1 Knight Life Vol. 67, No. 11, November 2001 The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Deadlin e for next Knight Life - November 20th Web site - GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Floyd L. Jarboe The Pick-Three number for October was 168. The Pick-Two number was 12. The Big Game Number was 10, The winners were Fr. Rosensteel Council and the charities the Tootsie Roll Drive supports. Through the efforts of the Tootsie Roll Committee, led by Br. Jerry Tufano, 168 volunteers gave their time to sell thirty cases of Tootsie Rolls. Twelve of the volunteers were Maryknights. The big game was the $10, raised by all of these wonderful people. I am overwhelmed not only at the results but also by the shear number of those willing to get involved in our Council s most important project. This is what we stand for. When we took our First Degree and pledged as Catholic Gentlemen to be charitable, this is what Fr. McGivney had in mind. We had many winning programs in the month of October. We had our best year ever with the incentive raffl e. Thanks to PGK Joe Marks, we sold 5,000 tickets this year and realized $3, for the Council. At the State level we came in third, our best showing in the number of tickets sold. It was a proud contingent of Council Brothers at the Columbus Day Ball when the standings were announced. For those of you who didn t make the bus trip to the Columbus Day Parade on October 7 th, you missed a great fraternal time. We dined on bagels and donuts in the morning. We gathered at Santa Rosa Council before going to the staging area. Fr. Rosensteel Council was the only council to come in their own bus. We do so many good things as Knights to be proud of. But at the beginning of the parade when the Fourth Degree Color Corps lined up and started to march with the strong breeze waving their capes behind them the beauty and dignity brought a lump to my throat and a tear to the eye. My Brothers it was magnificent. We had many (Continued on page 5) DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Tin Cao Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks to all members of District #2, the Car Raffle Ticket Sale to raise fund for the Maryland State Council Scholarship Program, and the Tootsie Roll Campaign to raise fund for God s special children are great successes. Special thanks to all council officers, activity chairmen, and program directors for carrying out your council plan. Congratulations to the newest council, Msgr. Thomas Wells. Welcome to the Order. Best wishes to you for a successful and productive Fraternal Year. November is a very important month, so I would like to bring your attention to several issues, activities that have direct impact on our life as members of the Knights of Columbus: 1. All Saints and All Souls Day: November is the traditional month for special remembrances of our loved ones who left this world, beginning with All Saints Day and All Souls Day and continuing with Council and State Memo- (Continued on page 4) CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Brian McCarthy November is a month laden with feasts of various types. The month begins with the religious feasts of All Saints and All Souls, while the month draws to a close with feasting with family or friends in giving thanks to God for all they receive from God's generous bounty. Lately, I've been giving some time to thinking about the idea of giving thanks to God by feasting. I guess it is appropriate to give thanks to God by enjoying what we have in the same way that the greatest thanks a parent can receive for a gift given to a small child is to see the smile on the face of their child using and enjoying the gift that they have given. On the other hand, it does seem to me that often we hurry through prayer before the Thanksgiving dinner. When I was young it would have been unthinkable for any member of my family to say a grace before meals other than the traditional prayer before mealtime (Continued on page 4)

3 NEWS FROM SUPREME Supreme Knight Addresses Vatican Meeting New Haven, CT In remarks delivered at the Oct. 10 session of the world Synod of Bishops in Rome, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said the family must find new ways to work together with the bishop and the Church if it is to fulfill its role in the new evangelization. He said organizations like the Knights of Columbus can be of service to the Church by helping families realize their vocation more completely. At Pope John Paul II s request, Anderson is serving as an auditor to the synod, which has as its theme, "The Bishop: Servant of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the Hope of the World." The synod convened Sept. 30 at an opening Mass celebrated by the pope at St. Peter s Basilica. Anderson served as a reader at the Mass. The synod will conclude on Oct. 27. Anderson delivered his address during the 15th general session of the synod in the presence of the pope and more than 220 bishops taking part in the meeting. He is the only U.S. layman participating. Besides offering his remarks, in his role as auditor the supreme knight is advising and assisting the bishops in their deliberations. His remarks were made in response to the synod s working document, called the Instrumentum La- BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT SAVING MONEY? 