1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 69, No. 5, May 2003 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Frank J. Marchone We had some kind of electronic mix-up last month and part of my article didn t make it into the newsletter. (No, it wasn t the editor s fault.) Included in the part that didn t make it was my wish that you have a wonderful Easter. So, a belated Happy Easter to everybody. Congratulations to Brother Wally Horner for another successful Nun s Appreciation Night. You know, they say a person becomes an expert when he makes a difficult job look easy. I have participated in this project for several years and observed Wally in action. He must be an expert because with him in charge, every thing runs smoothly and all the Knights have a great time working on this project. At the April Social Meeting, I appointed the Nominating Committee. It is comprised of three Past Grand Knights who are also our three Trustees: Floyd Jarboe, Chairman, Celso Barrientos, and Dave Morgan. Warden Richard Podrasky will be unable to continue through the chairs. So we will need a Chancellor as well as Warden, and all the other officers. Being such a large council, we need men with a variety of skills to run it. If you are a new member, getting involved in one of the projects is a good way to get to know your Brother Knights. If you are not a new member, consider becoming more involved. Remember what you get out of belonging to an organization depends entirely on what you put in to it. The Nominating Committee has a lot of positions to fill. If they call you, please consider what they ask. Better still, don t wait to be called. Their names and telephone numbers are listed on page 2 of this newsletter. Give them a call and volunteer! There still are a few rooms available at the Howard Johnson for the Annual State Convention in Ocean City the weekend between Mother s Day and Memorial Day. It is a fun time for family members of all ages. (Continued on page 2) Deadline for next Knight Life - May 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Joseph M. Feakes The month of May is filled with many special events. You may have a birthday, an anniversary, or a wedding. There are, however, three very significant days this month. May 11 th is Mother s Day. It would be impossible for me to over-emphasis the importance of this day. This is a special opportunity to honor those special women in our lives who have given us so much. It probably wasn t always perfect (do you remember what soap tastes like?), but the memories and love will always be with us. Please take a few moments to remember Mary, Queen of the Knights. Perhaps you could recite the prayer. Ask for her help, her blessings, and her intercession. Pray the rosary. May 26 th is Memorial Day. We have much for which to be thankful, and many to thank. To all veterans, current members of the Armed Forces, and to your families I offer my sincere gratitude for all that you have done to make America the great country it has become. Certainly, this day takes on special significance this year. I ask all to join me in expressing the Knights of Columbus commitment to Patriotism. ONE NATION UNDER GOD! (Continued on page 3) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins Joy is the Word and the Acts of the Apostles is The Book. This sums up the Easter Season. Joy does not stand alone. We are all joyful because of something. And that something is the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. During the Easter Season the Acts of the Apostles is read every day during the celebration of Mass. It is absolutely electrifying to read the reaction of the Early Church to this greatest of all human events. Even now, the Acts of the Apostles continues to renew the lives of many. Make an effort to do some reading from this book between now and the Feast of Pentecost and you are bound to be renewed in your faith. Congratulations to PGK Shige Hatanaka on the birth of Gavitt James, born on Easter Sunday. Mother & Baby are doing just Fine.

Most people think of Memorial Day as a legal holiday which officially starts the summer season. In actuality, Memorial Day is defined as a U.S. holiday commemorating members of the armed forces killed in war. At this particular time in our nation s history, let s stick with the official meaning. Let us pray that soon there will be no more members of the armed forces killed in war. God bless. Make plans to attend Mass as Council. After all it is a Holyday of Obligation. Six times a year the Church requires us to make a special effort to celebrate God s gift of his Son. That s not too much to ask. Certainly we all have much for which to pray. With only a few weeks left in the fraternal year there is not much time left to focus on programs and membership. NOT!!!! District One has been the location of many exciting and unique events this year. Keep up the momentum. Membership is never over. Please keep the Celebration going. Thanks to everyone who has made this fraternal year a success so far. I encourage every member to become involved in at least one activity every quarter. Your council will be the better for your efforts and you will be surprised how good you will feel. In fact, the more often you participate the easier it becomes to find the time. I hope to see you at a council meeting soon. Vivat Jesus FAMILY OF THE MONTH The May Family of the Month is in St. Bernadette s Parish. The family of four can usually been found at the Friday Night Family Nights, even when Dad is in the kitchen. He is a PGK who sells real estate; she is a full-time mom. The husband and wife work as a team on various council activities, such as the Children s Halloween Party and the Pro-Life Dinner and Auction. Their two sons (Marshall and William) keep them busy, but Dad still finds time to be editor of this newsletter and well as the State Bulletin. You guessed it! 4 4 PRO-LIFE REPORT Charles X. Suraci Meet Tarcisius (Tor'sis-ee-us). Though his name may be a little hard to pronounce, his strength and determination to live for Jesus Christ should be recognized by all those seeking to live out the Gospel of Life. Tardsius lived in the time shortly following Christ's death, when the pagan Roman Empire prosecuted and killed Christians. At one time the prisons were filled with Christians sentenced to die hoping only to receive the Eucharistic Body of Christ before their martyrdom. Torcisius, at only 12 years of age, courageously volunteered to carry the Holy Eucharist to the prison in spite of the danger. The Holy Father consented, knowing the pagans wouldn't suspect Tarcisius because of his young age. Courageously, he headed toward the prison in prayer, clenching the Holy Eucharist to his chest with both his hands. His trip seemed successful until he ran into a group of pagan boys from his school playing in the street. They wanted Torcisius to join them. But he had no intention of being diverted from his mission. The boys attempted to find out what he was carrying. When Torcisius remained quiet and tried to proceed, the boys grew angry and very demanding. One boy knew Torcisius to be a Christian and he suspected Torcisius was carrying the Body of Christ. The boys tried to steal and destroy the Blessed Sacrament; but Tarcisius' love for Christ was so strong that to protect the Holy Eucharist with his life, Torcisius tried to get away, but the bullies would not be deterred. Torcisius' persecutors picked up nearby rocks and began to throw them. Stoning is a horrible and violent way to die, yet, when young Torcisius' body was found, the Holy Eucharist was clenched tightly to his chest. Torcisius succeeded in protecting Christ from harm, unto death. Because of his courage and protection of his Faith, Tarcisius has been declared a Saint. Fortunately, we live in a time and place where we don't have to die for what we believe. We know abortion is murder, and we have the freedom to preach this wherever we go. Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes we lose friends and even get failing grades on pro-life papers. But it's at times like these we should look to those, such as St. Tarcisius, who died for what we now have available to us everyday-the Eucharistic Body of Jesus Christ. PGK John Fox practices up on his longboard in anticipation for the upcoming Maryland State Convention which will be held on May16-18th, 2003 COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Chancellor Peter D. Bonin What a wonderful council to belong to with the array of activities available for young and those who think young. Let's start out with the Easter food baskets, chaired by Tom Murphy and assisted by Tim Sullivan, Bob McDermott, Tim Morse and Tony Horner. Over 200 bags were delivered to needy families including gift certificates. Volunteers from St. Catherine LaBoure's"Gabriel Project" were at the council to help distribute the food baskets. Palm Sunday the Ralph Vallone family chaired the Children's Easter party. Hot dogs, potato chips, cup cakes were served along with soft drinks.. Mother Goose had a "Rabbit Hutch {made of ginger bread] Each one of the little people received a ticket. The lucky ticket holder took the hutch home and four took home a rabbit candle holder with candles that was shaped like an egg. The stories told by Mother Goose kept their complete attention.. A tradition carried on for generations was the Easter egg hunt. Every one there had their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. The next event was a free concert that was arranged by Charles Suraci. Members of the band (over 40 count) are all retired military musicians from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. The concert played to an audience of around 125. The music was patrtiotic and traditional and was enjoyed by all. The Birthright dinner/auction was chaired by Laura Marks. This affair was well attended and raised funds for items needed for young mothers. Laura Marks, you are to be commended for a job well done. Another event was the Fred Horner Memoriable Golf Open which was chaired by PGK Joe Marks. This is one event that you sign up for a year in advance.. Here is Joe's number (301) Give him a call. Another enjoyable affair was the Maryknights "Vaudeville Show" performed by the Port Tobacco Players, inc. The show s t a r t e d o u t wi t h a s i n g - a l o n g where the audience participated remembering their early youth and sing alongs at family gatherings. The show ended with another sing along where all joined in. The Cardinal's Annual Charity Ball for the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute was attended by 25 couples from our Council. Your Council Officers are looking forward to your attendance at this coming month's activities. UNTIL THEN... Jesus, Mary and Joseph Pray For Us.

5 MARY S WIDOWS William Fenton, PFN On April 7, 2003, members of Mary s Widows met at the China Chef restaurant in Wheaton for their monthly luncheon. Thirty three ladies were in attendance. Hostesses for the occasion were Aline Morin, Pat Hilton, and Margaret Meredith. The 50/50 was under the supervision of Marian Ruck and Louise Githens. Elizabeth Mescher was the winner. At the June meeting our Chairlady, Ruth Ferraro, will be concluding her two year term in that position. Ruth has done a fantastic job and we are all most grateful to her for her untiring efforts as Chairlady. We will be receiving nominations for the position of Chairlady for the next two years at the May luncheon. May is the month Holy Mother Church dedicates to the Blessed Virgin Mary, God s Mother and our Mother. Let us join with our beloved Holy Father in the following prayer, O Mary, Mother of God, Mother of the Church, in this hour so meaningful for us, we are one heart and one mind; as were Peter, the Apostle, the brethren, joined in prayer, with You in the Cenacle. We entrust to You our lives. Take up our Consecration and unite it with that of Jesus and Your own. Look upon the needs of your children as You did at Cana, when You were touched to the heart by that family s situation. Today, the greatest need of this Your family is for vocations presbyteral, diaconal, religious and missionary. So, reach with Your suppliant omnipotence the hearts of many of our brethren that they may listen, understand and respond to the voice of the Lord. Repeat to them, in the depths of their consciences, the invitations addressed to the servants at Cana: Do whatever Jesus tells you. Teach us and give us the attitudes of the good shepherd. Feed and give increase to our apostolic dedication. Strengthen and ever regenerate our love for the suffering. Enlighten and enliven our resolves toward virginity for the Kingdom of Heaven. Infuse and keep in us the sense of fraternity and communion. GIVE US YOUR BLESSING, LADY, OUR MOST BELOVED MOTHER! John Paul II Potifex Maximus 5 SURGE WITH SERVICE! CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner PAROCHIAL SERVICE PROGRAM To date, $4,200 has been raised for St. Catherine Laboure grade school. These funds have been turned over to the Principal. NUN S APPRECIATION NIGHT We celebrated the 31st Annual Nun s Appreciation Night on the 24th of April. Eighty nuns, representing 26 different religious communities attended. It was a night filled with fun, joy, and happiness for all the nuns. Thanks to all the Brother Knights that helped this night a big success. HONOR THE BLESSED MOTHER The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. May is a beautiful month and what is more fitting than to honor the Blessed Mother in Heaven by saying the rosary daily.especially during the month of May, many graces are received when we meditate on each mystery of the rosary. MOTHERS DAY Mothers day is celebrated on May 11. When we attend Mass on Mothers Day, let us offer up the Mass for our motherswhether living or deceased. What greater gift or sign of love can we give our mothers than having the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered for her.
