1 For You Zion Lutheran Church, Wausau + Reformation October 28 and 29, 2017 PRAYING In Our Prayers This Week Persecuted Christians in: Turkey Kuwait China Sister Congregation Lehurutshe Parish, South Africa Missionaries ~ Elliot and Serena Derricks, Lutheran Bible Translators Studying at Seminary ~ Vicar Joe Pinzl Wedding Anniversaries ~ Larry and Lenore Grosinske (39 years) ~ Ray and Shirley Kurth (63 years) A Note Regarding Our Prayers: It is the Lord s great delight to hear the prayers of His people, and we are promised that Jesus prays for His Church eternally at the right hand of God. He knows each of His believers personally and by name. Our prayer in church is an earthly expression of His prayer, and it is our privilege and joy to offer these petitions as a congregation. To tend our public prayers best, requests for prayer will be kept on our list for three Sundays. Unless additional prayers are requested, the names will be removed at the end of three Sundays in the confidence that our Lord still prays and cares for His own, and we are never far from His love. Further requests may be made at any time. These prayers will be listed under Comfort, Health, and Recovery. Requests for on-going prayer in the face of extended illness and other serious concerns will continue to be listed, at specific request, under Those who need our on-going prayer. Please know also that your pastors and vicar, as under-shepherds of the Good Shepherd, pray for the congregation and its members daily. May the fellowship and intercession of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Please submit your prayer requests to the church office ( ). We can print prayer requests that you make for yourself or immediate family members.
2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home What Reformation hymns do you know by heart? Consider memorizing A Mighty Fortress, one of Luther s most popular hymns proclaiming Christ s victory over the powers of sin, death, and the devil. Worship Notes Our worship today is much shorter than early Lutheran services, which often combined both Latin and the language of the people. For example, the Sanctus would be sung in Latin by the choir, followed or accompanied the people singing it in German. Also, organists might intersperse hymn stanzas with organ improvisations that would last up to 15 minutes. This approach led to services that were 2-3 hours long. Next Sunday: All Saints Day: Revelation 7:9-17; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12; Psalm 149 LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Sundays, 10:15 AM: Romans St. Paul s letter to the Romans, the longest epistle in the Bible, is considered one of the clearest proclamations of salvation by faith in Christ alone. This book inspired Luther and the Lutheran Reformation, and it continues to create and sustain our faith today. Continuing at Romans 3:27 Tuesdays at 9 AM: First Clement In Philippians 4:3, the apostle Paul mentions a man named Clement. Shortly after Paul s death, and even before the apostle John died, this man either wrote or helped write the letter that bears his name, First Clement, sent to the Corinthians from the Christians in Rome. We will study this insightful letter from Christianity s earliest days. Continuing at 1 Clement 17:1 Thursday Men s Breakfast: Matthew Most of our gospel readings this year will come from the gospel according to Matthew. The tax collector called by Christ, Matthew writes a gospel that some have called a catechism of the Christian life. He tells us the story of Jesus in a way that teaches how the followers of Jesus live by Jesus life alone. Come and let Matthew renew your own living of the Life. Continuing at Matthew 13:24.
3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in October Saints Simon and Jude October 28 Little is known of these two apostles other than their presence among the 12 disciples (Luke 6:12-16). It is possible that they were both brothers of Christ (Mark 6:3), although this identification is by no means certain. St. Simon is also called the Zealot, and St. Jude is traditionally identified with St. Thaddeus, as both names are paired with Simon in the lists of the disciples (see also Mark 3:13-19). St. Jude may be the author of the Biblical book that bears his name. Saint Johann von Staupitz November 8 A native of Saxony (in northern Germany), St. Johann was the vicar-general of the Augustinian monastic order to which St. Martin Luther (Feb. 18) belonged. It was Johann who regularly heard Luther s confession and encouraged him to focus less on his guilt and on more Christ s mercy and righteousness. He also encouraged Luther to pursue his doctorate in theology, and appointed Luther to his professorship at the university in Wittenberg. Conceivably, without Johann, there would have been no Lutheran Reformation! Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran World Relief Goal $2,500 Lutheran World Relief Opportunities and Achievements: 1. LWR was already present in place working with their local partners at the time of earthquakes. They were well positioned to immediately engage and coordinate their emergency response with the governments and local government committees. This coordination allowed LWR to reach those most in need faster and with official support. It also served to prevent aid duplication and identify gaps in coverage. 2. LWR s cash-for-work activities clears blocked main roads quickly, allowing government aid to reach more of the remote population. 3. LWR accompanied many partners to help improve overall response.