97% of all Ameri cans live paycheck to paycheck. 3% of the populace have disciplined themselves into some type of forced savings programs, which has enabled them to have money availabl e when an opportunity arises. Interesting enough, 97% of us end up working for the mighty 3%. Why? Because you usually need start up funds to form a business, or buy real estate or take a chance on a stock tip. Only those who have saved first, can then invest. The man who invests before he saves is taking a big risk, some would call it a foolish gamble. As your Knights of Columbus Insurance Advisor, I can show your some excellent savings programs. They say a journey begins with a single footstep...why not start your journey to financial independence by calling me today so we can discuss your future, your goals and your needs. My ideas will work for an 18-yearold or a 75-year-old. Call to set up a computerized analysis today. FOURTH DEGREE NEWS Harry Dunkle Vice-Commander The Color Corps will meet November 12, 2000 at Montgomery Council #2323 at 8:00 p.m.. There will be drill practice following the meeting. A memorial mass for Sr. Knights who passed away during the fiscal year 2000/2001 will take place November 15, The mass will start at 7:30 at Old St John s Church across from Rosensteel Council. A short meeting will be held in the church following the mass. A reception will follow at the Rosensteel Council. All widows and guests are invited. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! 4 FAMILY OF THE MONTH The November Family of the Month comes from St. Marks Parish near the University of Maryland. This family is another of the quiet families who help our council in many ways. This family participates by attending n e a r l y every function that is held at the council. They attend all of the dances sometimes bringing their daughter along also. When the council organized the bus trip for the Columbus Day Parade I knew that I could count on The Oswald and Maria Franchi Family to participate. A Knights of Columbus Council needs many different kinds of support. This Family always spports our many different programs. When you see The Franchi's at the Council congratulate them for their help. (Continued from page 1)District Deputy s Report rial Masses. I encourage everyone to participate fully in these memorials to pray for the souls of the departed friends and relatives. 2. K eep Chri s t in Chri stmas Program: Once again, we will soon celebrate our Savior birthday. Would it be wonderful to send KOC Christmas cards to friends and families reminding them that without our savior, we would not be here to celebrate? So let s make an effort to undo the commercialization of our Lord s birthday. 3. Membership Drive: Now that the Car Raffle and Tootsie Roll are over for this year, let s concentrate on membership drive and retention effort. I would like to ask every member of this district to make one phone call to a friend and ask him to join our Order. If all 2213 members of this district do that, I am confident that we will have at least 221 new members (10%). Will that be wonderful for our Order? On behalf of our District Warden, Kevin Jeffords and his wife Shirley, Mary and I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. May God bless you and keep you and your family safe during this Holiday season. 4 PRO-LIFE IS RESPECT LIFE Charles X. Suraci HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH We re talking about the destruction of innocent human persons killed for supposed scientific gain. Oh, and in case you are thrown a curve ball with phrases like preembryo or potential life, just keep in mind both phrases are scientifically inaccurate. There is no such thing as a preembryo. Embryo is a fancy word for a stage inhuman development. That s all. Saying pre-embryo would be like saying pre-person, as if you were something else before you were a person. Absolutely ridiculous. And potential person? We all have the potential to become many things (doctors, lawyers, parents, teachers, etc.). But either you are a person or you are not. And if you are not a person, you must be some other species (like an amphibian or a reptile), and you re not ever going to become a person. Both these phrases are meant to trick us into arguing about things that take us away from the real issue. Human embryonic stem cell research destroy human lives, and it s never justifiable to destroy innocent human life. RU-486 (The Abortion pill) No matter what word or combination of words are used, remember this: RU486 causes the starvation and death of