Not only Catholics but also people of many religious persuasions support this sacred cause - the dignity of the human person born and unborn. This idea of people of different faith commitments coming together in a common cause is recent. For centuries, each country had its own religion. All others were under suspicion, which often lead to persecution by means of job discrimination, exclusion from civic life, confiscation of private property, expulsion, physical punishment and even death. England was one of those countries that carried out this kind of policy. It all began with Henry VIII ( ) who persecuted the Catholic Church after failing to obtain a divorce from his Spanish wife Catherine of Aragon and it continued with his son Edward VI ( ) and his Catholic sister Mary ( ). She turned against her Protestant subjects and over 300 hundred were put to death - both men and women. Thus, the (Continued on page 3) WOULD YOU TAKE CANDY FROM THESE STRANGER?..We hope so! October kicks off Tootsie Roll Month. Please donate 3 hours of your time to help the mentally disabled. To sign up, contact Recorder Ronald Morris at

4 4 PRESIDENT BUSH ADDRESSES 122ND SUPREME CONVENTION IN DALLAS THE PRESIDENT: Thanks for the warm welcome. Welcome to Texas. (Applause.) And thanks for inviting me so I can come home. (Laughter.) I really appreciate the Knights of Columbus. This strong organization believes in families and faith, and compassion for those in need. And I'm honored you'd invite me to the 122nd Convocation of this great organization. I appreciate Carl Anderson, and his leadership. I've gotten to know Carl because, you see, he's more than just an introducer of Presidents. (Laughter.) He's a person who works with Presidents -- at least this President. And I'm proud to have his help. (Applause.) It's good to see my family friend, Virgil Dechant. Virgil, it's good to see you, sir. Thank you for such a warm greeting in the photo op line and reminding me of some great days gone past. I'm proud to be here with Cardinal McCarrick. It's good to see you, sir. He's a neighbor in my temporary residence. (Laughter.) I appreciate Cardinal Egan. I appreciate Cardinal Rigali, of the great city of Philadelphia; Cardinal Francis George of Chicago; Cardinal Keeler of Baltimore, Maryland. I'm honored you all are here. Thank you for your presence. I'm honored to be in the presence of Cardinal Macharski, the Archbishop of Krakow, who succeeded the Holy Father in that role. Welcome to the United States. Appreciate you coming, sir. I appreciate Bishop Wilton Gregory's leadership, of the Conference of Catholic Bishops. I appreciate Your Eminences, and Your Excellencies, Reverends, Monsignors, Fathers and Deacons. Nuestros amigos de Mexico. I appreciate the officers and directors, state deputies, board of directors, delegates, ladies and gentlemen, Knights, and my fellow American. Thanks for having me. (Applause.) Two months ago, I had the privilege of visiting His Holy Father Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. It was my third meeting with His Holy Father since I took office, and for those of you who have ever met him, you know I'm telling you the truth when I tell you being in his presence is an awesome experience. He is a true presence. On the occasion, I had the special honor of presenting him with America's highest civil award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was my chance to express our nation's respect for a devoted servant of God and a true hero of our time. Pope John Paul II has been a unique and commanding voice for the cause of the poor, the weak, the hungry, and the outcast. He has challenged our nation, and the entire world, to embrace the culture of life. He's called upon us to uphold and affirm the dignity of every person, rich and poor, able and disabled, born and unborn. He's called us to love and serve our neighbors in need. Few organizations have worked harder and done more and met this challenge than the Knights of Columbus. (Applause.) I know you're proud of your organization, and you should be. The Knights were born in New Haven, Connecticut. Come to think of it, so was I. (Laughter and applause.) From your foundations in a small church basement, you have raised up one of the great America organizations dedicated to charity and mutual assistance and the fight for civil liberties. I'm proud to say that my family has contributed to your ranks. A few years ago, Governor Jeb -- (applause) -- became a Knight. (Applause.) And he -- yes -- and he recently took his Third Degree. (Applause.) I'll see him this weekend. His son is getting married. I'll pass on the word, aim for the Fourth. (Laughter and applause.) Jeb knows, as I do, that your works of mercy are making our society more compassionate, changing the lives of millions of citizens. Compassionate work changes our society one heart and one soul at a time. Last year, the Knights raised and donated a record $130 million to charity. That's a phenomenal record. (Applause.) You also volunteered for an unprecedented 61 million hours of community service. (Applause.) You obviously have heard the call. I was pleased to hear this story about the Knights in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the Mother Teresa Day Shelter. They're a daily presence there -- they're mopping the floors, collecting laundry soap, blankets, and food for 130 homeless men and women. They're not giving the orders, they're serving the people. Patricia Henry, the shelter director, put it this way: "If I need help, I just give the Knights a call." (Applause.) Such a powerful example. Americans across this great land know that they can do the same, that they can serve our country by helping someone in need. We're grateful for your service to the men and women in uniform and to our nation's veterans. You've sent hundreds of thousands of prayer books to those working to make our country more secure and to bring freedom in parts of the world that are desperate for freedom. You bring comfort and strength to our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. I want to thank you for taking time to visit our wounded and disabled veterans, for providing comfort to their families, to give them a word of thanks. 5 5 PRO-LIFE Charles X. Suraci ACTION ITEM The good news: On May 6, the Food and Drug Administration informed Barr Laboratories that they will not grant over-thecounter status for Plan B also known as morning-after pills and "emergency contraception." Plan B is a pill regimen that is known to abort little babies during their first seven days of life. The bad news: Although it's nice that the FDA shut the door, they didn't throw away the key. There is a possibility that the FDA, at a later time, will allow for Plan B to be over the counter. Not only is this a travesty for babies, but also for their mothers. The artificial hormones used in Plan B have been known to cause cancer, blood clots, strokes and a number of other health problems. Not only does the FDA need to slam the door shut for future over-the-counter status for this abortion drug regimen, they also need to remove it completely from the market. These drugs can kill little babies while seriously harming women. We urge you to contact the FDA and President Bush to stand up for the babies and for women. Do not let Plan B go over the counter! 