Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 69, No. 8, August 2003 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION William J. Draize With the installation of our Council Officers being an event of the past. Now comes the work in all the various programs. First I want to express my gratitude for all of those that assisted in making the ceremony a great success, for the cooks, servers, bartenders, Cardinal O Boyle Assembly Color Corp. of the 4 th Degree, The Master of Ceremonies PGK Joseph Marks, Dignitaries, and all of those that served in assistance with the Installation Mass at the Church, I especially want to thank everyone for being there in attendance. Arlene and I were totally overwhelmed at the large turn out for the Installation celebration. With the two new Chair Officers of the Council I know that everyone will get behind them and give them the support they will need. Our next up and coming event will be the Council Picnic at the Walter Reed Army Hospital Annex in Forest Glenn. My friends, security will be stringent. Make sure that you are in possession of current Identification. This event is always a great and fun time, especially for all members of the family. We have some of our greatest grilling specialist waiting to prepare a culinary delight, especially for you. For our youngest members of the Council Family I have some excellent news. In my travels I came across the ICE CREAM SUNDAE LADY! She said that in the month of September she is coming back to tell some stories of Faith and, and, AND make some great Ice Cream Sundaes on a Family night, maybe once a month. Isn t that Great!! I can t wait More on this later! Please Pray for our Sick and Deceased and especially for our Military Service Personal Overseas. Maybe it would a good thing if we would remember to write to them and let them know that you love them and care, it can get lonely not hearing from home. GOD BLESS! Deadline for next Knight Life - August 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Joseph M. Feakes Its August already, have you made your plans to help your council achieve Star Council? You say you haven t. You say there s nothing you can do. Wrong!!!. There is a lot we can all do to improve our councils. Don t rely on the Grand Knight or other council officers or committee chairmen. You take the lead. What are some of the things you can do? Get involved in an activity or start a new one. If there is a project you think your council should or could be doing, say something. In our installation ceremony we point out that each man in the council has a unique talent that makes him different from everybody else. The extent that each of us uses that talent will reflect on the success of the council. Recruit a new member. There are very likely a thousand eligible men in your parish who you could ask to join our order. Some will say no, some will say yes. You will never know which is which unless you ask. New members are the future of the council. Don t put the future of your council in danger. MEMBERSHIP, MEMBERSHIP, (Continued on page 2) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Joseph Perkins On August 15 th we will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. This got me thinking about the many feasts in the course of the Church Year having to do specifically with Mary the Mother of Jesus: January Mary, Mother of God; February Our Lady of Lourdes; March The Annunciation; May The Visitation and Immaculate Heart of Mary; July Our Lady of Mt. Carmel; August The Dedication of Mary Major Basilica in Rome, The Assumption and The Queenship of Mary; September The Birth of Mary and Our Lady of Sorrows; October Our Lady of the Rosary; November The Presentation of Mary in the Temple; December The Immaculate Conception this is quite a line up of feasts! This does not include the many times Mary appears in the gospels when she speaks, is spoken to or is simply present at one of the great events of her Son s ministry. This listing shows the important place Mary has in Our Church and hopefully in our hearts.

3 News from Supreme KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS URGES SUPREME COURT TO REVIEW PLEDGE OF AL- LEGIANCE UNDER GOD CASE Friend of the court brief says 9th Circuit Court's decision at war with American tradition NEW HAVEN, CT < The Knights of Columbus, which played a key role in persuading Congress in the early 1950s to include the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case of United States of America v. Newdow. In that case a divided panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared the pledge unconstitutional. "Patriotism, one of our guiding principles, was the motive behind our actions 50 years ago in getting the words Under God added to the pledge," said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. "Our actions today are similarly guided." Beginning in 1951 the Knights spearheaded a national effort to amend the pledge. Congress voted to add the words "under God" in 1954 and President Dwight Eisenhower signed the law on Flag Day, June 14, "Americans responded to the events of 9/11 through prayer and a resurgence of patriotism," Anderson said. "Truly it could be said that we were One nation under God. The Knights of Columbus will lead efforts to prevent yet another attempt to remove any reference of God from public life." The Knights brief, filed by the Washington-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, states that the 9th Circuit's decision threatens not only one patriotic rite and one particular federal statute" but "challenges the American principle that fundamental rights are inalienable by the State precisely because they exist prior to the State." The brief contends that "since the Declaration of Independence was written, our national ethos has held that we have inalienable rights that the State cannot take