Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 81, No. 7, July 2015 CHAPLAIN S CORNER Fr. José Cortes SERVING GOD BY SERVING HIS CHILDREN GRAND KNIGHT S STATION The Mustard Seed Jesus says that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. I do not know if you have ever seen a mustard seed but I have. It is very small, smaller than a pinhead, like a grain of dust. Nevertheless, despite being such a tiny seed, it springs up into a huge tree. With the Parable of the Mustard Seed Jesus tells us that the coming of His Kingdom is a gift with infinite possibilities. The land that receives the seed represents us. The seed falls in the land of our hearts as an unforeseen gift. The land did not plan to receive the seed. It came as a surprise. The soil where the seed is sowed needs only to welcome the seed. The soil that received the seed sees with great amazement that the tiny seed becomes a big tree that extends its branches toward the infinite sky. Many are those who can dwell in its shade. We have discovered the mustard seed in the encounter with Christ. The moment of the encounter was a moment of grace. The falling of the seed brought unearthly music into the earth. It was an amazing experience of beauty, goodness, and truth. A seed was sowed in the secret of the heart. As time passes by, we discover more and more the endless possibilities in such a small thing. In the beginning, we almost confounded the seed with the soil. However, the land that remains faithful to the gift received shall see the growing of the immense tree with amazement. In the finite seed there was an infinite promise. Those who patiently wait shall see the recompense. Let us pray that all the gifts that we receive will produce abundant fruit in our lives. May we always be faithful to the graces received from God. Fr. José To Our Active Duty Service Men and Women and Reserves: Thank you for your bravery, commitment, dedication and sacrifices you make for us and to keep America Free! To Our Veterans: Thank you for all the sacrifices you made and for serving your country well! To the Spouses & Family Members of Our Service Men and Women: Thank you for your spirit, strength, support and the sacrifice you make in helping to keep America Free! God Bless You and God Bless America! IMPORTANT MEETINGS Business Meeting: July 7, 2015 * Budget to be Discussed Special Meeting: July 21, 2015 * Budget to be Voted On GK ALLAN E. JIMENEZ First I would like to thank God for placing the Knights of Columbus on my path; as well as for the wisdom to join the Knights. I want to thank all of our members for putting their trust in me and electing me as their Grand Knight. I also want to thank my family, my fellow Brothers, friends, and colleagues who have shared with me their prayers and well-wishes for a successful year. This fraternal year promises to be an exciting year. We will continue the good work started by our previous Grand Knights as well as build upon their work and implement new and exciting programs aimed at having a positive impact on our Council, our communities and churches. This year we will also be celebrating our 95 th Anniversary! I hope that you will join us to celebrate this momentous achievement. Working together we will strengthen and grow our Council so that we can celebrate our 100 th Anniversary! As we begin our journey I want us to focus on Serving God by Serving His Children. This year I want us to come together in Unity, Fraternity, & Patriotism to help the communities and churches we serve through Charitable activities. While we are grateful to those members that always step up and help out at every event, I want to invite those members that have not participated to join us for at least one event every month. According to the Corporation for National & Community Service only 28.5% of Maryland residents volunteer, making us 21st among the 50 states and Washington, DC. My goal is to get at least 29% of our members to volunteer. (Continued on Page 4) July 2015 Page

I have enjoyed the challenge of putting out a document that arrives in a timely manner and contains current and useful information for our members. GK Cavaliere was determined this year to get the Knight Life into our homes by the first of every month. I think he did a great job! I also owe thanks to PGK Ralph Vallone (may he rest in peace) for being such a stickler on proof reading when he was Grand Knight. It was an important lesson that helped make the Knight Life a really dependable source of information. I will, just for a moment, get on my soapbox and encourage you, Knights of the Rosensteel Council, to recognize the importance of this form of communication for our members. Please see the vital part it plays in keeping this council together and thriving. The act of getting the Knight Life out should also be considered a community building activity. It really is a lot of work for 1 or 2 people to manage and a more member involved approach should be considered. The typing, folding, taping, mailing, and record keeping chores are easily divided and conquered. I know this was done in the past and I believe it should be revived. I would like to see this Reflections column take off. That means more stories from more of you! C mon! You have to admit that it is fun reading about people and days gone by. It keeps us connected to the past and helps us know what changes to make for a better future. Anyway, thanks and God bless all of you! See you at the Council! July 2015 Page 3

