2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day and refresh our souls at midweek. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the night and the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home Preparing for worship begins at home. Consider: in the day before you attend Holy Communion, do you pray for the Holy Spirit to attend and prepare you? Are you mindful, during that day, that you are about to receive Jesus Christ, in His flesh, on the next day? On the day of worship, do you limit your interaction with media (radio, television, phone) in the hours before worship, to help calm your spirit and center your mind? Consider these and other practices as you go joyfully to the house of the Lord. Worship Notes Pray without ceasing, Scripture says. Do you pray privately during worship, say between lessons, before the sermon, or during the offering? Consider praying for the Holy Spirit, the pastors, and your fellow worshipers. Next Sunday: Pentecost 15: Proverbs 25:2-10; Hebrews 13:1-17; Luke 14:1-14; Psalm 131 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM Christ in the Old Testament Jesus Christ was born about 2000 years ago but He did not begin to exist then. God the Son, He has existed eternally with the Father from before creation. Therefore, the whole of Scripture speaks about Him, including the Old Testament, which records events before He was born. It s like being sleuths, discovering Jesus in texts where others may miss Him! Tuesdays at 9 AM: Ephesians St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians is a sometimes controversial book, written in stunning language, that explores the union of the Church with Christ and its ministry as well as marriage, family, and relationships within the congregation. Ephesians 5:11. Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: Genesis The word genesis means beginnings, and this book of the Bible tells us about the beginnings of more than just creation: the beginning of sin, the beginning of salvation, and the beginning of Abraham s family, the nation of Israel. As we learn our beginnings, we learn who we are and who we shall be in the light of Christ. Continuing at Genesis 29:31.

3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in August Saint Clara Maas August 24 The oldest of 10 children in the home of German Lutheran immigrants, St. Clara was raised in East Orange, New Jersey. In the course of her 25 years, she served as a nurse for the American armed services in both Florida and Cuba, where she worked with patients suffering from typhoid, malaria, and yellow fever. She died as the result of a medical experiment, in which she allowed herself to be bitten with a mosquito carrying yellow fever. She had participated in such experiments before, and she was thought to be immune, but this time it proved fatal. Saint Augustine of Hippo August 28 Born in northern Africa to a pagan father and Christian mother, St. Augustine lived his earlier years in a lusty pursuit of pleasure. However, his father became Christian shortly before dying, and Augustine s mother, St. Monica, prayed for his conversion. In time, Augustine not only converted, but also became bishop of Hippo. He wrote several treatises, contending for salvation by grace alone, through the merit of Christ alone, and not by our own works. Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Bishop s Resource Fund Goal $1,000 The Bishop s Resource Fund helps pastors, associates in ministry, and diaconal ministers and their families when they are faced with emergencies, unusual needs, or requests that the bishop deems worthy and important to supporting the health, wholeness, and spiritual wellbeing of our leaders. The Bishop s Resource Fund has provided support to many leaders, and this help has been critical to them. Your dollars are precious, administered in confidence and make a big difference in times of need to our church family. Neighbor s Place, Wausau Goal $1,000 The Neighbors Place (TNP) is located at 745 Scott Street, Wausau. TNP is a unique, locally-supported nonprofit organization with a strong multi-cultural and multi-faith heritage. Their mission is a simple one: to help people in need. In order to meet their mission, they provide a number of programs and services to members of the Marathon County community. These include: a food bank, furniture & basic needs bank, community learning center, youth education, community gardens, and Christmas assistance. They are able to provide support to people in need with the help of businesses, organizations, and individu-