away, because the source of those inalienable rights is an authority higher than the State." The pledge, like the Declaration of Independence, "is a statement of political philosophy, not of BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits DID YOU KNOW? => That at this writing the average 5 year C. Suraci The use of stringed beads for keeping track of prayers can be traced back to prechristian times. The Rosary itself originated with the ancient practice of the recitation of the 150 Psalms (the Psalter on strings of wooden beads by clergy and monks in monasteries. Eventually, the practice evolved from the recitation of the 150 Psalms to 50 Our Fathers divided into groups of 50. They became known as paternoster beads, A phrase of contemplation about Jesus and Mary was later added to each bead, thus making the Rosary both a contemplative and vocal form of prayer. The Hail Mary soon took its place alongside the Our Father with the Glory Be, and there eventually become a "parallel Psalter consisting of 150 Hail Marys with 150 points of contemplation. During the latter part of the I 2th century and early 13th century, St. Dominic ) experienced great difficulty in fighting a widespread heresy- (the belief that there existed two supreme beings: a good God and a bad god). St. Dominic become distressed that his preaching alone was not successful in fighting this heresy. The Blessed Mother appeared to him and instructed him to pray the Marion Psalter in order to combat Albigensionism. The Rosary continued to develop, and centuries later in 1569, Pope Pius V officially dedicated each set of 50 beads to different mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious, each depicting different stages in the life of Christ and His Mother. Today the Rosary is still one of the most powerful forms of prayer against sin, vice and heresy. Pro-lifers can confidently rely upon Christ and the intercession of His Blessed Mother in fighting grievous sin of abortion through the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary! 5 A TRIBUTE TO 50 YEARS OF SERVICE TO FR. ROSENSTEEL COUNCIL This is the true story of a man who has served faithfully Fr. Rosensteel Council for more than half a century. In order to describe, in a practical way, just what Frank Marx did for his Council these many years, we have used the following chronological presentation. 1950: Frank became a Knight of Columbus in October 1950 at Fr. Rosensteel Council and has had a continuous membership in this Council for more than 52 years. He is now an Honorary Life Member. 1952: Frank was elected a member of the Council Building Association and became its first Reservation Chairman. The Building Association became a critical part of the functioning of the Council because of its ability to provide funds to the Council by renting the facility to various outside groups. Interestingly, his first client was the Tall Cedars of Lebanon -- a Masonic organization which provided an annual $400 fee for several parties a year. This type of donation has significantly increased for the past 35 years. 1955: Frank was a key organizer of a very successful 10-team Council Bowling League that provided fun and healthy competition for the next 20 years before shutting down. The value of having a bowling league, however, was not forgotten after it was terminated in 1975.In 198 1, when Frank was President of the Retired Men's Club, he was responsible for organizing a Mixed Bowling League. The league started with 6 teams in 1981 and has grown today to 16, with 5-person teams :Frank was elected Grand Knight in 1957 and continued his efforts to increase the growth and strength of Fr. Rosensteel Council. Two of his principal contributions during this period as Grand Knight were the following: (a) The Council was given a Supreme Council Award (the equivalent of a National Award) and a Maryland State Award for exceptional leadership in introducing new members to the Knights of Columbus; and (b) (b) Another Supreme Council Award was presented to Fr. Rosensteel Council for an outstanding performance by its young boys and girls (the Squires and the Squirettes) in support of Council I activities. The Council Squirettes program was recognized by LIFE magazine with a full page picture of the Squirettes' officers. This Youth Program of Fr. Rosensteel was recognized as one of the best programs of its type in the State of Maryland. Around 1950,, a program of monthly dances had been instituted, with a theme assigned to each dance. It was in the year 1958 that Frank became a major leader in the start-up of the most popular dance of all. This was Anthracite Night, where a non-stop period of dancing was the attraction. The reason for the establishment of this event was the fact that the Council had a very large group of members who were born and raised in the Northeastern Pennsylvania area. What started as a 40-person affair graduated to a full house event in the third year. This wonderful activity ran for 23 years with Frank acting as the Master of Ceremonies throughout. In addition to the usual polkas, foxtrots, waltzes and jitter-bug displays, each event featured a nostalgic memory presentation of the many wonderful small towns which formed the Anthracite region. Frank, as part of his Master of Ceremony activities, initiated each current Grand Knight an honorary Anthraciter :During this period of some 43 years, Frank continued his major contributions to his Council. In 1960, he volunteered to serve as the Saturday afternoon bartender in the Knight's Room. He has been there ever since. Among his myriad of duties as the "Senior Bartender" was the conduct of a "Bartenders' Training Program." Many a Knight -- both young and old -- who served at the bar, learned how to make the Knight's Room the warm and congenial place it is today. In 1962 (and continuing to date) a major source of revenue for