1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 74, No. 3 March 2008 CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins Leonard Calvert s victory over the Parliamentarians led by Richard Ingle was short lived because that summer (1647) Calvert died of an illness. In his will, he appointed Margaret Brent as the executor of his estate, giving her the authority to take all and pay all. This instruction had to do with the paying of the militia, which under his leadership had retaken the colony. If this matter was not faced head on, the militia could cause trouble. Margaret Brent did as she was instructed. When word reached Lord Baltimore several months later, not only that his brother was dead, but also that she sold his personal property and cattle along with his brothers, he was furious. He wrote a letter to the Maryland Assembly and told them so. They quickly responded that she did the best she could considering the circumstances. The county seat of Saint Mary s County was named in honor of Leonard Calvert. He refused to let the hopes and dreams of his family come to nothing after years and years of hard work. He worked diligently to extend English rule in America, to ensure his fellow Catholic colonists being able to practice their Faith freely but quietly. As far as Margaret Brent is concerned - there is much more to tell! DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Ernest Harley It is the time in the Fraternal Year, , that Grand Knight s are the busiest, with paper work due Supreme, the State Deputy, and the District Deputy. Each Council, should have, by now completed it s Semiannual Council Audit Report, with copies due to each of those named above. Third Quarter Surge for Service reports should be well on the way to completion, and ready for submission. The time between the submission of the Second and Third Quarter Reports is shorten in order such that plaques and certificates that need to be ordered and produced, many and varied, have sufficient time allowed for their manufacture. Grand Knights need to give this their special attention. For those Knights, representing their Council at the State Convention, Credentials must be completed and signed, and forwarded to the State Secretary. Make sure that each copy contains the Seal of your Council. The summary of the progress of the Council during the Fraternal Year is presented in the Annual Book of Reports. The mornings are brighter earlier, and the evenings are b r i g h t e r later..soon it will be time to play some serious golf. Well, maybe not serious..but at least play golf. I can t wait. Yesterday we buried the Council Tootsie Roll King Jerry Tufano. Jerry was quite a character. He was truly dedicated to the Tootsie Roll drive. He was persistent, he was relentless, and he was at times, a pain in the ass. But he knew what he was doing was right. Sixteen Councils in Montgomery County pool their Tootsie Roll collections. Private organizations in the county submit requests for grants from the Knights which are reviewed and discussed by the Grand Knights. On Dec. 14, 2007, I met with the Grand Knights of those Councils and collectively decided how much of a grant to give to which organizations. On February 9, I had the privilege, along with Chancellor George Carter and Treasurer John Fox of attending the Tootsie Roll Awards Banquet at Mater Dei Council in Rockville. 3 Mary s Widows Mary s Widows will hold their first luncheon meeting of 2008 on Monday, March 3 rd at a place to be announced. This will be our first get together since the Christmas luncheon. God gathered together the music of a bird s song, the soul and heart of a poet, the twinkle in the star sheen, the brave and fierce heart of a lion, and the laughter of the angels and blended them into a group of wonderful people called the Irish. On March 17 th, all the world is Irish. Voices from every nation blend together as we hear the melodious words of Danny Boy, I ll take you home again, Kathleen, and When Irish eyes are smiling come wafting through the air. To those of us of Irish descent, St. Patrick s Day is particularly significant. History has recorded for all time the valiant efforts made by this devoted Ambassador for Christ to spread the true Catholic religion among the residents of the Emerald Isle. In our own century we have seen many attempts by enemies of the True Faith to sabotage the noble work of St. Patrick both in Ireland and throughout the world. It is a tribute to the apostolic zeal of this Saint of the Emerald Isle that the Faith of our Fathers is probably as strong and as steadfast there as it is in any place on earth. From a committed Knight of Columbus, proud of his Irish heritage, I send this IRISH BLESSING to all Mary s Widows and to all my fellow Knights and their families: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields and, Until we meet again, May God hold you in the Palm of His Hand. 3 William E. Fenton, Sr., PFN Some of this year contestants in the Annual Free Throw Contest. Thanks to Bob Wigmore for Chairing this event again this year. 5 PROLIFE NEWS Charles X. Suraci STEM CELL RESEARCH BREAK- THROUGH SURPASSES EMBRYO KILL- ING RESEARCH After years of struggle in opposing