(G.K. continued from Page 1) Please remember that Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. I look forward to seeing you at as the volunteer events that we will be putting together. On page four (4) and five (5) of this newsletter you will find my Action Plan At-A-Glance as well as the Fraternal Year Budget. As you review them, please know that these are not written in stone, they are a starting point. This is your Council and thus you have a right to share your constructive thoughts and ideas with me. I promise that if we can implement them, we will do our best to do so. I plan to use my time as the Grand Knight to find reasons for success and implement programs that will help us meet our mission as the Knights of Columbus. To that extent, I have made arrangements so that I can work from the Grand Knight s office at least three (3) if not four (4) Tuesday s each month. I will be available from 9 am 5 pm on those days and I invite you to come and meet with me should you have any questions and/or just want to talk. The Grand Knight s office is located in the billiards room next to the Archives Room. You can always find my cell phone and e- mail address on the Knight Life should you ever need to get in touch with me. I thank you once again for affording me the opportunity to serve as your Grand Knight. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our communities, churches, our Council and in making this a better world. Vivat Jesus! OUR COUNCIL ACTION PLAN AT-A-GLANCE My goals for the Council include but are not limited to: 1) identifying the needs of our members, 2) strengthening our infrastructures to ensure that we are around to celebrate our 100th Anniversary, 3) working closely with the Building and Clubhouse Associations to ensure our growth and success, 4) encouraging and getting more of our members engaged in the various volunteer projects we implement, 5) growing and strengthening our Squires/Roses program; 6) engaging our Retirees and Mary s Widows in special projects, 7) working closely with our Maryknights, and 8) developing programs and strategies to serve our families more effectively. OUR CHURCHES We serve three churches in the area: 1) Christ the King, 2) St. Bernadette Church and 3) St. John s the Evangelist. While we host events at all three churches during the year, I am looking for new and innovative ideas to better serve our churches. If you have any ideas or strategies on how to better serve our churches and/or if you would like to serve as a liaison between us and your church, please me. FOREST GLEN BUILDING ASSOCIATION, INC. (FGBA) My goal is to continue working closely with the FGBA to maintain and improve our building and grounds. We have done several walkthroughs covering different areas. Based on these walkthroughs and others done by the Board members, they have submitted a comprehensive plan of action that promises to improve our building and grounds. I invite you to attend the next FGBA meeting to learn about their plan as well as contribute to the plan. FATHER ROSENSTEEL CLUBHOUSE ASSOCIATION, INC. (FRCA) My goal is to work closely with the new Board to develop and implement an infrastructure that will help us do business more effectively. My plan includes but is not limited to: 1) helping develop an effective Business Plan, 2) ensuring that all paid employees have a job description, 3) serving as liaison between Supreme and FRCA around the new regulations for Home Corporations and 4) facilitating the collaboration between the Council, the FRCA and the FGBA so that we come together as one ensuring the success of our Council. PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE: WHO ARE THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS? The Knights of Columbus are men of Honor: If a child of God should fall, a Knight is there to help them up. If a child of God should go hungry, a Knight is there to provide nourishment. If a child of God losses their way, a Knight is there to help them find their way. If a child of God needs help, a Knight is there to provide help & encouragement. If a child of God is afraid, a Knight is there to protect them. If a child of God is in pain, a Knight is there to provide comfort. If a child of God is suffering, a Knight is there to provide compassion. A Knight leads by example and lives their life in such a way that those who know you but don't know God will come to know God because they know you. CALL TO ACTION Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. This year I want us to come together in Unity, Fraternity, & Patriotism to increase the number of service hours and programs that we deliver to the communities and churches we serve through Charitable activities. I want to invite all members to take five minutes to complete the volunteer survey ed to you. If you have not received it, please me and I will send it to you. I would also like to ask you to commit to just two (2) hours a month to making a difference in the communities and churches we serve. For those members that always step up and help whenever called upon, we Thank You for your commitment and dedication to the Knights. Page 4 July 2015

Proposed Council Budget for Fraternal Year Have Questions About the Budget? Do you have questions about the budget? If you have any questions on the proposed budget, I invite you to call me, send me an with your questions or drop by the Grand Knight s office and share your questions with me. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. $$ Money Motion $$ A money motion has been made to extend up to $4,000 for the reimbursement of Needy Family Food Basket receipts. These receipts are for 2013, 2014 and 2015 expenses. July 2015 Page 5