the Council was the Bingo Program founded by Frank. This program, while providing major financial contributions to the Council, furnished a wonderful opportunity for residents (principally senior citizens) to enjoy a pleasant "Knights' out." In 1963,, Frank was selected as District Deputy. This role required his serving as Counselor to a number of K of C Councils in Montgomery County in their efforts to maintain and increase the development of stronger organizations. The selection of District Deputy was made in recognition of Frank's outstanding, long-term performance at Fr. Rosensteel Council. While District Deputy, Frank was one of the founding members of Bishop McNamara Chapter of Grand Knights in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. This Chapter of Grand Knights was formed to provide current Grand Knights advice and counsel in their roles as leaders of their Councils. The idea of this new organization spread quickly and now numbers about 40 Councils in the adjoining Counties. Frank served as Chapter President in : When describing Frank's contributions, it is most difficult to identify any one program or activity as being "most important." His current activity, involving the collection of Council documents, however, might be pretty close to being so categorized. The project was started by Frank in 1995 and, working with little help, slowly developed into a respectable collection of articles that could form the basis for a fine Archives Room in this great Council. Among the many current contents in the collection are: *Every Council Meeting Minutes from December 20, 1920 to the present time (with the exception of the period). Copies of every "Knight Life" since its original issue in July of Group photos that go back to The continuing effort of developing what could become a real Council Archives is still one of Frank's "personally assigned" duties. Frank Marx can most certainly be described as one of a very small and special group of members of the Knights of Columbus who has served his Council in the dedicated way presented here. 5

6 FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our family this month is one that everyone is very familiar with. It is rare that when you set foot inside the Council, either one or both are working, or attending a function. They are members of St. John the Evangelist Parish, and both serve as Eucharistic Ministers. She is very active in the Maryknights, and has served as President of our Ladies Auxiliary Organization. He is a past President of the Building Company, and has just been reelected as President of the Building Company for a second term, and served in the Chairs as an Officer of the Council. Also they are a part of the family of Bingo workers. They live in Olney, MD. Please extend congratulations to our immediate Past Grand Knight and First Lady Frank and Nancy Marchone. To follow in the footsteps of men who left a legacy of diligence, and devotion. The diligence of hard working, reliable men who persevered in through hardships to care for his family. Devotion to the church and the community around him. Catholic men such as Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Verzanno and the list go on. To become a part of an organization that can be called The Catholic Anti Defamation League. Does anyone remember that you spoke to them today? The day is almost over, and its toiling time is through: Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Can you say tonight in parting with the day that s slipping fast That you helped a single person of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said? Does the one whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? Did you waste the day or use it? Was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discontent? As you close your eyes in slumber, do you think that God will say: You have earned one more tomor-

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Chancellor Patrick Bowles Council activities are a major function of our council that creates lifetime friendships as we work together and contribute to the well-being of our council and one another. When I look at all of the planned activities for this fraternal year I have to look back to see what our council has accomplished over the years, it is truly amazing what we can accomplish as a team. This year is no different - Worthy Grand Knight Bill Draize has entrusted me to lead council activities and by working together, we will have another banner year. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed their time and effort to our council. July has been a busy month; we had one of the most well attended installation of officers in recent memory. The installation was inspiring, went without a hitch, and was first class all the way. Also in July the Rosensteel anglers were at it again as they ventured out on the bay to bring home over 40 fish. As usual, we cooked the fish on the grill and everyone at the council had a grand feast. There may be future a fishing trip in September or October. I would also like to mention how our brother Knights showed their respect for and helped at Brother Jerry O Neil s funeral. Jerry was an inspiration, a worker and a major contributor to the council. When our brother Knights are there in a time of need it demonstrates what the Knights of Columbus are about. We have some great upcoming events, the picnic in August, the crab feast in September, the PGK testimonial to name a few. Be sure to read the Knightlife for details on these and other events. Bingo players needed, please be sure to tell your friends and family that every Wednesday night we have bingo. Bring yourself, bring your family, bring your friends - come out and have a great time and you could be a winner. ATTENDANCE DRAWING AT AUGUST BUSI- NESS MEETING: $110 7 SURGE WITH SERVICE! KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Our