4 als who donate their time, money, and other resources. (For more information on these missions, please see the Mission Bulletin Board display down in the church hall.) SERVING Embodying the Love and Life of Christ Mark Your Calendars for Pr. Gulhaugen s last Sunday of full-time service in the ministry, Sunday, September 25. A reception will be held for him that day. Come give thanks for this servant of God s ministry in the gospel! Memorial Service Zion will host a memorial service for Rhoda Anne Heian on Wednesday, August 31, as part of the 10 AM matins. You are encouraged to attend and invite others as we give thanks for Anne s life and the future resurrection of all believers. It Begins This Week! Photographs for Zion s pictorial directory will be taken in the church hall from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on these dates: August 23, 24, 26, 30, 31 and September 7, 9, 13, 14; and August 27 only from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Make plans to reserve your sitting today! Quilting... Mondays: August 29 and September 12, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the church hall. Volunteers are welcome! If you have any materials to donate, such as fabric, bed sheets, or old clothing, please put this in a bag, label it for Quilting, and bring to the church office. Quilters: Please label the items you bring to identify them as quilt tops, backs, or fillers. Each item should be 64 X 84. This project supports Lutheran World Relief. The quilts will be shipped on Saturday, October 1. Young at Heart meets this Wednesday, August 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the church hall. All adult seniors age 50+ are welcome to attend. Bowls in Church Kitchen There are several bowls in the church kitchen that were left from the Salad Buffet event. Please pick up your bowl! Those bowls not claimed by September 1 will be donated to the Fall Rummage Sale. Kantor Quest for August 21: In LBW, look at hymns #75 - #90. To what season (section) do they belong? Strassenfest in Zion s Gym Each week we are highlighting a different booth from the annual Zion Strassenfest, held Saturday, October 8. Pantry Homemade canned foods and garden produce, dried herbs, spices, plants, corn stalks, etc. People are being recruited to paint wood pallets with the design of the American flag. Call Lynn at These specialty items are needed: handembroidered dishtowels and antique sleds or sleighs. Dr. Paul Devantier will be the guest speaker. He is a graduate of Zion school and sonin-law of Zion member Leota Stapel. Burden Bears A new project of the Women of Zion is Burden Bears. These small, stuffed toy bears are decorated with each bear holding a quilt and an attached poem with comforting words. These are to be given to someone who is in need of comfort. Call the church office, or stop in if you or someone you know, would like a Burden Bear. Please Note Articles for the weekly bulletin are due at the church office on Wednesdays each week. The bulletins are then printed on Thursdays to ensure that Zion s homebound members may receive the bulletins in the mail by Saturday. Also, articles for the Newsletter are due to the church office by the third Friday of each month. Usually, July and August are a combined Newsletter. Bread and Pie Baking on August 26 Phyllis Bliese will be baking French bread ($3 each) and whole wheat bread ($4 each); apple and lemon meringue pies ($6 each); cherry and pecan pies ($8 each) in Zion s church kitchen. If you can be a kitchen helper, call Phyllis at For bread and pie orders, sign up using the order sheet in the church office; or you may call the church office at Proceeds will be sent to Lutheran World Relief to help pay for shipping of quilts. Zion Organ Concert Broadcast If you would like the opportunity to hear and see the fine organ concert presented by Timothy Olsen here at Zion last October, the program is now being aired on Wausau Area Access Channel Channel 980. Ideas to Spark Community Action Refer to the bulletin board posting at the northwest entrance of Zion for the many ideas from Thrivent Financial s action teams across the country that have accomplished service projects. You can strengthen our community by organizing a team. You will receive up to $250 in seed money. If interested, Thrivent members may call the church office if they are not sure how to get started. THANKING Thrivent Financial Associate Steven Zeinemann recently co-sponsored a Thrivent Action Team that targeted raising school supplies for families that qualify for the reduced, or free, lunch program offered in our Marathon County schools. All collected supplies were donated to the Fill A Backpack, Fill A Need (FABFAN) program in Marathon County and will be distributed on Saturday, August 20. Steve reported that the Action Team Event raised 36 backpacks, some school supplies, and $520 in donations which the Workplace Volunteer Council will use to purchase additional needed supplies.

IN THE COMMUNITY Events around Central Wisconsin Rosemans Upcoming Flute/Piano Recital Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 p.m. at the Wausau conservatory of Music. Drs. Jacob and Molly Roseman share their gifts in worship at Zion several times each year. Faith in Action Are you age 60 or older? Do you need a little extra help with groceries? Friendly volunteers from Faith in Action of Marathon County are ready to deliver food from the Community Center of Hope food pantry or from The Neighbors Place to your doorstep. To request assistance, please contact Kelly at Volunteer Drivers Needed for Wausau Area Mobile Meals Meals are picked up at Aspirus Hospital and delivered by volunteer drivers daily between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The meals are delivered in the Wausau area, including Rib Mountain, Schofield, Rothschild, and parts of Weston. Most routes take about 1 hour, with 6 to 10 stops.
