1 The Weekly Visitor P A C I F I C H I L L S L U T H E R A N C H U R C H 1110 South 90 th Street, Omaha, Nebraska April 20, 2014 Is "Good Friday" really good? Absolutely! It's good for YOU and ME because it means that we can LIVE ETERNALLY because God loved us enough to send His only Son to die for us! He wiped away all our sins--not just some of them. Do I need to be reminded of that each year when I come to worship on Good Friday? Absolutely! On Easter Sunday we need to celebrate that CHRIST ROSE!! HE LIVES!! He died and rose for YOU and me! Come sing and celebrate on Easter Sunday at 8am or 10:30am. He loves us-- we need Him!! Bring someone along and share with them how important prayer is in your life. WHEN: Saturday, May 3, 7am to 7:30pm. WHAT: The PHLC sanctuary will be open throughout the day for prayer and meditation, and we will hold brief devotions based on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer every hour on the hour. In addition, we will observe the historic prayer offices (i.e., prayer services) of Matins at 8am, Vespers at 4pm, and Compline at 7pm. WHO: All are invited to drop in at any time during the day, but we need volunteers to help as greeters and devotion leaders throughout the day. Greeters will serve in one-hour increments, introducing any guests to PHLC and directing people to provided materials. Devotion leaders will read a brief devotion (think Portals of Prayer) with those gathered. The devotion may be prepared either by the devotion leader or by Pastor Schneider. If you have any questions or would like to help out, please contact Pastor Schneider. Again, this year we will host two Courtyard Jazz concerts - Sundays, June 15, July 20 and August 17. 3 Lamb of God Preschool presents Kingdom Camp Summer Camp June 9-13, 9am to noon, Monday through Friday. There will be all kinds of medieval fun for your little prince or princess! Cost for the week is $75. Children must be ages 3-5 and potty trained. For more information call To register go to LambofGodPreschool.org. Parish Nurse Notes: We made it!! All the way to Jerusalem!! This week we traveled 1185 miles and finally arrived in Jerusalem. But did we really take the same steps that Jesus did? Can we walk all the way to the cross with Him and learn of His love and of His sacrifice? On Maundy Thursday we remember the last evening Jesus shared a meal with His disciples before His arrest and crucifixion. The name "Maundy Thursday" comes from the Latin mandatum novum, referring to the "new commandment" Jesus taught His disciples. In John 13, Jesus says, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." But Jesus' disciples just didn't get it. In these last words to them, Jesus is defining what it means to love Him and to walk with Him all the way to the cross. Five times Jesus said that love for Him was connected to obeying His commands. And five times He said that His command is that we love each other as He has loved us. The point is not to be missed; our commitment to love and walk with Jesus is expressed by our love for one another. God's love for us is most powerfully displayed in the death of Jesus on the cross. Love is defined there. To the degree that you are able to comprehend and soak in the love of Jesus for you--that is the degree to which you will be empowered to carry out that new commandment that Jesus gave not only to His disciples of long ago but to us--his disciples of today. So continue your Walk to Jerusalem in love and in service to one another. He is risen! He is risen indeed!! Hallelujah!! For any mother who wants to feed her infant, there is a rocking chair and screen for you to use in the library. The Catechism Corner Confession: How Christians should be taught to confess What is the Office of the Keys? The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to His church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not repent. Where is this written? This is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." (John 20:22-23) Readings for Sunday, April 27: Acts 5:29-42; Psalm 148; 1 Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31 Events of Other Congregations and Agencies The new Peace Center for International Ministry (the former Peace Lutheran Church) at 44th and Grover is having a Clean-Up Day on May 3, 9am to 3pm. 5 Habitat for Humanity-Help Build a House PHLC is a member of the Neighbors South Coalition a part of the Habitat for Humanity community in Omaha. The coalition began construction of a new house at 2451 S. 17th Street on April 11, By the end of July the house needs to be done! That means a lot of help is needed! The house is for a mom and her children. Coalition member reps met Martha Lopez and her family at a pre-build dinner a few weeks ago. They are a very pleasant and appreciative family! You can help this effort in one or more ways: 1. Pray for our Lord s blessings and guidance in this effort to help our neighbor. 2. Work on the house - You can volunteer for as much or as little as you like. Most of the work by volunteers is done on Fridays and Saturdays. Each of the work days has a morning session and an afternoon session. 3. Help with preparing/serving food to the volunteers. PHLC has committed to provide the food for the volunteers working on June 13th & 14th. 4. Contribute Money If you wish to help build the house, Habitat has an online procedure for sign up this year. Here is the site address: This link lists the days of work planned and a general idea of the type of work planned for that day. All of the volunteer work days are Fridays and Saturdays. You can sign up for a half day or a full day. The last column on the right shows the status of how many worker slots are available for each specific date. Pick the date or dates you are interested in and check the box or boxes. Go to the next screen. There you will be asked to enter your address and password the first time you sign up. The next step asks for an address and phone and an emergency contact. You will also be asked to sign a waiver form online. (Waiver forms are also available at the work site). One of the last sign up steps asks if you are a member of an affiliated organization. The 2nd category which is: Are you affiliated with one of the following religious congregations? shows Neighbors South as an option. Choose that option. If you have questions, give me a call or send me an .
