A Prayer Upon Entering Church God of wisdom and love, source of all good, send your Spirit to teach us your truth and guide our actions in your way to peace. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Second Sunday after Pentecost June 18, :00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. Our Lord Jesus Christ establishes the kingdom of heaven on earth by creating faith in His people. To this end, He sent forth messengers, twelve disciples, to be His partners in proclaiming the Word. Now risen and ruling at God s right hand, the Lord continues this good work still today and are you not amazed? The man with the most power in the universe uses that power to send out messengers with a gospel, good news, the announcement of peace, forgiveness, and blessing in His Name. Simply put: Wow!

Sharing God s Blessings Today Sunday s Radio Broadcast is sponsored in loving memory of Esther Beckman by family and friends. The flowers at the altar are sponsored for blessings received on Adeline Brandenburg s 101st birthday (June 14) from her family. The sponsor charts for 2017 for Broadcasts and Flowers are available for you to sign up. The charts are by the stairs by the northwest entry. A Welcome for Those With Young Children This house is your children s home, too. Relax and enjoy your time here: Jesus knows that children tend to wiggle and squawk, so please don t feel embarrassed by it. Your children are welcome at Zion. To make it a bit easier on your family, please consider sitting towards the front where your children can easily see the worship leaders, hear the words, note the colors, wonder about some of the images up there, and embrace the action at the altar. As we go along, softly explain the liturgy to your children, encouraging them to chime in with their parts: Amen! Lord have mercy! And also with you! I believe! Our Father! All of that belongs to them, too. Be sure to sing and pray your parts as you stand and kneel and sit. Your children learn by following your lead. If you and your child must leave, please hurry back. There is a nursery downstairs for those who would like to use it, but like Jesus, we want your children in the liturgy, not out. Let the little children come unto me. (Luke 18:16). If you need help, just ask. There are lots of folks here who will lend a hand. Announcements Parish announcements may be found in the weekly newsletter, For You, provided by the ushers. 2

PRELUDE Three Chorale Preludes In Homage to J.S. Bach on Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Larry Visser RINGING OF THE BELLS Please stand. INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Please kneel. Silence for reflection. 3

Grace is the first bestowing word. And with grace comes peace the real thing from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. And what comes from Jesus Christ? He is the one who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present age, according to the will of God and the Father to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Got that? You can t get any more Good News than that! ~ Pr. Norman Nagel, the Second Sunday after Pentecost, 1998 A.D. P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church, and by the authority of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen Please stand. ENTRANCE HYMN Praise to the Lord, the Almighty green hymnal #543 THE APOSTOLIC GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. KYRIE P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. 4

P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the holy Church, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. GLORIA P: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. 5

SALUTATION AND COLLECT P: The Lord be with you. 6

P: Let us pray... Almighty, eternal God, in the Word of your apostles and prophets you have proclaimed to us your saving will. Grant us faith to believe your promises that we may receive eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen Please be seated. OLD TESTAMENT Exodus 19:2-8 2They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, 3 while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel. 7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8 All the people answered together and said, All that the LORD has spoken we will do. And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD. It s not what I don t understand in the Bible that bothers me, it s what I do understand. ~ Mark Twain, A.D. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 7

The real problem for people is not that they are living too loosely, but that they are bound to the tyrants of sin, death, and the devil. The true exercise of authority in the ultimate sense is through the Holy Spirit. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Cor. 3:17). If the church wants to talk about exercising authority in the proper sense, it had better learn first and foremost how to preach the gospel and distinguish it from legal authority. ~ Pr. Gerhard Forde, A More Radical Gospel PSALM 100 L: Be joyful in the LORD, all you lands;* serve the LORD with gladness and come before his presence with a song. C: Know this: The LORD him self is God;* he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. L: Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise;* give thanks to him and call up on his name. C: For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting;* and his faithfulness endures from age to age. All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen EPISTLE Romans 5:6-15 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one 8

man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand. VERSE GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 9th chapter. 9:35And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed 9

What puzzles the world, and its wise philosophers and fanciful pagan poets, about the priest and people of the Church is that they still behave as though they are messengers. A messenger does not dream about what his message might be, or argue about what it probably would be; he delivers it as it is. It is not a theory or a fancy but a fact... Those runners gather impetus as they run. Ages afterwards they still speak as if something had just happened. ~ G. K. Chesteron, A.D and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 10:1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. P: The Gospel of the Lord. APOSTLES CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 10

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Please be seated. HYMN OF THE DAY God Loved the World So That He Gave 5 If you are sick, if death is near, This truth your troubled heart can cheer: Christ Jesus saves your soul from death; That is the firmest ground of faith. 6 Glory to God the Father, Son, And Holy Spirit, Three in One! To You, O blessèd Trinity, Be praise now and eternally! 11

SERMON Just Giving It Away! Please kneel. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. P:... Lord in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen Please be seated. OFFERING While the offerings are received, please pass in your row the Friendship Register, and add your name(s). If you are a guest or visitor, please include your address. VOLUNTARY Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts Gordon Young Please stand. OFFERTORY 12

OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray... Merciful Father, C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. The Lord be with you. Similar to the beginning of the Divine Service itself, the first word spoken to begin the Communion is the name of the Lord. It is the Lord s Supper, in name and reality, not the supper of Christians. The Lord is the host, the head of the family; it is the Lord who serves (Luke 22:27). ~ Pr. Norman Nagel, Lutheran Worship, History and Practice 13

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Joy is not something one can define or analyze. One is entered into joy. Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord (Mt 25:21). And we have no other means of being entered into that joy, no way of understanding it, except through what has been for the Church both the source and the fulfillment of joy, the very sacrament of joy, the Eucharist. ~ Alexander Schmemann, For the Life of the World P: It is indeed right and salutary... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS ( Holy ) WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. 14

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me. THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen ACCLAMATION P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, C: we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. AGNUS DEI ( Lamb of God ) 15

Please be seated. The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy. COMMUNION HYMNS I Come, O Savior, to Your Table green hymnal #213 Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling green hymnal #381 Please stand after all have received the sacrament. POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE 16

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us, through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. SILENT PRAYER A Prayer As You Go O God of compassion, you sent your Son Jesus to move among your people with healing for every hurt of life. Send him among us with that same power to heal our sinful lives, through the same Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen 17
