1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 70, No. 8, August 2004 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Peter D. Bonin Our year began with Mass and Installation of Council Officers or the year Father Perkins and Father Trancone celebrated the Mass. The installation followed the Mass, the sincerity of both was felt by all. Upon leaving the church we were greeted by the sounds of a lone bagpiper from the D.C. Fire departments Emerald Society Pipes & Drums. On entering the council hall we heard the music of The Jokers Wild. Cocktails were ready to be served with exotic hor d' ouvres followed by a dinner of spiraled ham, fancy mixed vegetables, scallop potatoes and green salad. The dessert of four lucious cakes, each named after a chair officer. Thanks to everyone who assisted in making this event a memorable occasion. Our next affair will be The Council Picnic, scheduled for Sunday, August 9,2004 at Walter Reed Hospital Annex, 12 noon til 5p.m. Photo ID and Travel Card Required. Past attendance at this event has shown how successful the tradition has carried on with a record breaking crowd once again. Coming up is also the Past Grand Knight's Testimonial on Sunday, September 12, Something new this year on September 24, 2004 is a Fundraising Dinner Dance & Silent Auction 7p.m. - 11p.m. This next subject is being presented to you for your consideration & comments on what you feel should be planned and implemented for the good of the council. Your replies could be included in the Knight Life under the heading "Members Suggestions". Drop your replies in the GK'S mail slot, let your GK and EDITOR know what your thoughts are for improving council activities. Recall hearing and reading "No One Asked Me". Carry a form 100 in your pocket or the glove compartment of your car. It is as simple as that, Just Ask. May The Lord Be Always At Your Side. Deadline for next Knight Life - August 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Kevin L. Jeffords Build for your team a feeling of oneness, of dependence upon one another Vince Lombardi As members of the Knights of Columbus, how can we show our council leaders that we are working together as a TEAM? Membership This is the start of our new fraternal year, a fresh start, a time not to look back on what was done last year, but a time to plan and step forward and work together as one. Focus on membership now. Don t wait. What is the best way to get a member to join our order? Ask him. Always carry a form #100 with you. The gentlemen you see in church every Sunday, the young father with a family. Explain what the Knights of Columbus is all about. Explain that we are not a men s club but a Catholic Family Fraternal Service Organization. We involve everyone in the family. Once in our order, each member should stress the Shining Armor Award. Within the first year of his membership the new Knight must be involved in at least three council service programs, attend at least (Continued on page 2) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins And now for something different! A rerun (almost)! After I submitted last August s article, I realized there were two additions needed to complete the list of annual Marian celebrations. One was mistakenly omitted because of a change of date this one will be printed in caps. The other was a new addition to the liturgical calendar. That one will be printed in caps and italics: On August 15th we will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. This got me thinking about the many feasts in the course of the Church Year having to do specifically with Mary the Mother of Jesus: January Mary, Mother of God; February Our Lady of Lourdes; March The Annunciation; May OUR LADY OF FATIMA, The Visitation, The Immaculate Heart of Mary; July Our Lady of Mt.Carmel; August The Dedication of Mary Major Basilica in Rome, The Assumption, The Queenship of Mary; September The Birth of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows; October Our Lady of the Rosary; Novem- (Continued on page 2)

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. William E. 3 NEWS FROM SUPREME Knights of Columbus Insurance Earns Top Rating-Standard & Poor s confers AAA rating for 12th consecutive year For the 12th consecutive year, Standard & Poor's has conferred its top "AAA" rating on the Knights of Columbus, based on its "extremely strong capital and liquidity and a very strong competitive position." S&P rates 1,468 life insurance companies, of which only 34 received the AAA rating. The Knights of Columbus is the only fraternal insurance company in this elite group. S&P reported that its insurer financial strength rating of the Knights of Columbus reflects "superior capitalization, strong profitability and liquidity." Supreme Knight and chief executive officer Carl Anderson said that the S&P rating "reflects our success in providing insurance products and a fraternal agency system that are among the very finest in the industry." Insurance sales over the past year included whole life, term life, annuities and long term care products. Knights of Columbus insurance is sold exclusively by more than 1,400 agents who are also members of the organization. Standard & Poor's credited "this strong agency force" and the "unique affinity" agents have with policyholders for the loyalty of the customer base. "Protecting Catholic families with life insurance has been a central part of the Knights of Columbus mission since our founding," Anderson said. "We have succeeded spectacularly, and our members recognize the superb value of the products we offer. During the past year we have reached an extraordinary milestone: $5.2 billion of new life insurance issued, an increase of more than 16 percent over the previous year. In the past decade, our amount of insurance in force has doubled, to more than $50 billion. And the fact that we have been able to maintain S&P's highest rating even as we ve grown so dramatically is a testament to the quality of our management and employees, our insurance products and our agents." The Knights of Columbus also receives the highest rating offered by the A.M. Best Co., A++ (Superior), and is certified by the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association (IMSA) for ethical sales and marketing practices. It is one of only six insurance companies to hold the top rating from both Standard & Poor's and A.M. Best, as well as the IMSA designation. 