1 Knight Life The Official Publication of Father Rosensteel Council #2169 Vol. 66, No. 8, August 2000 GRAND KNIGHT S STATION Celso S. Barrientos We had a solemn and memorable Installation of Officers. It was a fitting tribute to the officers who volunteered their services to lead our Council this Columbian Year. There were so many people who contributed immensely to the success of the affair. The list is long and I am liable to miss somebody by listing them. I would just say to all, I am deeply grateful. However, permit me to mention three individuals who have contributed generously to the success of the affair. Lecturer Ross Baccanari has done everything needed and all that I asked for. PGK Joe Marks has given me guidance, support and advice for a successful installation. My dear wife, Hope has taken on herself to go all out preparing and executing to make the affair a memorable one. She worked harder this time compared to that when our daughter got married. Our programs and activities are running smoothly. I thanked all the directors and chairmen who attended our Council meeting on July 13 and the State Council s Workshop on July 25 at Good Counsel. I am sure we all learned some new things to make our work successful. August is a rather quiet month. But we should not let the heat of summer keep us from our continued pursuit of excellence by getting more members and making our members more active. Keep in mind that active members are the core of our fraternal activities. And most importantly, active members don t dropout. We have one big happening in August Father Rosensteel s Annual Family Picnic. It will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2000 beginning at Noon. It will be held at our usual venue, Walter Reed Annex Picnic area. Brother Tony Horner, our Picnic (Continued on page 7) Deadline for next Knight Life - August 20th DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT Tin Cao And so one month has passed for this Fraternal Year; what have we done for our Mother Church, Order, Council, Community, Family, and Youth. As a Knight, we all should ask ourselves that question. I have attended the first meeting of all councils in District 2. And I am so proud to tell that there is no other organizations do more and for so many as you have done every day through the many programs and initiatives that I have heard and learned over the past month. Gentlemen, it is all up to you to make things work. To the brothers whom I have not met, please come or come back to join us. We need you to help us to carry on the wonderful dream that Fr. McGiney once had. As I mentioned in my July report, membership and retention are high on my list. I would like to ask that each one of you carry an index card with the phone numbers of several Knights with you at all times. Call them if you do not see them at meetings, functions, or at church. Brothers, they are waiting for your call. Even if, you just call to say hello. August is a busy month, and there are many activities that you can do and participate. I would like to list just a few: 1) The Incentive Raffle Ticket For every dollar (Continued on page 3) Web site - CHAPLAIN S REPORT Rev. Brien McCarthy This month the Holy Father will welcome the youth of the world to his home diocese, Rome. The past 14 World Youth Days, it was the youth who welcomed the arrival of the Pope for the celebrations, instructions and liturgies that comprise these special days of sharing the faith among those who are between the ages of 16 and 36 years old. But this year it is John Paul II who welcomes the participants to the city of Peter and the early martyrs of our Catholic Faith. As humanity stands on the threshold of the third millennium, the Holy Father has chosen the theme: "The Word became flesh, and dwelt amongst us". The past World Youth Days have proven to be opportunities for young people to deepen their relationship with the Lord Jesus and His church, as they share and deepen their faith together with the Holy Father. 3 NEWS FROM SUPREME Knights Post Record Volunteer Hours in 1999 According to Fraternal Survey New Haven, CT The Knights of Columbus, at all levels of the organization, volunteered a record high 55.3 million hours of personal service to the Catholic Church, community projects and youth programs in Knights also reported raising and contributing $108.9 million to charitable efforts in The figures are based on reports of activity received from 67 percent of Knights of Columbus councils, Fourth Degree assemblies, Columbian Squires circles and other jurisdictional entities responding to the Knights' annual Survey of Fraternal Activity. Of the $108,954,410, $90.7 million was raised by local councils and state councils, which donated directly to charitable causes of their own choosing. The remaining $18.1 million was given by the Supreme Council and Knights of Columbus-designated funds from the Roman Catholic fraternal order's New Haven, Conn., headquarters. In announcing the results, Supreme Knight Virgil C. Dechant congratulated state and local leaders for their efforts. "The things we do for the Church and our communities could not be done without grassroots support and belief in the principles on which we were founded," he said. Dechant attributed the slight decline from the $110.7 raised and donated in 1998 to larger than usual contributions by the Supreme Council that year when it created several new scholarship funds for children of members. He also noted that the number of units responding to the 1999 survey was down by 6 percent from 1998, when 73 percent reported. Church Support Assistance to Church groups such as parishes, schools, religiouseducation programs, seminaries/seminarians, vocations, promotional efforts and miscellaneous Church projects totaled $33.6 million in 1999 and $301.9 million in aggregate since In addition to rendering 55.3 million hours of volunteer service, members also gave a record 8.9 million hours of their time in such "fraternal services" as attending meetings, functions and other activities of the Order. Knights also made 5.6 million visits to the sick and bereaved in BRIAN GRAHAM Knights of Columbus Family Financial Fraternal Benefits ARE VALUES IMPORTANT? The Knights of Columbus and their INSURANCE PROGRAM think