Knight of the month for August is a very quiet gentleman, and I can t remember not seeing him at a Council meeting. He is always there supporting especially those, that can not defend themselves. No, He is not a member of the legal system as we are commonly familiar with, but he is still an advocate. He puts in a great deal of time composing his material, and arranging for speakers, and finding musicians, for the one event that is his passion in support of our Catholic Faith. He is a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, but attends Blessed Sacrament Parish and sings in the choir, and is a cantor there. He lives in Kensington and has been a long time member of Father Rosensteel Council. He is currently the Chairman of our pro-life committee, and is a Council Officer serving as an Outside Guard. When you see Brother Charles Suraci please congratulate him. The Natural Choice is Life CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary We celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. Jesus, Mary and Joseph pray for us... MARY S WIDOWS In 1851 Horace Greeley, a prominent American newspaper publisher, popularized the phrase, Go West, young man. Over a century and a half later, on July 7, 2003, Mary s Widows switched the direction slightly. In their 21st century limousines they motored North on US 29 until it intersected with Rt. 198 in Burtonsville. There, in the cool confines of the main dining room of Seibel s Restaurant on a sweltering hot day they enjoyed their luncheon. Our newly elected Chairlady, Lois Devlin, presided at her first luncheon meeting. Hostesses for the affair were Mary Schaaf and Mary Holden. Thirty ladies were present. Marian Ruck and Dot Furnary took charge of the 50/50 which was won by Peggy Lerch. The ladies had a choice of three entrees; salmon and mashed potatoes, stir fried chicken over pasta and spaghetti and meat balls. Remember, any lady whose husband, at the time of his death, was a member in good standing of Fr. Rosensteel Council is eligible for membership in Mary s Widows and is cordially invited to join us at our monthly meetings. The next meeting will be on Monday, August 4, 2003 at a place to be announced. William E. Fenton, Sr., PFN Coordinator

RETIRED MENS CLUB OFFICERS Chaplain...Rev. Joseph Perkins (301) Ext. 23 President.....Con Heine ( ) Vice-President...George Gadbois( ) Secretary......Ed Murray( ) Treasurer.....Jim Quinn( ) July marked the first month under the direction of the newly elected Officers led by incoming President Con Heine. Retiring Grand Knight Frank Marchone and his wife Nancy headed a kitchen crew, which provided a real sparkling Fourth of July fare. Dues for the new year was being collected by Secretary Ed Murray with assistance from George Gadbois. President Heine pointed out that the August Luncheon on the 26th marks a real milestone for the Retired Men's Club - it's the 25th Anniversary. In addition to the regular August Luncheon, the Club plans to have a 25th Anniversary cake and to honor all of the Past Presidents. The Retired Men's Club was formed in the Spring of 1978, and the Constitution and By- Laws adopted on August 8, Dick Draper was elected as the first Club President, and the following historical information is provided by founding President Draper: The Club was formed to provide senior Council members some type of day time programs, so that they could continue to feel that they were still part of Fr. Rosensteel Council. It was decided that wives of members should be admitted as Associate members. Widows of deceased Council members, whose husbands were in good standing at the time of their death, were also invited to participate in this family organization Early attendance at Meetings was small but grew steadily as word of the Club's activities spread. Initially, meetings were held in the Emerald Room and at first attendees brought their own lunches. Within a few months an in-house Luncheon program was started and today it is a hallmark of the Club, because of the hard working and dedicated Head Chefs and their crews. Soon, outside activities were planned, beginning with a one day bus trip. More trips developed as the Club matured. Over the years a multifaceted Travel program has become a great achievement and has contributed to the health and enjoyment of the Club Members. The readings of Travel Chairman Marchone's current report of up-coming events will attest to the success of this Travel Program. In addition to the Travel program an intensive R.M.C. Bowling League, occupies the interest of some 100 or more of its members. At the August luncheon, Travel Chairman Frank Marchone will be collecting the final payment of $180 per person from those of you going on the Catskills trip in September. Frank will also be taking signups for a Christmas trip to Wheeling, WV It Is scheduled for December 3-5. The cost of $364 per person includes two nights accommodations, two full breakfasts, two full dinners, a guided tour of Oglebay's Festival of Lights, Wheeling's City of Lights, Wheeling Downs Dog Racetrack and Gaming Center, tour of Steubenville, and a visit to the Brooke Glass Factory. A deposit of $200 per person is due at the time of signup. The Retired Men's Club has been consistently able to provide donations in the form of money, equipment, and the physical assistance of its members to the Council. The Club recognizes the help and steadfast cooperation of the Grand Knight and Council Officers over the ensuing years. With such a successful past 25 years as an arm of our great Council, the Retired Men's Club looks forward to the next 25 years of contributing to the physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of its members for the Good of the Order. 8 MARYKNIGHTS NEWS OFFICERS President...Marge Fait Damarfait@juno.com Vice-President...Mary Cosgrove Gbkvl1985@aol.co Chaplain..Rev.