6 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH This gentleman is familiar to all, think about who you see many times behind the bar and before you know it he will be in the kitchen preparing a lucious meal for the council or telling a couple jokes at a function. He is known for his congeniality and willingness to help in anyway to make an affair run smoothly. He is a member of the Retired Mens Club and has a kitchen crew that prepares a gourmet meal for the membership. Along with above duties he is also a council officer. His presence at a function give it a touch of class. What more can we say but to congratulate Ray Koski as Knight of the Month JMJ PRAY FOR US COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES Warden John Cuff Brother Knights!! Give a few hours of your own to support a cause right here in our own community. If you can help call Ron Morris at We had a very successful Blood Drive held Sept. 11. 7 GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK Patrick Bowles Daylight saving time officially ends on October 31 st this year and as the expression goes we fall back. Since we do fall back in October, I would suggest that we do not take the literal expression of that phrase and instead surge ahead with all of the great programs planned at Father Rosensteel council - let us spring forward now in our programs since some of our finest activities occur between now and spring. Speaking of programs we have some great ones lined-up this month. On October 8 th there will be the annual Candlelight Rosary and Benediction for the unborn at the monument erected by our council and the Maryknights. Please keep about 3 hours open on your calendars to assist with the Tootsie Roll program helping the mentally disabled in our community. For the golfers we are holding the 18 th annual fall golf classic at Marlborough Golf Club. The children s annual Halloween party is always a big hit for the kids, their parents, and relatives. There is also the Octoberfest featuring cocktails, dinner, and dancing that is certain to be festive and enjoyable. See the Knightlife for details about these events and others. Your attendance and participation is both welcome and needed. October is also the month we pay tribute to Christopher Columbus; the Catholic gentleman who in the early morning hours on October 12, 1492 discovered the new world, America. Four hundred years later in 1892 President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation to all Americans to celebrate the day. For years the Knights of Columbus urged lawmakers to proclaim Columbus Day a Federal Holiday, in 1971 it was made an official holiday. As we celebrate Columbus Day this year keep in your prayers our founder, Father McGivney, and all members and families of the Knights of Columbus. In closing I leave you with this inspiring quote: Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. Robert F. Kennedy FAMILY OF THE MONTH You see them in action with their siblings in many activities around the council. On familly night, in the kitchen serving, preparing or delivering orders to members and their guests. He is now a member of the Building Association and his interest in the council shows his volunteering to assist where help is needed inside and out. She can be seen in the Knights Room pinch hitting as an mixologist and occasionaly assisting at catered affairs. No matter what the occasion is and help is needed they are available and with a smile. The next time you see Tom and Debbie Kelly and their children Brian, Bobbie and Christy say thanks and congratulate them for being Family of the Month. 7 SURGE WITH SERVICE! WANTED: BLOOD PLATELETS There is always a dire need for Blood Platelets. Any interested donors, please contact Red Smith for further information (301) ) CHURCH ACTIVITIES Wally Horner Our Lady of the Rosary In October, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. We can all share fully in every blessing that comes from our devotion to the Blessed Mother by praying the rosary daily. I would like to see each Knight make a rosary novena for seven consecutive days, October 7 through October 15, for your special intentions. Especially, ask Mary to help put a stop to the terrorist attacks throughout the world. Memorial Mass Our annual Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, November 7. Let us all remember our deceased members by attending mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist. Tickets for the breakfast will be available form GK Pete Bonin. Financial Assistance to the Dominican Sisters of HopeOur committee has raised 1, to help provide care for 68 frail/elderly sisters that need daily medical assistance. Sister Joann wishes me to convey the following thanks to all the brother Knights of our Council. "All of our Sisters join me in thanksgiving because your goodness is overwhelming. We offer these words to express our gratitude and share with you just how important you are to us. We could not provide for each of our Sisters without the contributions we receive from your loving hearts." COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Chancellor Rob Seubert Hello my brothers! September started off very well for the Seubert Family. That is because my beautiful wife Carol gave birth to our little Sara Anne on the 1 st. We are not getting much sleep but the joy and excitement has been worth it. I have a little favor to ask you this month. Tootsie Roll Chairman, Brother Ron Morris and I are having a terrible time getting volunteers for the Fr. Rosensteel annual charity drive for the mentally handicapped. At the time this article went to press we still needed at least 70 brothers to help man the fronts of the area grocery stores to pass out tootsie rolls and collect donations. Now I have never been one to plead for help, but I have been known to get down on my knees and beg. We have one of the largest councils in the state and we are having trouble getting half as many volunteers as the smaller councils. This drive happens just once a year. It is our chance to give back to the areas mentally handicapped families and friends. Three hours is all we ask to help make someone else s life a little bit better. They need our support, we need to make ourselves available. With all that said, please call Brother Ron Morris at and ask him what slots he needs filled. He can also answer any questions you may have if you have never done it before. If you can't participate in this year's Tootsie Roll Drive, how about considering a contribution of $25 or whatever you can afford? "No person has ever been honored for what he received. Honor is our reward when we give." -- Calvin Coolidge, Goodbye and God Bless!