a tiny human person (up to 49 days old). In addition, it has been proven to cause some very dangerous side-effects for the mother including death. Long term effects are unknown. Effects on teenagers are unknown. The only known for certain is that its primary mode of action ends a child s life. MAP (Morning after pill) Not the same as RU-486, these pills are high dosages of birth control pills marketed as pregnancy prevention. The truth is, however, that it can and does work to cause an early abortion if taken by a woman who is pregnant but doesn't know it yet. It s dangerous stuff lethal for children in the womb, and the long term effects to women are unknown. Dates: November 15th K of C Washington Archdiocese Coordinators meeting (7 PM) January 13, 2001 Pro-Life Kickoff Rally with guest, Tony Melendez KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Our November Knight of the Month came to Maryland from New York in the early '60's settling in St. Bernadette Parish. Never a shy kid, it is very entertaining to hear of his exploits with the parish Priests over the years. Our November Knight is the kind of person who will put out every effort he can to do a job correctly. When a program is performed right, the council can benefit in so many ways from the good publicity and actions. In running and organizing the Tootsie Roll campaign this Knight so eloquently described its importance that he brought new members to the last meeting. He got one member to reinstate and he gave people good clear cut reasons to help with this project. If we had twenty more Jerry Tufanos in Fr. Rosensteel Council, we would never be anything but first in all of the programs. He understands the importance of the programs, the priority of our principles and the fortitude to do it right. It is my pleasure to congratulate Br. Jerry Tufano as our November Knight of the Month. (Continued from page 1)Chaplain s Report that was written on our napkin holder. But as years have passed, my family and I have become much more comfortable with more spontaneous prayers which drew upon our everyday life and the things which we were grateful for along with those areas of the world and our life with which we wanted God's help. I'd like to recommend to you, my brother knights, and your families that the Thanksgiving Holiday is a sacred opportunity along with being a civil holiday. It is a time that we can communally acknowledge the part which God plays in our life. It can be a wonderful experience for a wife, a son, a parent, whomever, to hear us speak a prayer of thanksgiving at table to God for the joy that that person has brought into our life. As knights we often recognize our obligation to pray privately, yet our call to Christian witness also calls us to pray within our families as certainly as my ordination calls me to lead in prayer at church. May your prayers and mine be united this Thanksgiving as we enjoy the gifts

MARY S WIDOWS The Madison Restaurant in Olney was the scene of our second luncheon of the year on October 1st. Betty Cullen and Fran McIntyre were hostesses. Forty five ladies were in attendance. Five delicious entrees were offered featuring fish, chicken, beef, veal, and a salad. Marian Ruck, Louise Githens and Lucille Rehling were in charge of the 50/50 which was won by Viola Johnson. Proceeds will be used for prizes at the Christmas party. The next luncheon will be held on Monday, November 5, 2001 at a place to be announced. Ladies will be contacted by members of the telephone committee. As we make clear every month any lady whose husband, at the time of his death, was a member in good standing of Fr. Rosensteel Council is eligible for membership in Mary s Widows and is cordially invited to join us at our monthly luncheons. Out Chairlady for the year is Ruth Ferraro. Her telephone number is November is the month set apart by Holy Mother Church to pray for the souls in purgatory For all those near and dear to us whom Almighty God has called home to Himself we pray: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls rest in peace and may the souls of the faithfully departed through the Mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. William E. The Maryland State Council had three separate contingents and when we passed the reviewing stand the moderator complimented State Deputy Romeo Gauthier on his Knights turning out for the event. Many thanks to Br. Frank Marchone for chairing the events of this weekend and to PGK Celso Barrientos for helping me keep the Rosensteel Banner under control in the wind. On Friday October 19th, we had our Annual Candlelight Procession to the Memorial for the Unborn. Father Dempsey led us in the Rosary while we marched. After the Rosary we proceeded to the St. John s Church for a talk from Fr. Dempsey and Benediction. It was a beautiful ceremony and many thanks to the sixty or so Brothers, Maryknights, family or friends of the council. What was a little distressing were the number