1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 73, No. 9, September 2007 CHAPLAINS REPORT Fr. Joseph Perkins On March 3, or there about, in the year 1634, Captain Henry Fleet guided the future Marylanders to St. Cement s Island. There most of the settlers remained while the rest sailed up the Potomac River on the Dove. It was important that they make their presence known to the local chieftain to assure him and his people that the colonists intentions were honorable. After they returned to St Cement s Island, on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, they claimed the land for England and Cecil Calvert, the Second Lord Baltimore. The celebration of Mass and the placement of a Cross on the island was part of the ceremony. (Do you remember when a busload of us got a chance to visit that island and saw The Cross which was put up in 1934 to celebrate Maryland s 300 Birthday?) Captain Henry Fleet knew a local group of Native Americans who were preparing to leave their village. This village was located on a bluff overlooking a river, which lead into the Chesapeake Bay. This was to be the sight of Maryland s first capital, which they called St Mary s City. The date was March 27, 1634 when the settlers traded Deadline for next Knight Life September 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Ernest Harley Coming in October, is the Supreme Membership and Recruitment Blitz. Each Council is asked prior to the actual blitz, the actual recruiting of new candidates, for the order, to prepare a plan for accomplishing, their membership requirements through their blitz efforts. What is needed is the times, places, and how recruitment goals will be accomplished. At the Grand Knights College, and through information imparted by the District Deputy, Councils, were informed of the upcoming event, and methods for doing their recruitment. Grand Knights should gather with their membership chairmen, and committee members, and establish a plan of action, that can be implemented, and be successful (Continued on page 2) Web site - GRAND KNIGHT S STATION John V. 3 3 FRATERNAL BENEFITS Brian Graham Retirement...it could last 10, 20, 30, 40 years. Why not take minutes to talk about it? Fraternally, Brian C. Graham, CLU, ChFC, FIC FAMILY OF THE MONTH These folks are always willing to help in any way they can. They are dependable and reliable. A sampling of their participation and contributions: he has served as a Director on the Building Association, membership drive and retention committee; they help with Tootsie roll drive, children s parties, kitchen crew, bartenders, picnic, and convention. She is a Maryknight and mint julep queen on Kentucky Derby Day. I m sure I have missed some things. But, I am certain that they have always asked what more can they do to help out. It is families like yours that make us all a successful Council Family. Congratulations to the Family of the Month for September 2007, Tom and Debbie Kelly and family. Thanks for all that you do. FIRST DEGREE OCTOBER 16TH KNIGHT OF THE MONTH This gentleman can be seen occasionally in the afternoon relaxing in the Knights Room. He enjoys the conversation and camaraderie. However, this time of the year, he is pretty busy. He is writing letters, having copies made, buying envelopes, getting mailing labels, stuffing envelopes, buying stamps, recruiting able-bodied stamp lickers, and dropping letters in the mail box by the hundreds. He leads the charge and gets the job done in a quiet and efficient manner. The result of his efforts is that the Council pockets a nice chunk of change each year, and the State scholarship fund is replenished. I recently asked him how it was going and he replied well it s too hot to fish, too hot for sex, so I might as well stuff envelopes. So, when you receive your Incentive car raffle tickets in the mail, please fill them out and return your donations to the Council to the attention of the Knight of the Month for September 2007, Brother Jim Ries. Thank you for all your work Jim and congratulations. The weather will cool down soon, so you can resume a couple of your favorite pastimes, other than stuffing envelopes. PRO-LIFE Chuck Suraci Archbishop Naumann Calls for Courage and Brains in Pro-Life Action At the Prayer Breakfast June 15 during National Right to Life's Annual Convention, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, KS used characters from The Wizard of Oz to challenge attendees in their pro-life activity. Like the Scarecrow, "we need to pray for not only a brain, but for the wisdom to know how to best communicate to our contemporaries the sanctity of human life," Archbishop Naumann related. He pointed out that a pro-lifer "not prudent in the manner of presentation, can actually drive people away from the truth.". Courage like the Lion's is also a must: "Where human life is at risk, we cannot afford to be timid," the Archbishop insisted. We should also, like the Tin Man, desire a heart "that will move us to seek to rescue with love those we are unable to protect with the law," he further noted, explaining the need for postabortion ministry to reach out "with compassion to those who have chosen abortion and now deeply regret their choice... "Like Dorothy we must ask the Lord to give as the wisdom, courage and love to bring our nation home... to the values needed to restore family life and respect for human life." He called on the participants to "build a civilization of love and a culture of life where every child is treasured as a unique image of his or her Creator." Archbishop Naumann criticized the position of Catholics who used the rhetoric of "choice" which "obfuscates the human tragedy that is a consequence of every abortion--the destruction of an innocent and defenseless human life." He said that such a position that "championed a self-contradictory position of personal opposition but public support for abortion," was similar to that of Stephen Douglas in his debate with Abraham Lincoln on slavery, saying that he was "not favoring slavery but of the right of people...to choose to sanction slavery." At the same time, the Kansas City Archbishop pointed out, there are hopeful signs such as the Supreme Court decision to uphold a ban on partial-birth abortions, a decrease in the number of abortions, and polling results showing a shift of opinion in the pro-life direction. "If Americans truly want to restore respect for human life today then we need to demand from our leaders and from ourselves nothing less than the tearing down of the wall of injustice and oppression created by Roe v. Wade," the Archbishop stated. WOULD YOU LIKE TO RECEIVE YOUR KNIGHT LIFE EARLY VIA ? SEND YOUR ADDRESS TO KOC2169@GMAIL.COM AND START RECEIVING YOUR KNIGHT LIFE EARLY EACH MONTH!

Memberships and Ceremonials Dr. Celso S. Barrientos, PGK, FN The success of our Fraternal Organization depends on dedicated members. Once a practicing Catholic man realizes the advantages of becoming a knight, he will just say to himself, why did he not join sooner. The Knights of Columbus is the only fraternal family service organization that is continually growing and providing unlimited range of services to church, community, council, family and youth. As knights, we would want to share the opportunity to every eligible Catholic man. Let s all go out there and ask others to join the Knights of Columbus. The success for strong membership is our Ceremonials the Admission and the First Degree. The admission should be conducted in a professional manner and with compassion. The First Degree Ceremonial is the vital step to commitment to our Order. It should be done in a solemn and dignified fashion. In this regard, I invite interested members to consider joining the Ceremonial Team of Father Rosensteel Council. There are many major speaking parts and support positions that are important to the success of the First Degree Exemplification. If you are interested to join the Ceremonial Team, please come to the meeting on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 7:30 PM at the Council. If you have any questions, you may call me at home, (301) or my cell phone, (240) You can also me at hope.celso@verizon.net.. 4 MARYLAND STATE COUNCIL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE BENEFIT We are well into the car raffle benefit selling season. I believe everyone had Fun. See slogan above. Notice how we can work those principles into our activities. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for all the members of the Friday night kitchen crews who have been vigilant about saying prayers before serving dinner. It only takes about one minute, and can be very powerful. Just stop for one minute, relax, remember what we are here for, and give thanks to God for all He has done for us. It is a great way for us to demonstrate our Faith and let God and everyone else know we believe in His sacrifice of himself for our redemption. In the spring, at the ham & eggs golf outing, 12 Fr. Rosensteel Knights, stood on the first tee at Northwest Park golf course and prayed the Our Father before playing 18 holes of golf. That was a true demonstration of our Faith. See slogan above.
