2 WORSHIPING The Liturgy This Week LEARNING Nourished by God s Word Matins + Wednesday, 10 AM A liturgy of morning prayer to praise God for the day and refresh our souls at midweek. (Chapel) Vespers + Wednesday, 6:30 PM A liturgy of evening prayer to praise God for the night and the light of Christ. (Chapel) At Home A week that began with remembering the dead now ends with the story of a young man being raised from the dead. In your daily devotion, remember those whom you know who have died in the faith and give thanks for the hope in which they died that they, too, will be raised from the dead not to face another death, but to live with Christ eternally. Worship Notes At the beginning and the end of worship, you may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of Baptism. We gather in the name of God who brings the baptized together to receive His blessings and to send us to our neighbors to love and serve them in the truth of that new life. You may also make the sign of the cross in the Apostles Creed as you confess the ultimate end of the baptized life, the resurrection of the body. Next Sunday: Pentecost 4: 2 Samuel 11:26 12:10, 13-14; Galatians 2:15-21; 3:10-14; Luke 7:36 8:3; Psalm 32:1-8 Sundays, 10:15 AM Resurrection in the Bible Christ in the Old Testament The Sunday morning Bible study will begin two new studies over the next several months. First, we ll look at what Scripture teaches us about the resurrection and the hope of eternal life. What doe Christians look forward to? Then we ll explore where the Old Testament points ahead to Jesus Christ in its stories and prophecies. Tuesdays at 9 AM: Acts Acts is the story of God acting through the Holy Spirit to spread the truth of the saving act of Jesus death and resurrection throughout the world. That is the story, its characters, its events, and its teaching, on which this class will focus. Continuing at Acts 21:27. Thursday Men s Breakfast at 7 AM: Genesis The word genesis means beginnings, and this book of the Bible tells us about the beginnings of more than just creation: the beginning of sin, the beginning of salvation, and the beginning of Abraham s family, the nation of Israel. As we learn our beginnings, we learn who we are and who we shall be in the light of Christ. Continuing at Genesis 12:1.
3 REMEMBERING Heroes of the Faith in June Saint Boniface June 5 Originally called Winfrid, St. Boniface grew up in England. As a young man, he began traveling to Germany in hopes of converting the pagans there; for this task, he was renamed Boniface, meaning doer of good, by the bishop of Rome, and he eventually became archbishop of Mainz. At a confirmation service in 754, he was slain by pagans. In his last words, Boniface commanded the Christians with him not to fight back, but to do good to those who were harming them. Saint Barnabas June 11 St. Barnabas was a Jew from the island of Cyprus who became a Christian and accompanied St. Paul (Acts 4, 14). He worked with Paul to defend Christians against those who insisted that true believers had to observe Jewish customs and laws. It may be that he was the cousin of St. Mark (April 25; see Colossians 4:10). Tradition holds that he was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus. Free cards commemorating these holy brethren and others are available in the narthex. REACHING Zion s Monthly Mission Emphases Lutheran Bible Translators Goal $2,000 Zion s June Newsletter told us about the Plugers returning to the United States. They are sad about leaving Zambia, the many friends they made in the last six years, and the work of the Nsenga Bible Translation project. They will miss the challenges working on the complicated Bible Translation in rural Africa. We pray for God s blessings on the Old Testament project. We also pray that the Nsenga translators will be able to continue under the guidance of the Nsenga Committee and direction of the Bible Society of Zambia to complete the full Bible. God bless this project. Homme Home, Wittenberg and Wausau Goal $1,000 The Legacy of Services to others for Homme Homes began in 1882 when Rev. E. J. Homme founded Homme s Orphan and Old Folks Home, under the sponsorship of the Lutheran Church of America. Since that time providing health care and residential housing services in a dignified and respectful fashion has become the cornerstone of services to area communities. Homme Homes has served the needs of the eld-
4 erly at its Wittenberg Campus since 1882 and in the Wausau area on its Forest Part Village Campus since They provide independent and supportive housing services, residential services, and the latest in skilled and rehabilitation services.
