3 CHAPLAINS CORNER MAY, MONTH OF OUR LADY Dear Brother Knights and Ladies Auxiliary: One day during World War II, a group of marines was on patrol on the island of Guam in the South Pacific. Suddenly they came upon three Japanese soldiers fleeing on foot. A volley of gunfire followed, and the three Japanese were killed. One of the marines routinely checked the dead soldiers for grenades and possible intelligence material. As he put his hand into the blood-soaked pocket of one of the soldiers, he felt a piece of thin cardboard. Pulling it out, he was surprised to find that it was a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The pocket in which the Japanese kept it was over his heart. The marine kept that picture. Later he put it in his prayer book to remind him always to pray for the soldier to whom it belonged. That story is moving for two reasons. First, it tells us something deeply personal about the Japanese soldier. The one picture he chose to take into battle with him was not a picture of his loved ones, it was not a picture of God the Father, or of Jesus, or of the Holy Spirit. It was a picture of Mary. And the pocket in which he chose to keep the picture was the one over his heart. The second reason that story is moving is that it tells us something deeply personal about the marine who found the picture. He didn t throw it away. He kept it. He put it in his prayer book and prayed daily for the Japanese soldier who used to keep it over his heart. The reason the marine did this is that the picture helped him see that the Japanese was not his enemy but his brother. They both had the same spiritual mother: Mary. During this month of May, in a special way, to be faithful to our God as we follow Jesus, and do our part so to make of the world one family, let us take advantage of the key instrument which is the Rosary to our Lady, and recite it with the heart as we work and pray for peace, unity, fraternity, and charity the world over. 5 A message from your Field Agent Michael Exner, FIC, PGK Don't assume you can't afford Disability Income Insurance One of the biggest mistakes you can make regarding disability insurance is to assume you can't afford it or you won't qualify. Before you make that assumption, do some basic research and apply for coverage through the Knights of Columbus. The Order s Income Armor product gives you options that can help you fit this critical protection into your risk management budget. Here are two ways you can reduce your premium: 1. Choose a two-year or five-year maximum benefit period. Depending on your age, the best option is probably a policy that pays benefits until you reach age 67. But a two-year or five-year duration benefit period would cover disabilities you might encounter in your working life. 2. Choose a longer elimination period. An elimination period is the number of days a total disability must exist before benefits begin to accrue. Typical elimination periods are 30, 90, or 180 days. Choosing a longer elimination period lowers the policy s premium. But be sure you have enough set aside in your contingency fund to account for the longer gap.