so. Thousands of our policyholders enjoy the peace of mind knowing that our profits go to help our Church, the community, the sick, the elderly, the unborn, etc. Many well know commercial insurance companies sponsor organizations that conflict with our Catholic values. So if you have an insurance need why not bring it to "your" value organization -- the Knights of Columbus? Not only do you get one of the very best plans of protection in the entire insurance industry but also help the Order to continue with our support system to help those that need it the most. Call your Brother Knight Council Field Agent today and ask for a general review of your insurance needs. His help is only a phone call away. (Continued from page 1)Chaplain s Corner As I make the final preparations for the group of young Deaf people that I will be joining for this pilgrimage, I ask that you keep the Holy Father and the youth of the world in your prayers during these days, August As Knights, specially dedicated to service to the Holy Father, our church, and Christian families, I invite you to join us spiritually in this Holy Celebration of Faith, Hope, and Love. SQUIRE NEWS This is the beginning of a new year for the Squire calendar. Catholic boys from age ten until their eighteenth birthday are eligible to join. We meet on the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM. The results of the elections from the July meeting are: Chief Squire : Tom O Neil Deputy Squire: Victor Policarpio Bursar : David Rinonos Notary : Rohan Marshall Our guest speaker in July was John Ransom, who gave a talk about submarines. Our August tenth meeting, we will have Guest speaker Pat Kilner Jr., to talk about the stock market. Saturday, August 19th is Car Wash Day at Fr. Rosensteel Council from 10 AM to 2 PM. Donation is $4. Deputy Grand Knight Jarboe has offered his Ocean City place to the Squires for August 26th and 27th. (Continued from page 1)District Deputy s Report you sold, 60 cents will go to your council and 40 cents will benefit the Maryland State Council Scholarship Program. This is the best way to raise much-needed fund for your council and help disadvantaged children to get a good catholic education. 2) The Tootsie Roll Campaign Together, let s make a difference in the life of so many children with special needs God s special children. I ask that you sign up with your council Tootsie Roll Chairman now to reserve a place in this October campaign. 3) Columbus Day Ball This is a wonderful way to treat yourself and your lady/friend to a wonderful evening of good food and good music. Please contact your GK for more information. 4) Maryland KOC Jubilee Pilgrimage in Baltimore on September 9, Cardinal Keeler of Baltimore is inviting all of you to attend this special occasion. There are many more activities waiting for you. Gentlemen, be all you can be as a Knight today, tomorrow and forever. Let s go out and make a difference. Let s build a better tomorrow for our children and their children. And we can do that now as a Knight of Columbus. Finally, I would like to leave you with one thought. When you received your First Degree, you received a special gift from our Blessed Mother the rosary. Do you still treasure that special gift? My dear brother knights, let s pray the rosary constantly to pray for the end to abortion. The future is in your hand. May God bless you and your family always.

4 RETIRED MENS CLUB OFFICERS Chaplain.Rev. Joseph Perkins( ) President...Jack Rutledge( ) Vice-President...Bob Brown( ) Secretary....Con Heine( ) Treasurer...Tony Camarano( ) Elections were held at the June luncheon and the following were elected to office. President, Jack Rutledge--Vice President, Bob Brown-- Treasurer, Tony Camarano-- Secretary, Con Heine. Who said the retiree's are not a hot bunch?? At the June luncheon the members were evacuated by the Fire Dept. as a security measure. There was an electrical shortage in a circuit breaker. The members who paid for lunch and did not return that evening will not be charged for the next luncheon attended. The decision was made to donate the 50/50 to charity. As a result Rosensteel council and the State Charity Funds shared a $62.00 pot. At the request of several people, Travel Chairman Frank Marchone will charter a bus to take people to the annual dinner at Holy Angels Church in Avenue, Maryland. It is scheduled for Sunday, September 3 (the day before Labor Day). Church representatives have not finalized details yet, but as soon as Frank gets them he will start taking signups. If you are interested in going, call Frank at If you haven't noticed, take note of the new lectern donated by the Retired Men's Club. The officers stations were also refinished at our expense. The fine work was done by Frank Marchone. In keeping with the by-laws, a donation of $ was given to the council leaving an adequate balance in the treasury for the operation of the next year, and are happy to announce that the dues will remain at $2.00 and lunch at $4.00 per person. There will be a meeting of all Retired men's Club Bowling League members at 1:00 P. M. August 10, 2000 at the council. A review of the by-laws and team assignments will be discussed. Be there and bring a friend to join. Bowlers and subs are needed. Travel plans for the Catskill and New York Trips are moving along. At this writing there are a few spaces still open. See Frank or Nancy Marchone. We have cooking crews for the months of July- August-September-October-February-and April. There is no problem getting helpers but top dogs are needed to plan the meals.. Please step forward and share one of your favorite meals by volunteering your talent with us. See Bob Brown with any questions. Jack Rutledge -President IN PRO-LIFE IS RESPECT LIFE THE EYES OF THE CREATOR I see two eyes, I see two ears, I see a mother, wiping away her tears. I see a child who could have been. Why must this mother commit such a sin? In the Bible it syas, Thou shall not kill. But this mother has decided to follow her will. Why destroy an unborn child in such a way? Why not let this baby stay? Now this mother leaves behind Memories she never wants to find. Now she torments herself about the child She ll never see, And every day she thinks, How would my baby be? Would my child be happy? Would it