DEPUTIES DIALOGUE I am excited about my new role and I greatly appreciate your confidence in me. My duties as stated by Supreme are as follows: * Assist the grand knight with the operation of the council and any other duties assigned to me by the grand knight. * In the absence of the grand knight, I am to preside at council meetings. * It is recommended that I serve on the council s Retention Committee. Piece of cake right? Well leave it to me to complicate things. I believe you expect far more than just the above, I know I do. It is my hope and goal to do far more but what it most important to me is that I am performing on your behalf. I want to be as transparent as possible. To that point I hope to share with you my agenda for each month. July 2015 Your Deputy Grand Knight s Agenda 1. Support our new Grand Knight and prepare myself, my Chancellor and Warden for their present roles and council willing their upcoming roles. The transfer of knowledge has been a long lost practice here at Rosensteel. I have spoken to dozens of past officers that feel they were on their own. Let me pose an example I am sure President Obama has spent countless hours preparing VP Biden for a possible term as President. Okay, bad example, I am sure President Bill Clinton has spent countless hours preparing Hilary for a possible term as President. Better? 2. My point is that I want Bruce and Jim to step in their new and next roles full of confidence, historical knowledge and fully versed in the processes and practices needed to perform their duties to your expectations. 3. This means that I not only must be fully versed in my duties and expectations as a DGK but also those of Chancellor, Warden and yes Grand Knight. I plan to be busy. 4. Yes, I will do my best to preside at council meetings if Allan is unavailable. Furthermore, the Grand Knight has a lot on his plate and I wish to assist in any way possible to allow him to focus on his agenda and goals. 5. If asked I will serve on the Council Retention Committee. We must keep our members and our council viable; we must instill in our members the importance of their contributions, contributions of their time, effort, faith, and support. How do we do this? Well we do this every day at Rosensteel! We are a great council, doing great work! We need to share our compassion and love for this council, its members and our community, by doing so we will not only retain and engage current membership but secure new membership. 6. I will cook for Bingo, Friday Night Kitchen crews, Breakfasts, and events. No Pizza Night in July 7. I will work as a Director on both Building and Clubhouse committees. 8. I will continue to act as Circle Leader for the Squires/Roses until we have a suitable replacement, at which time I will not fade off into the sunset. Be Worthy Terrence P. Moore CIF UPDATE There is good news! We are nearing our initial goal of $20,000 in the Capital Improvement Fund. According to the bank, we recently passed the $18,000 mark. One of the first uses of the fund will be to repair our parking lot; so, much of the money will be put to good use this summer by the Building Association. The directors of the CIF thank all those who made donations to the CIF and otherwise supported this fundraising project. We plan to install the names of those who have contributed a cumulative amount of $ or more on a large plaque which will be displayed in a prominent place in our Knights Room. Please save-the-date of December 12 th. This is the 95 th anniversary of the Father Rosensteel Council and the CIF plans a gala holiday season dinner dance. More details will be coming soon. The directors hope you have an enjoyable and safe summer. Patrick Warner, Chairman MARYKNIGHTS Congratulations to our Officers! We extend a big thank you to Fr. Joseph Calis who said mass for our installation of officers on June 8th. It was our pleasure to have him with us. Over the summer we take a break from many of our activities. There are no meetings for the months of July and August except for the Board. Also it s usually too hot to bake so your sweet tooth will have to wait until September. Pray that we make the best choice possible for this year s charity ball recipient. Have a safe and happy summer! See you on September 14th! MARY S WIDOWS Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! At our June get together 26 widows, PGK and Coordinator Mike Koon and Fr. Perkins enjoyed a delightful lunch as guests of the Council. Your generosity is deeply appreciated. Hope to see you at our July meeting. You will be called. All widows of a Knight are welcome to join. Call Lois Devlin at for more info. ROSENSTEEL RETIREES CLUB Recently one of our friends experienced a Medical Emergency. This older senior citizen put his head down during a social meeting and nodded off to sleep. After a few minutes, a friend nudged and tried to awaken him but he was incoherent and unable to speak. A retired doctor in the room performed a preliminary examination and asked for the rescue squad to be summoned. He was transported to an ER and is now fine. This was a reminder that we should all remain vigilant for these little health problems. As retired senior citizens we are particularly vulnerable to emergency health problems. Our July Luncheon will be on the 28 th, the fourth Tuesday of the month. Page 6 July 2015