3 BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits A WAY OF LIFE When was the last time your wife went shopping for the day and left you to mind the children? How would you handle this responsibility, day after day, plus having to work? When I ask this question, I find that most of our members have closed their minds to this possibility. Unfortunately, it does happen, you know. No man likes to place a monetary value on his spouse. But money is the only thing that will give you a fighting chance to keep a semblance of a home for your kids should anything happen to your wife. Many insurance men call it "wife insurance." I like to call it "way of life" insurance. Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you NEWS FROM MARYLAND STATE COUNCIL The Maryland State Family picnic will be held on August 28, 2004 at Patapsco State Park (McKeldin Area). 6 6 GROUNDS It s the middle of summer and the Outside Crew is hard at work! Brother s Elio Del Molin and Giovanni Romano are still methodically removing the damaged and fallen trees from hurricane Isabel. Brother Gus Terrier has been busy beautifying the front area on Forest Glen Road around the new sign. Next time you drive by, stop and take a look! Brother Joe Knapick has joined our crew with clippers in hand. He has been hedging the bushes and tending to the Council s famous Poison Ivy. Welcome aboard Joe! With the addition of Joe to the Crew we regrettably report the removal of newly elected Deputy Grand Knight Pat Bowles. DGK Bowles has more important things to worry about now in his new position. Congratulations Pat, and we ll see you in two years! Last, but not least, Brother Tim Morse. Tim on a daily basis works on the grounds and coordinates all the work performed by the Crew. Next time you see Tim, tell him thanks for a job well done! KNIGHT OF THE MONTH GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Patrick Bowles Last month I spoke about teamwork and how our council needs each of us to work together to accomplish great things. Teamwork, loyalty, honor, integrity, dignity, character, are anchors that brings us closer to God and to those we know and love. They are the fundamental nature of our existence. These values define each of us, exhibited by our words and deeds and continuously judged God by others in all aspects of our lives including our spiritual, professional, social, and family life. This month I would like to speak about honor. One definition on AskJeeves.com defines honor as - A nice sense of what is right, just, and true, with course of life correspondent thereto; strict conformity to the duty imposed by conscience, position, or privilege. We earn honor and it is our duty to demonstrate through our actions our commitment to helping and honoring humankind. We demonstrate this through our programs at the council that extend beyond our membership, such as helping the less fortunate and caring for our own. To do the honorable thing is the right thing and to help our council reach out, you demonstrate on a personal basis one of the reasons for our existence as a council, our programs define the honor and duty that Fathers Rosensteel and McGivney established many years ago by founding our council and order. Your participation in council programs helps to fulfill their visions. I urge each of you to pitch-in and help to the best of you ability, in doing so you will achieve an immense personal satisfaction knowing you helped make the world a better place. Please contact any council officer or one of the program directors to help honor Fathers Rosensteel and McGivney by volunteering to help-out in any of the programs. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who attended and helped at the installation. The event was classy, went without a hitch, and everyone had a lovely time. The teamwork demonstrated by everyone made this event a great accomplishment. I would like to mention a few upcoming events that you need to put on your radar screen. The first is the annual council picnic in August. This is a great family event that provides everyone an opportunity for fellowship and fun, see the Knight Life for details and mark your calendar. A couple of other events that will be upcoming in September are the Past Grand Knights testimonial and the blood drive. Red Smith is always happy to get a pint of your blood to help save the lives of our friends and neighbors. Remember we are always looking for volunteers; however, attending a function is equally important if you cannot help in other ways. In closing, I leave you with this thoughtful quote: Honor is like an island, rugged and without shores; we can never re-enter it once we are on the outside - Nicolas Boileau- Despreaux There is quite a bit that can be said about one of the pillars of #2169, but this person is not impressed with speeches, accolades, awards, bonuses etc. You see him bringing in supplies for the council functions, next he is in the kitchen preparing a gourmet meal far a catered affair. Then he runs up stairs to manage an anniversary party. He is an expert at mixing drinks and along with that can tell some tale tails. Not to be out done with additional duties he takes time out to shoot pool and assists the councils pool team to win a few trophy's. So give a big hand to Stan "The Man " McLeod for being The Knight of the Month.