the killing of embryos for the sake of their stem cells, pro-life concerns have been vindicated by the discovery that adult stem cells can be reprogrammed to a state that has all the features of embryonic stem cells. Two scientists, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University and James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in late November published studies describing this breakthrough in the medical journals Cell and Science. Dr. Yamanaka was able to convert skin cells from a 36 year-old woman into induced pluripotent stem cells (ipscs), and Thomson used cells from a newborn baby. The technique they used introduced four genes into the skin cells which reprogrammed them into the less specialized state of pluripotent cells. These cells were "patient matched," meaning they could be transplanted into a donor without the body rejecting them. Another advantage, according to Thomson, is that it can be easily replicated in any lab across the world. "People didn't know it would be this easy," he said. Fr. Thomas Berg, executive director of the Westchester Institute, a Catholic research institute, commented: "Ever since the debate of embryo-destructive stem cell research began in earnest, we've known that the best answer to the ethical impasse would be one that allows the search for stem-cell related cures to go forward without harming or destroying embryonic human life in the process. We now have that solution." There are some problems yet to be resolved. Since researchers disrupt the DNA of the skin cells to begin the process, there is a potential for causing cancer in the cells. This may mean that the cells would not be used for medical transplants for patients with diabetes or Parkinson's. On the other hand, "the use of viral vectors that integrate into the DNA of the reprogrammed cells" may be a technique that can be avoided wilt further research, according to Maureen Condic, associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at the University of Utah. It may not be necessary to use the cancer-associated gene. Richard Doerflinger, associate director of the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops, said regarding pro-life concerns, "I think this is something that would be readily acceptable... It's a win for science and for ethics. I think th i< is a wonderful advance for basic research in stem cells am maybe some day for regenerative medicine." 5 (Continued from page 1)Grand Knights Report dollars collected in Montgomery County was $49,114 which was distributed to 21 organizations in County. Fr. Rosensteel sponsored St. Joseph s House, and they received a grant of $5,400. Many thanks to all who helped collect last year, with a special thank you to Chancellor George Carter who headed the drive for us. Jerry would be proud. Friday Night Family night has really taken off this year. Over the last month, I have seen more families, and more children at the Council for Friday night dinners than I have in the last four years. It s great! Please keep coming. It is great opportunity to meet members, their families and make new friends. I enjoy it because, I can usually find someone new to help with project or activity, and it s a good way to network for either Council or personal purposes. It s true. It does happen. I just had an instance where I introduced two members, who helped one another resolve a neighborhood problem. Very cool! Please do not forget the spring Blood Drive. The date is Saturday March 15, 2008, 9:00 noon. Delicious breakfast served to all who show up..eggs to order, hash browns, sausage, etc. If you don t show, Red Smith will call you every night from now until September to remind you of the next blood drive. It will be much easier on you life if you show up on March 15 th!! The Convention is coming in May (5/16 5/18). Call the Clarion Hotel (800) to reserve your room. Mention the Knights of Columbus to receive our group rate of $159/night. Please continue to pray for our Brothers serving in Iraq, Pat, Don and Eddie, and all the service men and women who work each day for us so we are free to read this. When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen ~Ernest Hemingway~ KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Continuing the theme of recognizing Brothers who perform their service behind the scenes, this month s Knight of the Month fits the bill. He is always at the Council, making improvements to the physical plant. He has told me that he spends more time here than he does with his wife. Most members probably have no idea what this gentleman (and his cohorts) do around the Council. He fixes things. He and his crew are multi-talented. They replace broken toilets, shattered doors, light bulbs. They put up signs, replace carpets, tiles, even entire floors and walls. He hears more complaints, and receives more instruction on how to do things than the Grand Knight. He is a very patient man. Thank you for all the work you do for us, Knight of the Month for March 2008, Joe Damiano CONVENTION NEWS!! 6 MARYKNIGHTS NEWS OFFICERS President.....Luanne Flanigan V. President......Margie Cuff Treasurer....Kathy Arvedlund Secretary.....Jill Audet Historian Helen Vallone