The month of October is going to be an active one for the Council. Don t forget to mark your calendar to attend OCTOBERFEST Friday October 29, There will be entertainment, dinner, dance and open bar. Can t beat that for $25.00 per person. Don t forget that Daylight Saving Time ends on the 24 th of October, Columbus Day is on October 12 th, and get ready for Halloween on Sunday October 31 st. Our luncheon will be on the 26 th of October and the cooking team will be Bill Draize and his better half, Arlene. I wonder if it will be some kind of witch s brew made by their team of Halloween goblins. We shall see. It should be interesting. Maybe our bartenders will think of some Vampire Cocktail Special to get us all in the Halloween mood. On a serious note, remember all our service men and women serving our country and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Travel Chairman Frank and Nancy Marchone have scheduled a meeting for everybody going on the cruise this fall. It will be on Wednesday, October 13 th at 2:00 at the council. A representative from Eyre Travel will be there to answer all your questions, so start writing them down now. She will also pass out your travel documents. Anyone who cannot attend this meeting should make other arrangements by calling Frank or Nancy at LAST CALL FOR INCEN- TIVE DRIVE TICKETS! If you need more, call PGK Floyd Jarboe MARYKNIGHTS NEWS OFFICERS President....Kathy Arvedlund V. President.....Gerry Mell Treasurer....Nancy Marchone Secretary......Marguerite Sukacz Historian......Helen Vallone Chaplain.....Rev. Gerard Trancone or At the September Mass of Remembrance for deceased Marykinght members, Father Trancone (with his own "golden tongue") compared our organization to the feast-day saint, John Chrysostom, whose name means "golden tongue". Some of the virtues attributed to St John were his enthusiasm, spunk, and zeal, which Father Gerry said could be applied to the Maryknights as well. Let's don't let Father and St John C. down, Maryknights. Let's look at the ways we can proceed this year with enthusiasm, spunk and zeal! Our first "enthusiastic" endeavor is the PotLuck Dinner at the October Meeting. We are asked to bring a dish, which can be an entree, an appetizer, or a salad (enough desserts have been signed up for). Please identify your dish (e.g. shrimp salad, chicken casserole, etc.) and place your name on dishes or utensils which should be returned to you. Also, please bring a serving utensil for your dish. If you haven't signed up for a dish and desire to do so, please call Kathy Arvedlund ( )We will have dinner at 7:00 PM followed by the meeting at which Father Trancone will talk about the Deaf Center, this year's Charity Ball recipient. The next project we tackle with "zeal" is the Charity Ball and Silent Auction on November 20. The festivities will start at 6:00pm with an open bar and dinner at 6:45pm followed by dancing to the music of "Yellow Brick Road". Raffle tickets (cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200) should be returned to Mabel Capacchione and reservations can be made to Nancy Marchone ( ).. Note that this event is open ALL, not just Maryknights. The price for all this fun is $25 per person, so come prepared to have a ball at the Charity Ball. "Spunky" Maryknights are involved in many other activities: Ways and Means Chairman Mary Pecoraro has bake sales at the Council's Family Dinner Night. Mary has an established team of workers, but could always use donations of cakes and cookies and an extra helping hand. Christ Child Society Chairmen Carmella Plunkett and Ellie Horner chair a program for donating baby blanket to the Society. Carmella will teach anyone interested to knit or crochet baby blankets. She will provide the wool. A new project for Maryknights, headed by Arlene Draize, is providing a dinner for University of Maryland students at the Catholic Student Center at UM. Father Bill Byrne had introduced this activity and various Catholic organizations throughout the area have pitched in to provide a meal each month. It is a worthy cause, and as our President Kathy Arvedlund said. "We feed their bodies, while Father Byrne feeds their souls". Anyone interested in helping can call Arlene ( ). At the September meeting, Program Chairman Luanne Flanigan announced some interesting programs for the coming year: October - Pot Luck Supper, November, a talk on genealogy, December, a Christmas program and in the new year, possibly a talk on women's health issues and women's safety issues. Kennedy Institute Chairman, Helen Vallone was appreciative of the number of donations of school supplies for the Institute, thanks to the generosity of Maryknights. Congratulations to Arlene Draize, winner of the evening's 50/50.A word of grateful thanks for the prayers, cards and phone calls during my recent illness.