8 RETIRED MENS CLUB OFFICERS Chaplain...Rev. Joseph Perkins (301) Ext. 23 President....George Gadbois( ) Vice-President......Jim Quinn( ) Secretary......Ed Murray( ) Treasurer......Dick Haller( ) July 2004 marked the start of our new year under the leadership of President George Gadbois. The new member to our executive committee is Dick Haller in the office of Treasurer. We thank the officers of the past year for an excellent job well done under the leadership of Past President Con Heine. The Executive Committee, after an extensive review of the RMC financial status, voted at the July 6 th executive meeting to increase the monthly luncheon fee. The new luncheon fee will be $5.00 starting at the August 24 th luncheon meeting. In studying the cost expenditures leading to the fee increase the following factors were considered: 1. The increase in food cost. 2. The decline in net cooking teams from nine to five in a period of several years. 3. The need to request the help of the KofC Catering Service. 4. The increase of an added surcharge. The increased cost of doing business in the food area and the factors mentioned above precipitated the need for a fee increase to maintain a positive financial balance. The annual membership dues were taken at the July meeting and will continue at the August meeting. The cost is $2.00. Be prepared to show your KofC membership card. to Ed Murray our Secretary at the entrance desk. This is to fulfill the requirement that an RMC member must also be a current KofC Council member. 8 MARYKNIGHTS NEWS OFFICERS President....Kathy Arvedlund V. President.....Jerry Mell Treasurer....Nancy Marchone Secretary....Marguerite Suckacz Historian......Helen Vallone Chaplain..Rev. Gerald Trancone or John Matosian, with Joe Rosik assisting, provided the July luncheon. The luncheon was a great affair and the cooking crew was thanked for a tasty feast. The August Executive meeting will be held on August 3 rd. The next luncheon meeting will be on August 24 th and provided by the KofC Catering Service. We have lost a number of cooking teams and are in need of at least two more teams. If you have any experience in cooking for large groups or in managing a cooking group and wish to help, call either Jim Quinn ( ) our Vice President or George Gadbois at ( ). Have no fear to volunteer, we have excellent people such as Frank Cappachione and others to help you and give ample management guidance in the culinary art. Congratulations to our own and new Grand Knight Pete Bonin from all of us at RMC. GOOD LUCK! Pray for our service men and women who are in harms way every day. They need your prayers so much.. At the August luncheon, Travel Chairman Frank Marchone and Nancy will be taking final payments of $132 per person for the Catskills trip. There may still be room, if you are interested. It is scheduled for September We will be staying at the Villa Roma again. The cost of $532 per person (based on double occupancy) includes transportation, accommodations, all meals from dinner on Monday through breakfast on Friday, complete schedule of daytime activities, entertainment every night, and a hospitality room for playing cards or games. "Summertime and the livin' is easy" doesn't apply to everyone, not Maryknights' President, Kathy Arvedlund nor to the officers and chairmen... they are already busy making plans and programs for the 2004/2005 year. The September meeting will start the year with the usual Mass for Deceased Members. For the following months, Program Chairman, Luanne Flanigan, who presented some great programs last year, is planning to keep us interested and entertained again this year. Stay tuned! A reminder: Wear your Maryknights nametag at the meetings. You might be surprised at how many more people remember your name than at the last meeting when you didn't wear it! Nancy Marchone has a good idea keep your nametag in your purse, it's always handy. President Kathy Arvedlund has asked that we bring school supplies to the September meeting to be donated to the Kennedy Institute. They can use pencils, pencil cases, notebooks, binders, book bags, ballpoint pens, crayons or anything else relating to student needs. Happy news for Margaret and Walter Suckacz' family! A first grandson, michael Daniel, weighing in at 9 lbs. Congratulations Granny and Granpop! Did you know that Father Rosensteel Council has its own Website? It can be reached at A very comprehensive history of the Maryknights is included, which opens with these lines: "As the official Ladies Auxiliary of Father Rosensteel Council No. 2169, Knights of Columbus, the Maryknights are a very important adjunct to the council. The Knights are a fraternal, family, service organization. Therefore, membership in the Maryknights is open to the immediate adult female family members of any member in good standing in Fr. Rosensteel Council. Widows of members in good standing at the time of their death are also welcome. The Maryknights are a strong, vibrant organization in their own right, and the add a terrific amount to the overall strength of Fr. Rosensteel Council." With these noble words echoing in our thoughts, how can we not respond with renewed vigor and enthusiasm for the Maryknights! Jane Johnson FAMILY OF THE MONTH It is a bit difficult to explain what all this family does. For starters, you will see them working in the kitchen, next time they will be in the Columbian Room with himself managing a catered affair and she will be serving beverages. She is also a member of a Friday night kitchen crew. The next time with their two sons and daughterin-law will serving a buffet dinner to 150 or 250 guests and never is there a time their sons don't offer their help or assistants. They have moved to the country but it does not deter them from driving the extra miles to participate at council functions. It is not just at the council you find these people helping others. When you see the Donnellys, Mike, Bonnie, David, Doug and Jamie give them a cheery hello and wish them the best for being the family of the month.