of people in the Emerald Room and the Knight s Room who did not come outside for the ceremony. Most of the refreshments were donated by Jarboe Title, Inc. and thanks to the Maryknights and Madam President Marge Fait. Sunday October 21 st, the Council hosted Catholics United for Life for a breakfast meeting after Mass at St. Catherine's. I want to thank my wife Alicia, PGK Dave Morgan, Brothers Gary Chupka, Tim Morse, and Don Brideau without whose help this would never have gone off so smoothly. The Halloween party will be after this goes to press and I will report on it next month. The Soccer Shoot-out was held on Sunday Oct. 21 st at St. Bernadette field. The turnout was enthusiastic but we did not get the numbers we hoped for. We did have winners in five categories. Thanks to Br. Tom Kelly for chairing the event and procuring the certificates to give the kids. Youth Director Bob Ward, Br. Kelly and myself checked the kids in and conducted the cont ests. Many thanks to all whom helped and participated. As busy as October was we have another big one in November. The Month kicks off with the Motown Dance chaired by Br. Pat Bowles on Nov 3. Followed by the Memorial Communion Breakfast on November 4 th, the Maryknight Charity Ball to benefit The Gabriel Project on November 16 th, the Council Smoker is on November 21 st. 6 HOLIDAY BLOOD DRIVE Due to the urgent need for blood around the Christmas holidays, Fr. Rosensteel Council will bw having a Holiday Blood Drive. On Saturday, December 8th, starting at 9 AM until 1 PM, the Council will be having another Blood and Breakfast. If possible, please sign up in advance (we will take walk-ins though). This is not limited to Council members only, so if you have some friends or neighbors, please spread the good word. For reservations, please contact Red Smith at (301) or George Gallagher at (301) YOUTH ACTIVITIES Robert J. Ward Our annual soccer shootout was held on Oct 21 at Saint Bernadette's on a warm, sunny, beautiful afternoon as dozens of children showed up to display their soccer skills. The participants were graded in three categori es (overhead toss, kicking accuracy, and distance kicking) and their scores were combined into one final score for each child. The overall winners were Melissa Riley, Luke Olson, Ashley Wild, Bridget Gilday, and Erin Gilday. All the children were winners though as no one went home empty handed. Each participant was given a prize and a special certi fi cate signed by Grand Knight Floyd Jarboe. Thanks to all who showed up to compete, and to all the parents to helped out. A special thank you goes out to our Soccer Shootout Chairman, Brother Thomas Kelly, for all his hard work in organizing this event. Well done Tom. Please join us on November 2 for our Friday Night/Sundae Night program. Chairperson Beth Ward has planned a special Thanksgiving theme for this month focusing on prayer baskets. This is one event you won't want to miss. Lastly, the entire Youth Activities Team would like to wish you and your family a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving. May God bless you all and I hope to see you at the Council. 6 SURGE WITH SERVICE! GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Frank J. Marchone. Many thanks to Chancellor Bill Draize and PFN Joe Rosick for doing such a good job with the Oktoberfest dance. Those of you who thought it was going to be all "oom pah pah" music missed out on a great dance. Also, many thanks to the tireless and versatile PGK Joe Marks for doing a great job with the Fall Classic Golf Tournament. Come shake a leg (or any other part of your anatomy) at the Motown dance on November 3rd. But don't stay up too late, because the next morning is our Memorial Mass and Communion Breakfast. Another big event in November is the Maryknights' Annual Charity Ball on November 16. The ladies always support us, so let's show our support for them. Check the box elsewhere in this newsletter for details. Saturday, November 17, is the day we distribute food baskets to the needy. Help is needed to prepare the baskets as well as deliver them. The day before Thanksgiving, do all the preliminary work during the day so that you can come to your council home that night and relax with your friends. Things have certainly changed since September 11th. Let us all give thanks to God for our many blessings. Happy Turkey Day! Contact: Tap Selwob Pat Bowles Mike Robertson Motown dance November 3rd 8-till Midnight Hour $10 ea Emerald Room FAMILY ACTIVITIES Jim Coll Be on the lookout for a new crew team to be hitting the kitchen in December. Crew number 9 has some grizzled veteran culinary chefs that promise to be cooking up some exciting dishes for the Friday night crowd. I don t want to drop any names, but they do include a grillmaster and some ex-delta Force brass. Hopefully, the stainless steel table in the kitchen will hold up! Some of the happy participants of this years Soccer shoot out show off their prizes!

