER 17 A Prayer as You Go Father, through the obedience of Jesus, your servant and your Son, you raised a fallen world. As we celebrate the resurrection, may we share with each other the joy the risen Christ has won for us. Free us from sin and bring us the joy that lasts forever, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