be sad? Would it be good? Would it be bad? All these questions, she needs to know, But the pain and suffering just seem to grow. Now she thinks and feels regret For that child she never met. And not a single day goes by That she doesn t mourn and cry. Or think about what she has done To her baby girl or son. Debran Rodriguez Age 14 FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our Family of the Month lives and breathes the spirit of the Knights of Columbus. Although they have been a member of the Order for a relatively short time, they have already left their mark by being involved in many activities. The mother who is a nurse is the chairwoman of the Ways and Means Committee of the MaryKnights and she participates in many Council activities. Their only child is going to Kennedy High School this Fall and she too has been helping out at the Council during many occasions. The father works in the social services area. He is one of Father Rosensteel s avid recruiters, having brought in many members. He works part time at the security office of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. He is doing his second term as recorder and chairman of recruitment for the Council. Meet our Family of the month: The Panizales family, Rodolfo, Tess, and Christia. KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Our Knight of the Month for August is the one that you may truly call a Golden Knight. 7 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Warden William J. Draize As our new fraternal year begins I would like to express my gratitude for your support in electing me Warden, in this endeavor I shall try to do my best. Now as August begins, we turn to our annual Council picnic. The date by the way, will be Sunday, August 27th, at Walter Reed Annex in Forest Glen. Brother Tony Homer will once again chair this fabulous event. Should you see Tony in your travels, in and around the Council, offer to give him a helping hand. For those Brother Knights that have recently joined the Council, this is a yearly Family event where we get together and enjoy each others friendship, and it is sponsored by your Council. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. One other activity that is consistent, is the Battle for the Right to Life. Our Supreme Court has recently handed down some decisions that are very contrary to Gods Laws. I firmly believe that Prayer is our only alternative left to put an end to this horror. Every Saturday morning, at 8:00, Three Mysteries of the Rosary are said in front of Cygma Clinic on Farragut St. in Kensington, MD.. We ask that the Blessed Mother intercedes to her Son on behalf of the innocent Unborn. Please Come and join our Prayer Group.. CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner I have been selected to be the Director of Church Activities for the coming year. I appreciate the Grand Knight s confidence in choosing me to head up these activities. I am looking forward to working closely with the officers and chairmen to promote a successful year. This is going to be a challenging year for all of us, especially with new programs being considered to gear up the Church Activities. Detailed information on the new programs will be forthcoming in the next several months. GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU ALWAYS. SUPER BOWL SIGNUPS AT COUNCIL PICNIC AUGUST 27TH SURGE WITH SERVICE! (Continued from page 1)Grand Knight s Report Chairman has been preparing for everybody s enjoyment since after last year s picnic. Tony will be assisted by the traditional co-chairman of the Picnic, Father Rosensteel s Warden Bill Draize. Tony and Bill need your help. There are so many things to do before, during and after the Picnic. If you can help in anyway, please let Tony and Bill know. If you have any suggestions for a new activity during the Picnic, please share it with us. We are launching our Incentive Car Raffle this month. The Incentive Chairman, PGK Joe Marks will be sending each one of you envelope with ten raffle tickets. Please buy them or sell them. Return the stubs and the money to Joe, so you can be entered for the drawings for the car and other prizes. If you need more tickets, call Joe or stop by the Council. Please support this very worthwhile activity of the Order. I will just list some of the forthcoming events, since we have space shortage this month. Look for the souvenir program listing for the Columbus Day Ball. Volunteer to give blood during our drive in early September. Give blood and get breakfast. Finally, just remember: It is in giving that we receive... GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Floyd Jarboe Congratulations to all of the newly installed officers. It is very gratifying to see so many age groups represented in our special Fraternity of Officers. The Installation of Officers is a special time, the birth of a new Fraternal Year. It is a time of excitement and promise and our hope that we reach our potential for carrying out our duties as Knights of Columbus. As usual our Council looked great for the event and special thanks to Br. Ross Baccanari for cooking our delicious meal. The day was made very special by our distinguished guests from the State and District. We have many events coming in August. Most notable is the Council Picnic on August 26th, same time and same place. Warden Bill Draize and Chairman Tony Horner need some help with the set-up and the clean-up. Please lend a hand for this FREE affair. On August 19th from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. the Squires will be washing cars in the Council parking lot. The suggested Donation is $5.00 but you can be much more generous. It does not happen until September, but that "Bloody Pest" Brother Red Smith would like you to sign-up for our Blood Drive in September. He will have a sign-up sheet at the picnic. Thanks to all of the Council Chairmen who showed up at Good Counsel High School on Tuesday, July 25th for the State Programs Meeting. This is the best opportunity for new and all Chairmen to get started and learn what each program requires. There are so many good ideas that chairmen get exposed to at these meetings. Please enjoy the remainder of the Summer and remember the Tootsie Roll Sales Campaign is just around the corner.