7 SURGE WITH SERVICE! CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner ALL SOULS AND MEMORIAL MASS November 2nd is All Souls Day, which is the commemoration of all the faithfully departed. In fact, during the whole month of November we should pray for the deceas ed. Let us all remember our loved ones and the poor souls in purgatory, for they cannot help themselves, but through our prayers you can speed their journey towards God and heaven. Especially let us remember Monsignor Russell, who has been our Chaplain, Associate Chaplain and friend for many years. On November 4th, we will have our annual Memorial Mass to remember our departed loved ones by attending Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist. SUPPORT VOCATIONS We have received donations in the amount of $1,000 which was turned over to the Little Sisters of the Poor. These funds will be used to help defray the costs of Novices and Postulants who have entered the Religious Life. CHRISTMAS CARDS KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS Gene Rich will be selling Christmas cards with religious themes again this year. Show your support for the Council by purchasing your Christmas cards from Gene. These cards make a beautiful gift for your loved ones and friends, so purchase your cards early. ADVENT WREATH KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS The first Sunday of advent is December 3rd. I encourage all Brother Knights to have an advent wreath in their homes. The Advent wreath is especi ally recommended for families with children, in order to mark the time of preparation for the coming of Christ s birth. The Advent wreath is made with four candles arising from a circle of evergreens. It can be placed on a table or it can be hung over it. A simple candle is lit every evening during the week that begins with the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. Two candles are lit during the second week, three during the third, and all four during the final week. PAROCHIAL SERVICE PROGRAM PARISH ROUNDTABLE COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Chancellor William Draize The month of November is already upon us, the cooler weather is here. The summer is but a pleasant memory. I want to express my sincere gratitude to every one who participated in the Tootsie Roll drive this past month. Especially to Jerry Tufano who devoted much of his time and effort to scheduling and coordination of the assignments for distribution of the Tootsie Rolls, and taking the collection of contributions. Also to those that were responsible for counting of monies, and many of the membership that stood the three hour shifts in front of the stores, and those that also collected before and after Masses at St. Bernadette. This was a huge and very success ful effort showing the great charity of our council toward those Handicapped individuals that are very much in need. Again Thanks to everyone. I find Family Night to be one of the most enjoyable events that we have at our council. The membership is given an opportunity to share fellowship with each other, with a very inexpensive dinner and beverage. I think that we should make every effort to protect this event. I highly recommend that everyone read and comply with the Clubhouse Rules posted at the entrance of the game room. Noncompliance may result in the suspension of our beverage license by the County. The October fest Dance seemed to be enjoyed by those that attended. Attendance was down a little, but after conferring with the band leader, she claimed to have many cancellations and very low attendance at the dances they have played since the September 11 th tragedy. Many Thanks to those that stepped in to help at that affair. We all have much to be grateful for. Praise GOD. To date, our committee has raised $1,500 for St. Catherine Laboure grade school Keep up the good work! DONATION OF TOYOTA VAN TO THE COUNCIL The Children's Inn at NIH received a brand new GM van donated by General Motors to replace the 1990 Toyota van with low mileage. The Board of Directors wanted to auction off the Toyota van since the Children's Inn is a non-profit organization. I asked the Board if they would donate the van to Fr. Rosensteel Council for the Youth Program which they approved. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Warden Peter Bonin I would be remiss if the following information was not relayed to you. Under the leadership of Raymond (Red) Smith and George Gallagher, the Council s Blood Drive held September 8, 2001 was an enormous success. A total of 41 units of blood was collected with the donors receiving nourishment from the following Rosensteel chefs: Sheila Emerson, Tony Horner, Diane Lynch, Timothy O Dowd, and Jerry O Neil. The menu consisted of eggs (any style), home fries, sausages, biscuits, orange juice, coffee, and seconds! This drive had the full support of our Grand Knight Floyd Jarboe. It goes without saying that the disaster of September 11, 2001 will go down in history in infamy. To some, 911 