Chaplain.....Rev. Gerard Trancone or Open Hearts- Open Minds First, I have to say how great it was to see so many young families this past Friday night! I hope you will all continue to participate not only for Friday night dinners but in all the other great stuff the Council does! We need your energy to keep the Council active! A special invitation to all the ladies I spoke with to join the Maryknights! So how are you doing with your Lenten sacrifices? Did you give up chocolate, TV, swearing? (Last year my sister gave up her cell phone!) Or did you promise something extra like praying the rosary each day? I have been trying to go to mass each morning but haven't made a whole week yet. All this is pretty light weight when you consider what Jesus sacrificed for us. So how should we prepare for the Glorious Resurrection of Christ? It's never too late to start something. A friend recently sent a link to an article about doing nothing for Lent. Are you kidding?! We all struggle with family obligations and worldly pressures. We multi-task, frantically going from one responsibility to the next, and we're plugged in everywhere- s to answer, phone calls to make! Who could possibly have time to do nothing? But doing nothing makes great sense! How else do we recharge? How else do we cope with these daily pressures except by clearing our minds and beginning again? I have come to really appreciate silence. And the best place I have found for this is during Eucharistic Adoration. Now, I know that if I'm praying I'm not doing nothing. But often, after I've prayed, I do (nothing). It's remarkable what you can hear in the silence. We are usually so busy asking Him for help, that we forget to listen for His answer! So make a promise to DO NOTHING for Lent! You might be surprised by what happens! Here is the link to the article for those who are interested: This month, Father Trancone will present our annual Lenten Talk. It's always beautiful and beneficial to turn inward for some good soul searching, especially right in the middle of Lent! After Father serves up food for our souls we'll feed our stomachs by sharing in our annual Pot Luck Supper. Don't forget to bring a dish! I think we've set another record! Our card party on Feb. 19 netted $1100! Everyone had a great time and our sincere thanks go to Jenny Wilson and Mable Capacchione for all their work in making this event so successful. With Easter and Spring right around the corner, there is much to look forward to, including our Special Activity! Since we are having such a banner year, let's all join together to make this event a success and present 'our Knights' with a really large donation as well. 8 Track Saturday Night will be 'happening' on Sat. March 29 from 8pm- 12midnight. $20 per person. (Open bar, hot hors d'oeuvre, dancing, munchies, martini bar, bottled beer, 50/50 and FUN!) ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT GO DI- RECTLY TO THE COUNCIL! Call you friends and family...don't miss this! Contact Margie Cuff for info. S.O.S.! Some of our members in Leisure World are in need of a ride to the monthly meetings. If you live in the area or pass by Leisure World on your way to the meetings and would be willing to offer a ride to a fellow Maryknight please let us know. A l s o, Fr. Trancone is in need of a passenger van to transport students from the Deaf Center at Gallaudet. Do you know anyone who can donate one? Please ask. Jerri Bonin is collecting Sunday coupons. Please save them and bring them to the meeting or leave them in the Knights Room for her. A special thanks to Mable Capacchione for sending out all those cards to our families and friends. Her constant vigilance and caring nature are truly a beautiful gift to us all. Happy Easter! -- Margie Cuff RETIRED MENS CLUB OFFICERS Chaplain...Rev. Joseph Perkins (301) Ext. 23 President Dick Haller ( ) Vice-President Ron Morris ( ) Treasurer Dick Donnelly ( ) Secretary.....John Gannon ( ) Now that Spring is almost here, it is time to be thinking about outdoor activities. The Montgomery County Department of Recreation runs the Senior Outdoor Adventures in Recreation (SOAR) program. SOAR is designed for adults over age 55, but bear in mind that each activity or trip might require a lot of walking and/or physical exertion. The schedule usually includes four baseball games each season, two each for the Orioles and the Nationals. This might be a good way to see the Nationals new ballpark. All of the trips are by motor coach and start at the Holiday Park Senior Center. The cost for a trip generally runs between $40 and $75 which sometimes includes lunch. To find out about the registration process, please call Betty Altmann has quite a few trips in the works for this year which could be of interest to the RMC members. These trips include the Hamptons in September and Las Vegas in November. There are also two trips planned for Lancaster; in October to see Charley Prose and in December, the Miracle of Christmas. More information re dates and prices will be available at the RMC luncheons, or you could call Betty at The next luncheon will be on March 25 th. Our favorite Irish humorist will be sharing some of his best stories with us. Hope to see you there.