will remind them of what transpired on that date. If you missed this blood drive and wish to participate in the forthcoming one, call Red (301) or George (301) The drive will be in preparation for the holiday season. Our prayers and thoughts in the future will be for the victims exposed to anthrax. ROSENSTORKS Congratulations goes out Chris and Joanne Cawley who are the proud parents of a baby girl. Born on October 11, 2001, Malia Ann Cawley weighed in at 4 lb., 9 oz soaking wet! That size should keep her in a number one size diaper at least an extra 4-5 days! INCENTIVE DRIVE A big Thank You goes out to all of the people who sold raffle tickets to help both Fr. Rosensteel Council and the Maryland State Scholarship Fund. This year, #2169 raised $5,000 (which is the first time we hit the 5K mark). We were the third highest Council in the State. I have been the Chairman of this drive for Fr. Rosensteel Council for the last 6 years and Grand Knight Floyd Jarboe has graciously accepted the challenge of taking over the reigns for next year. I m sure he ll do a fantastic job! Thank you again for your support of this most worthy cause. Joe Marks PGK

RETIRED MENS CLUB OFFICERS Chaplain...Rev. Joseph Perkins( ) President.....Bob Brown( ) Vice-President..Con Heine( ) Secretary.George Gadbois( ) Treasurer...Tony Camarano( ) The kitchen/serving crew for the September Luncheon, Alex Matosian and his inspired helpers, provided an excellent meal consisting of roast pork, au gratin potatoes, green beans almondine, rolls and butter, and ice cream for desert. This, combined with the Bonin/Koski/Moore team serving libations from behind the bar, resulted in a very satisfying experience for all those in attendance. Larry Fagan was back to sell the tickets so we could have a chance to strike it rich. In recognition of the fact that Cal Ripken's final game was only a few days hence, and in tribute to Cal as a role model for his work ethic, his devotion to family, and his efforts to help youngsters, our resident stand-by chaplain, Bill Fenton, traded his collar for a bas eball cap and treated us to a heart felt rendition of "Casey at the Bat". Unfortunately, Cal could not be in attendance. Many of the members of the RMC were very busy on Rosensteel Council projects during October. A too-long-to-include-here list of folks recruited by Jerry Tufano worked on the Tootsie Roll Drive, collecting, counting, or feeding the masses. A stalwart crew showed up for Painting Days at the Council on Oct. 8 and 9. Thanks to RMC members Pete Bonin, Bob Brown, Frank Capacchione, Gerry Cosgrove, Harry Dunkle, Dick Haller, Wally Horner, Gordon Johnson, and Art Namoski, along with Terry Hunter and Ralph Valone, a lot of white paint was spread around. RMC member Don Brideau was there to provide lunch to the hungry crew after the brushes were cleaned. There is still some painting to be finished up some day in the near future. Travel Chairman Frank Marchone tells me the trip to Mackinac Island for June 8-14, 2002, is not yet full. The cost will be $835 per person and will include six breakfasts, six dinners, lunch at the Grand Hotel (on the island), carriage tour of the island, Henry Ford Museum, city tour of Frankenmuth ("Little Bavaria"), Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, transportation and 6 nights accommodations (2 enroute, 2 in Michigan, and 2 on Mackinac Island). Call Frank or Nancy at if you want to sign up. A happy band of RMC travelers spent several days at Mt. Airy Lodge in the Poconos in mid-september. (continued) 8 (RMC continued) The Boccie court(?) got a good workout, we learned a lot about Jim Thorpe(the person and the place), and some people are still talking about that golf course. After a grueling morning at the Glenmont Lanes, the RMC bowlers came back to the Council on OCT 11 to enjoy the Fall luncheon prepared by Frank and Nancy Marchone. Now we're looking forward to the Christmas luncheon scheduled for DEC 13. We do get some bowling done in between luncheons. In case you haven't heard, a goodly number of RMC members and others get together for Cards Night at the Council. This usually happens on Thursday or Friday night(depending on prior commitments for other Council or catered affairs). The games include Bridge, Pinochle, and Canasta (and socializing).if you would like more information and scheduling details, call Warren Spurr at (301) The RMC monthly luncheon for this month will be on Tuesday, NOV 27, at 12:15PM. We have been very fortunate to enjoy some excellent luncheons prepared by our volunteer head chefs and crews of volunteer helpers, but we seem to be calling on these volunteers a lot more frequently these days. We need to get some new folks involved in this process. If you would like to join a crew, or start your own crew, please give me a call and we'll get you started. Continue to remember in your prayers the victims of terrorism and their extended families, and pray for our military and civilian personnel as they work to counter this horrible force.
